HOW TO TURN YOUR BALL HEAD INTO A GIMBAL | tips for wildlife photography [photo friday]

- Опубліковано 29 бер 2018
- In this episode of Photographer's Friday I am telling about how I use my different tripod heads and how I actually often use my ball head as a gimbal head for both my Tamron 150-600mm and my Nikon 600mm f4.
-------
This is the Gimbal style head I am using in the video: geni.us/MH_033
And this is the Ball head: geni.us/MH_013
For me, the best tripod for wildlife photography is the one I am bringing with me all the time and the best tripod head is the one I can use for most of my photography.
Very often I leave the tripod at home, if it is too big and bulky, but I am actually trying to change that:)
for If you are doing wildlife or bird photography or other kind of nature photography where you are using big lenses, I think it is worth it to buy a good quality oversized ball head for your tripod, because it gives you the option to use it as a gimbal style head.

Why doesn't this man have 1,000,000 subscribers? Photographing red deer, musk oxen, mountain hares and mostly by himself too! Absolutely brilliant.
Lovely comment Vincent, so nice that you like my videos!
I like how polite you are, and how sincere. You're a genuine person.
Danish manners, I suppose
I agree with you :)
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my password. I love any tricks you can give me.
@Vincenzo Davian instablaster ;)
@Reece Andrew thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I love your down to earth, no-nonsense approach. Thank you for being such an interesting and helpful person. I have learned so much already from you. Thank you again.
Thanks for the excellent tip Morten! I have the same RRS ballhead and have never thought of using it in the is way. It will make it much easier than shooting my gimbal out of my truck with the 400mm 2.8! Keep up the good work!
That is just awesome to hear - I am so glad you take your time to actually tell me:) When I made the episode this morning, I had now idea if everyone knew this already:) Thanks again.
Although I'm not into wildlife photography, it was very interesting seeing you explaing this super helpful tip. It's wonderful how much love for what you're doing you are able to convey with these videos, Morten. Keep up the good work! I'm totally addicted to your YT channel
What an amazing compliment to get on this beautiful morning. You just made my day a bit better. Thanks so much 👍👍👍😁
I like this lighting style, and the little room is so good, also the tips are very good too.
Awesome, Morten. Good clear explanation and advice. Love it.
Just subscribed. What a great piece of advice! Started photographing birds last year and I will certainly be trying that tip out.
Excellent tip! Thanks Morten!
Such a great tip! I have still to check this as I haven't the sturdy video tripod and head ball as you have. But it gave me some ideas in the process. Thanks.
Great tips Morten this will save me packing the gimbal everywhere.
Simple and brilliant. Thanks for sharing! Love your office, too...
Photographer's Friday is a great format for short focused tips. Nice work, Morten! Looking forward to hearing about your next field trip!
So glad to hear Jon - so kind of you to write me some feedback😀
Great tip about the ball head. I use both a gimbal and a ball depending on what I am shooting' landscape or wildlife. Shooting the ball head for landscape is the time when the unexpected wildlife shows up and your tip could save the day with that perfect image! Thank you!
Once more a useful tip from you. Thank you:)..... have a very nice easter holiday! Thumb up for sharing:)
Thank you for this very helpful video, Morten. I will try what you have suggested. Cheers!
I think the demonstration was the best part about this video. I have been using some of your techniques but now I can improve on them. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot Glen - so great to hear👍
This is a great tip for those of us working our way up! Great video!
hver så snill å fortsett med vloggen! elsker vloggen, flott inspirasjon
Morten, I'm so happy to have found your channel. Its the most inspiring and interesting photography channel. The long form is excellent and a breath of fresh air in the fast paced world we live in.
Thank you. I have an arca Swiss ballhead and had a gimbal head in my shopping cart, but you convinced me I can get by with what I have. Saved me $200, and this trick really worked for me after finding the balance point on my 300mm 2.8 lens with TC. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this!
Very cool Morten... thank you for sharing... I'll be trying this!
Thanks Morten for the tip. I’ve been doing this lately on a monopod, and it works a treat! Also, just got to say that I love your videos. Your passion for photography is infectious. I’d stopped taking photos for the last year or so after a wrist injury, but now I have the bug again and I can think of nothing else. I’m back out now thanks to your tip and the monopod 👍👍👍
Love your videos, awesome tips and stuff! Keep it up
Genius! Great tip, thanks very much. I’ll be trying this out this weekend.
