I the beginning of the conflict, journalists had to wear blue helmets and gear, to show that they were press. After the taliban started picking out on journalists with gunfire, policies have changed and now embedded journalists also wear full camo like the military they're embedded with.
The more dangerous situation that Ross puts himself in the more of a hard man he becomes

The idea is that it remains at a stand-off distance where it's heavier weaponry can be used, outside of the range of the typical small arms normal infantry wield. There's nothing wrong with design when used as it was intended.
