Along the "challenges in this role" question, I recently asked my interviewers for a project manager type position "What are the major bottlenecks in this role?" The two interviewers went back and forth for 5-7 minutes during their response. If you can make the interviewer(s) talk most of the time, it means you have less chance to say the wrong thing

      I have some questions:
      1. I’ve been rejected from about 50 interviews. (In the last one they found the excuse that I could have given more examples. There must have been 20 to 30 perfectly given interviews with no feedback at all. The feedback I got from a lot of them is that they went for another candidate).
      2. Before the pandemic it only took around 4 interviews to secure a new role
      3. I went to a top business school and have half a decade of experience working for blue chip companies
      4. *I’ve been given the advice by some corporate operatives that I could still somehow secure a role at a top company even if I’ve been unemployed for half a dozen years*
*Is it discrimination? Is it bias because there is money involved? I would just like to know what is going on as I’m being forced to retire early abroad/take a career break in the summer*.

I made notes, I prepared questions and my interviewer was such a sweet gal but a chatterbox, all my prepared questions were answered in my 45 minute interview. Really the three people interviewing me seriously wanted my personality to fit the room. My experience got me in the door, but who I am, got me the job. I’m so excited to start this new path. 🥰

    Questions I always ask:
    1) what will my 1st day, 1st week, or 1st 30 days look like?
    2) what's the most challenging part of this career?
    3) From your perspective, how would you define the perfect employee for this role?
    4) Why was this position open? (In other words, what happened to the person that filled this role b4?)
    4) In the job description, it says "....". Could you clarify that for me?
    5) What type of environment would you describe (company....(if it's not on the website), specifically, the department I would be working in if hired?
    6) Is there training for this position, if so, how long? -- (that might be answered already as it's connected to the 1st question.)
    7) Would I be working independently for the most part or are most projects to be worked on by a team?
    Etc, etc, etc, etc, etc

Hi Madeline, I've been preparing to find my career in a place I feel that I could grow. I have had dead end jobs and am a college graduate. I've been watching your videos for about a week now, last week I had 2 online interviews which I totally bombed. Today, I had a face to face interview. I took your advice, did not fidget, sat with my hands folded, looked him right in the eye, smiled. I was not asked anything about myself, but when he asked "DO you have questions?" I opened my book, said as a matter of fact yes. I asked him about the role in his view and perspective, I asked him what he expects from me the first 90 days, and I asked him about himself. He seemed to really enjoy that one and talked for about 10 minutes. He offered me my dream job as an aspiring baker, I get to work in my local grocery store as a bakery clerk and work my way up to decorator. Thank you so much for your helpful tips, they really helped me not feel so nervous and very confident. You're amazing!!! Thank you so much! :)

Hi Madeline! I’ve been at my new job for over a month now and never thanked you for all the helpful videos you created! So, thank you! My first interview with Defense Logistics Agency did not result with a job offer (they use behavior based interviewing-the STAR Method). After watching several of your videos, I realized what I could have done better. I continued to apply for new jobs with this same agency and eventually landed two more interviews. Believe it or not, I was offered both jobs! One of my new coworkers also watched your videos! I’m now sharing your videos with my son who has an interview this week with a federal agency. I’ll keep you posted!!

I have asked the personal question to my interview.
After I have asked the company culture and got the main interviewer talking and mentioned the second interviewer's progres, how he got promoted.
    I asked the following question.
As you have mentioned about Antony and how he got to the supervisor role, I have done some research and I have noticed your progress since 2006 up until now and how successful is your team, what advise would you give to a new team member if he/she can achieve such a success in their role?
I got him talking for over 10 minute's and I can tell he was really proud of himself talking and giving advice.
The result is today, and I believe I have nailed it.

I really found this video helpful! I had an interview last week for a job that I have dreamed about getting for years. I was a little nervous and wanted to feel prepared, so I watched some Madeline Mann videos right before my interview to get some good ideas of what to say and what to ask. Before they started interviewing me, I busted out the question, "what is it that makes this role available right now," showing that I am a discerning person who not only thinks about the "what", but also the "how and why." At the end of the interview, I used some of the tips in this video, asking about the "team dynamics, what they expect the role to accomplish within the first 90 days, and how they measure success for this specific role". What I loved was how I could see their wheels turning. I could tell that no one else they'd interviewed had asked them those specific questions, and they had to take a second to think on the spot, which turned the tables. I'm really glad I took the time to watch this video and I appreciate the great tips!

In advance I prepare two, usually about the future of the company, about long term career opportunities or additional responsibilities, and if I get the feeling that I’m acing it, my last question is “lastly, when do I start?” It always gets a bit of giggles and gives the impression you’re proactive and confident, but not desperate.

Role bottleneck or bottleneck of the role, is you basically asking the interviewer about what challenges or holdups this role brings or could possibly be subject to.
Bottleneck are things that slow down the process of something.
As an employer answering this question there are certain things helps identify bottlenecks of a certain role:-
1/ is by always observing the workflow of the role and pinpoint any delays areas.
2/ analysis data and consistently monitoring and reviewing the performance metrics like errors, completion time, rates and so on.
3/ feedback, always asking for feedback from individuals who are experiencing the role and individuals who are mostly interacting with the role.
And lastly mapping processes by identifying potential areas of congestion and delays.
    Good luck to everyone

I’ve definitely learned to ask them to describe the role in their own words even in a 2nd or 3rd interview. For one job I applied for the 1st interview was with HR and they described a role that I would be a perfect fit for. However in the 2nd interview I was interviewed by the manager of all those in the position. Come to find out HR didn’t know what employees in the role they were hiring actually did and unfortunately I wasn’t able to physically do the role they were needing.

I usually have a minimum of 3 questions that are my building blocks to ask the interviewer but every interview is not a one size fits all. I judge based on my own level of interest - off the cuff questions from feelers has always been my go-to if I’m interested and invested in the company.