I am so glad that i found your videos Martin - you are such an inspiring Person.
Love the idea of using the ballhead as a Gimball. Thanks for that.
Thank you for the tip Morten. My favourite photography channel on youtube by far!
That is awesome to hear:)
Thank you very much for this video, I have a side notch in my tripod and hadn't realised I could use it in this way.
Love your video's. Great tip! Thanks, I will try this one. Happy Easter.
Great Tip, Morten Hilmer. Thank you for sharing it. Hugs from Brazil.
Thanks so much for this trick! Works great for the little time that I spend with wildlife photography - therefore saving me a bunch of money! Keep up the great videos - I appreciate your work and am happy I found your channel :)
Brilliant! I can’t wait to try it out.
Very interesting video. Thank you so much. I look forward to learning from you through these videos.
Thank you Morten Hilmer. Real down to earth how-to - very refreshing!
Hi from Oz, I've only just discovered this video but what a great tip.
I do wish I had seen this video 3 days ago as I could have saved my money because I have just made a purchase of a gymbal.
Thanks for sharing your great idea.
Thank you great tips see you next week!
Thank you, Morten, for very interesting and helpful tips! This is my favourite channel on UA-cam :-)
Hi, that's a huge compliment, thank you so much! Let me know if you have any tips or suggestions at any point. Have a lovely weekend.
This is fantastic, thanks very much mate
Very interesting video. Greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your works and tips that you share.
Thanks Morten, for those great tips!
oooohhhhhh is really amazing , very very good Morten.
This one was really helpful. Thank you. Looking forward to the next Friday..
It completely changed my filming, and it is just so simple.
I saw another photography guy take his ball head and lean the lens not into the groove where the lens goes completely down but he put it on the edge and that gave him the ability to do a lot of movement like the gimbal. In other words don't go into where the groove is but just lean it to the side and then you can go left and right and up and down and it works perfectly can't wait to try it tomorrow I think it was a brilliant idea.
Great tip! Thanks!!
New intro is dope !!
I love it so much 😘😘😘
A very smart idea. Thank you for sharing.
Well done:, clear concise and lively.
Excellent video I now can use my existing ball-head in a new way. I love how you present your content in a really relaxed way, made me feel like you were an old friend just showing me how you do it properly.
Great information here / the ball head especially helpful as that is what I use. Thanks buddy!!
Great tip Morten! Thank you!
I recently got my first monopod. (I have a tripod that I don't use, because I don't tend to stay in one place.) I was debating whether I should just wait on getting the monopod until I could also afford to get the Wimberly Sidekick that you mentioned. After watching this video, I set up the ball head on my monopod as you showed and was very, very happy with how it worked! I'll probably still get the Sidekick, but at least now I can enjoy my monopod more thank to your excellent idea! I think this is the first video of yours I've watched, and it earned an instant subscription!
A great little tip! I don't normally use a tripod with my 150-600 but I will definitely consider a ball head now as it is way more versatile than I realised!
Great video with very helpful tips! thank you, Morten!
You are so welcome Jörg
Great tip Morten, I've just bought the Sigma 150-600 and was wondering about needing a Gimbal for it - but I can do as you suggested so thanks again.
Awesome. So glad you can use the technique
What a great tip! thanks!
Very useful ideas thanks 👍
Really enjoy your videos, here in Montana within a hour of Yellowstone park the photo opurtunitys
Are endless.
Just had to come back here and say how this video completely changed my mind on ballheads :D you are just great, Morten!
Very useful video. With my BH-55, I was unable to make use of it in a better way. But this video helped me to use it better. Thank you Morten.
Wow such a simple but effective technique. Great tip.
Super useful, thanks for the tip.
Another great tip Morten its amazing how it still worked with the big Lens , I`m going to give it a go with my tamron 150-600. looking forward to the next video already
So nice to hear Michael - thanks a lot for writing
Simple and elegant way too eumlate a gimbal! Thanks for this explanation. Will try this out very soon.
I used a full Wimberley gimbal with my 600mm lens. But, when I sold the 600mm I also sold the gimbal. I am, and have been for many years, a big fan of RRS ball heads. I use them with all my cameras and lenses up to and including my 200-600mm lens. Good tips.
Very informative and explained simply. Thanks
Brilliant! Looking forward to testing this out tomorrow on some sandhill cranes that are migrating through southern Colorado.
