Remember the Argentina 2006 World Cup team, including one Lionel Messi and Riquelme in the middle. One of the most talented international teams ever. They were by far the best team there but lost on penalties to Germany. Argentina never recovered, and it took then 15 years to get it together.
Messi didn't play that match though. Argentina put in Cambiasso if I recall correctly, someone for defense to keep the one goal lead trying to play it safe only to lose it instead.
They were number 1 favourite to claim the trophy that year as I recall correctly. Unlike England, Spain and Portugal, the teams as Italy, Germany, France, Holland, Arg and Brazil have always been favourite seeds to win trophies since far past anyway.
