Three geniuses in one band. Neil was the main lyrist for the band while Geddy and Alex wrote the music. Neil was an avid reader. He passed from a form of brain cancer in 2020 They had retired before Neil got sick and Alex and Geddy are not touring. As Geddy once said there is no Rush without the three of us. One of the reasons they lasted so long together is that the three of them were the best of friends. You really got the meaning of the song. Not long after this concert, Neil's daughter died and soon after his wife died too. The band basically ended and wasn't resurrected until 2001. I highly recommend watching the doc, "Beyond the Lighted Stage" to really get to know the guys and their history. They are unique in the rock world.
Rush are the greatest 3 piece rock outfit in history. Legions of very loyal fans & a back catalogue of diverse rock and synth infused music spanning 40+ years. Each member are masters of their respective instruments with Geddy, classes as one of the very best bass guitarists ever but Neil, the drummer, arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time. Not many people would disagree with that statement. Great you call out Alex's unique input. He defines the Rush sound.
one of the huge silver linings of being branded a nerd is that you tend to have more appreciation of complex art: worth the cloud when you finally arrive at Rush and Tool. Alex has grown into one of THE great guitarists of our time. being in a band and keeping up with what has been considered the best rhythm section of all time takes some doing. his compositions with Geddy carried the band through over 40 years of musical evolution; mistakes i have ever heard him make can be counted on one hand; his variety of technique and sounds are exemplary; and often his style is utterly unique; some of his solos are up there with the greatest ever imho (camera eye, closer to the heart, xanadu - try all three from their legendary Exit...Stage Left show, in fact go and watch the full show, now!); AND he is also a funny fucker (english for 'amusing gentleman'). RIP Neil. long live Rush.
One of my fav songs... Was at this show. Closed out the tour of about 7 shows for us. 3rd row center in Pittsburgh. Hard to imagine what was to come a few months later. Neil wrote >90% the lyrics and has written quite a few books. One of my favorite authors. Clock Work Angels was the only concert I have went to where it helped to read the novel first.
one of my older brothers turned me onto RUSH when I was a kid. was fortunate to see them live countless times. i remember the first time i heard them play this live. musically and lyrically unmatched.
I saw Rush in concert 5 times. Natural Science is my favorite Rush to hear live. It was so intense. I saw Rush on this tour June 19th, 1997. Other song suggestion Live "Anthem" Live 1975. Alex once said Natural Science was one of his favorite songs to perform live. "Permanent Waves" is one of my favorite Rush albums. Every song on it is awesome, and Natural Science is a great closer!
You just got hooked on the best band ever, musically and lyrically. Their sound is unmatched by any band I have listened to. This humble trio are geniuses and the gift they left us is priceless. I'm 61 yo and have been loving this band for more than 40 years... I just can't stop enjoying their creations...
Neil wrote 99% of the lyrics since Fly By Night when he joined. He also wrote many books about his experiences in life. Worth reading them. As we say in Boston, he was wicked smaaht! As for his death, he died from brain cancer. They had just completed their 40th anniversary tour and Neil announced his retirement as he said he was unable to play at the level he wanted due to age and abuse on his body from years of drumming. He was one of the hardest hitters out there. So when he retired, that was the end of Rush. Was 5 years later or so when he died. His cancer, while likely not known during the R40 tour, was kept private except for close friends. One of the saddest days of Rush fans’ lives when we heard. Since then, Alex and geddy have performed together a few times but not really under the Rush. Mostly at tribute concerts to the foo fighters drummer who also passed away.
Really enjoyed the reaction and that you got the deeper meaning of the lyrics. These guys are amazing musicians to see and hear, especially live. You're getting that Neil is considered one of the best drummers ever but, Geddy is also considered one of the bass players ever. Big Al is one of the most stylistic and creative guitarists ever. I like to think of RUSH as a cake where Ged and Neil are the cake and Alex is the frosting and decoration that makes it's taste great be presentable. My first RUSH show was 1977 and last was 2015.
Great reaction! One of their best songs and a favorite for Alex! Last album toured (Clockwork Angels 2013). The R40 tour, for their 40th anniversary, was in 2015 and their last live tour! (most of us saw this coming, but they never announced it). Neil found out he was sick with a brain tumor in 2017 or 2018 (all a secret from everyone except family and close friends) and he announced his retirement. In 2018 Alex and Geddy confirmed, the band would be no more! Neil died in Jan of 2020 😭 But thank the Lord we have all this great footage of them doing what they did best for over 40 yrs… ROCK OUR SOCKS OFF!! They also got together twice last year with other artists for the Taylor Hawkins tributes! So, they could still do something together in the future, but I’m sure it won’t be under the RUSH name and they’ll never tour again… but we can hope!! LOL! Enjoy the journey! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!