How did you get on with photographing the cranes?
Thank you very much Morten! Great tip. I was considering getting a gimbal, but I need a new ball head too. Keep the tips coming. I'm loving your Friday tips!
Great, I'm glad to have helped out!
wow what a great tip!! thank you so much :)
Great video again. Have a great Easter Morten.
I really love watching you videos. You put so much joy and passion into your photography. I hope I will one day get to enjoy photography like you do. Keep doing what you do.
What an awesome comment to get. Thanks a lot
Great tip! In a pinch, this works very well on my BH-55 (as you have). You really need one of the larger ball heads for this to work well. When I know I will need a gimbal setup ahead of time, I still prefer just putting my Wimberley Sidekick in the bag, since it is so small, works great and keeps the camera up higher. I almost never travel any real distance with my dedicated gimbal, as it is just too large to carry.
Thanks for explaining the pro's and cons of both types of tripod heads. I now know what I'm going to do with either type of tripod head. 👍
Ahh thank you so much for the amazing tip. I was going to buy a gimbal but I am not going to now and I am just going to use my ball head so thank you so much. I can't wait to see how it works tomorrow when I test it. I hope you have an amazing Easter
Really nice - let me know how it worked out?
Once again a great video and tip
For some time now, I've been carefully considering whether to get a full gimbal head or a side mount gimbal head. I think a side mount gimbal head like the sidekick would probably suit my medium long lenses best but now, thanks to you, I also have a third option to consider.
A good tip to utilizing a ball head in alternative methods. I discovered this back in the day for shooting Lunar captures with 500-1000mm lenses. Using a ball head becomes inherently unstable.
I couldn't afford a gimbal back then as they were all quite expensive. Having a large and simply ball head in my inventory, I made its operation smoother by adding some extreme pressure bearing grease to the contact areas and movement improved a lot.
Note, a warning to anyone planning to use this tip..... if you are using a quick release plate with a center attachment screw, it will loosen from the torquing applied when swinging the lens up and down! Not an issue for tripod collars with Arca-Swiss dovetails, but can be disastrous with standard QR plates. Be sure to use ones with securing set screws, or plates with more than one attachment point.
Thank you so much for sharing your very valuable feedback with us - I really appreciate and I am sure, I am not the only one. It is just so nice to hear how you guys are working and what technics you are using to get the most out of the gear. Thanks again.
Lovely video Morten, very useful tip!
Clever! Thank you!
Great comparison and great Tip with the ball head. Ich like the photographer s friday. Great idea and great work. Thanks.
This is brilliant. I've been trying to figure out what to do about my camera when it droops on my tripod for so long now. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the video. I loved it. I will try this technique with the ball-head.
thanks for the tip :) never thought of using the ball head as a gimbal
wow what a great tip that was i been looking at gimbals all day on amazon but just out of my price range for a good one but i have a good ball head which i will now incorporate this technique of yours, thank you Morten.
Very good trick! Thanks Morten.
Great video. Got to get out and try what you suggested.
GREAT idea. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent tip and demo Morten, thanks again! :-)
Thank you Morton for a very informative video. I recently bought a Tamron 150-600 and have been researching ball heads and gimbals. I think I'll buy a better ball head! Now to decide which one.
Nice tips and comments. Keep posting!
Thank you for the tip! I have a leveling base from my Pano kit. I'll use it with my tripod now.
This is a great idea! I never thought of using the ball head like this.
Thank you so much for this idea. I have been in each situation you mention.
Thank you. Great idea for telephoto lens.
Thanks for the tip I have the same gear as you do.Both for at least 10 years. Never occurred to me how to use the RRS Ball head as a gimbal. Just goes to show that one can always learn something new Thank you so much
Your videos are excellent Morten. Thanks.
As someone who has disparate styles of shooting, utilizing a ball head as an easy gimbal is awesome! It'll save me some money as I can focus on an excellent tripod to with an excellent ball head!!
evreything comes from the dedication you are putting in your job, hatts off
I use a Manfrotto 422 ball head, and, although I like their tripods and pan and tilt heads their ball heads aren’t anything to shout about. I find mine goes over 90° when I tilt it to the side. I like my old Benro side kicker I find it easier to use with my disabilities. Another great video with some great advice.
Hi Mark - you are absolutely right. I have the same experiences with some of these heads. Thanks so much for writing.