I was there! It was an incredible concert. I didn't even know this Rush song so I was blown away when I saw it on you tube and it is utter perfection and went..."how did I miss this?"
Absolutely legendary performance of an epic song! 🔥 As others have pointed out, Neil (RIP) was the primary lyricist - filtered by Geddy (he had to sing it, so would offer suggested changes). Man, you doing Rush, The Warning & Nightwish is quickly making you one of my favourite reactors. Now just add some Supertramp & ELO and you’d really be cooking!
Alex lifeson in my opinion is by far an away the most underrated rock guitarist… His chord choices are exquisite, even when their not complex… all 3 of these guys are masters and never stopped learning their craft
The anthem Rush wrote for the unpopular nerd was a 1982 hit called Subdivisions. You should treat yourself to it next. Live or studio won’t matter. PS - I was at this concert. It’s my favourite venue too,
Rush officially retired in 2018 when Alex and Geddy found out about Neil's cancer. They have both stated repeatedly and emphatically in interviews that they would not try to replace him, since he was so integral to the band. You should check out some of Neil's drum solos to get a good idea of his versatility on the kit. "O Baterista" from their 2003 tour in Rio is a great one to try out.
There are so much similarities between Rush and The Warning, although there are about 40 years between them. Neil wrote the vast majority of Rushes lyrics, as Paulina does for The Warning (maybe a little less). And many Rush fans love mainly their early works as later on they started to experiment with other genres and that not everyone was up with. That you can also see with The Warning right now: They tried out a different style with "More" and some of their fans assume them to leave the "right path". But to sum it up, The Warning is on its way up to where Rush was in terms of writing-, composing- and technical skills.
I was there! Rush is such a fantastic band live, I've seen them 12 times since discovering Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure at just the right age in high school. Piling three of my friends into my Mom's '81 Volvo 240 and fighting our way into Toronto in sometimes the absolute worst weather to make the show no matter what. Huge parties on Carlton Street in front of MLG after the shows, the cheering and chanting people spilling down into the subway below. I snuck in my Yashica 35mm camera and a lens into the Hold Your Fire show and got a few usable shots of the show to share with my buddies; valuable stuff in a time with no cell phone cameras of any kind. I went to both Toronto nights of the R40 Tour, Rush's final tour, to watch these three masters go out on a magnificently high note. Both shows cover just about every Rush song I loved. On the last night in T.O., during the intermission, a couple of friends and I walked around the upper mezzanine where our seats were, during the Intermission. We found a curtained off entrance to closed off seats way up high, but right behind the stage. I pulled out a joint from my sock, sparked it up and passed it around. I said to my friends, 'There. Now you can say you smoked a fattie backstage at a Rush concert. Awesome times, fantastic band. Anything you choose to react to, you'll love.
Heard a funny interview. Geddy said he and Alex didn’t want to write the lyrics so when Neil joined they were like “he uses big words, I wonder if he would like to write the lyrics.” The rest is literally history.
As a female Rush fan since the summer of 1975, I would suggest a good list of songs from their 19 studio albums. You could begin with the opening track from each record, from the debut album in '74 through their swan song, 'Clockwork Angels,' released in 2012.
This is a song from their 7th album that they hadn't played on tour in almost 17 years. Conjure your inner artist and think about that. And then imagine playing this after 17 years and you still had almost another 20 years to go in your career. That's Rush. Over 40 years of magic.
My Dad took me to my first concert. Rush in Baltimore in ‘79 He hated it. I loved it. I took my son to his first concert. The tour this vid is from. We both loved it!
As you (understandably) liked Neil that much, try out his drum solo at Frankfurt (search for Neil Peart Drum Solo - Rush Live in Frankfurt). He really shows off.
LOVE the reaction!! :) ♥ Psalm 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
Lyrics are almost exclusively Neil. He always read a LOT of books, and they inspired most of his writings. It's also why they called him "The Professor. "

Most of the lyrics came from neil. Very smart guy. There is NO rush without neil. Geddy and alex may do something but they are like 70 now. But if they did it would not be as rush. None of these guys can be replaced.
Alex is never talked about, but try playing his stuff, it's not your usual, he's very creative, some of the best solo's in my opinion, he throws in everything!
This is, was a band for intelligent people who wanted more from rock music than chicks and cars, nothing wrong with that either, but it gets dull fast.
RUSH will never be again. I'm lucky enough to have been alive for the entirety of the bands existence. Simply unmatched in their musicianship and hands down the best live band ever!!
