Who knew -- after dismally failing to understand previous videos - that you speak pretty well perfect English! Doubly impressed - by your music and your English! Looking forward to more.
It makes me happy to know that you stuck around even without english accessibility! 💕 From now on I will be regularly posting videos with english audio + subtitles in other languages :) Hope you enjoy it
Hello, as a lutenist myself I often see UA-cam videos with very incomplete, fuzzy or even false informations concerning the instrument... I must testimony here that your explanation is very good, very clear, always exact, and nice to listen to ! Thank you for that 👃and for all the folks you may invite to discover and appreciate this beauty. As you mentioned, the lute was played over nearly 2 centuries, with a lot of evolution - the result is a bit of a nightmare for lutenists : if we want to cover more or less the whole repertory, we must have a 7 courses small renaissance lute (Dowland), may be a 10 courses renaissance (Ballard), an Archiluth (late renaissance and all baroque), and a theorbo (idem), plus a baroque lute (for Weiss, Bach)... some of them being able to reach 2,10 meters long !!! BUT this is not finished, we're facing one other big issue : some groups play in 440 Hz (modern diapason) other play in 415 Hz - implying to change all you set of strings (up to 23 strings) and wait 2 days to stabilize the tuning !!! OR... to double your collection of instrument... CHANGE YOU CAR AND ASK PERMISSION TO YOUR WIFE (OR THE OPPOSITE 🤣)
Great review. I only recently managed to get my own lute, since they're always expensive no matter who you buy them from. I also went to Istanbul and saw an instrument shop by chance in the grand bazar. I wasn't planning on getting an oud as well since I was already broke from the lute but it was surprisingly affordable. Now I'm learning two completely different playstyles and a whole new music theory on the oud side. For any newcomers I'd just advice to try to study renaissance lute first if you want. I was always into baroque music so that's the one I got, but the difference in technique can be very frustrating to a brand newcomer, even if you've played guitar before it is completely different. Literally the only skill that's inheritable from guitar is on your left hand and not completely. The right hand technique is 100% different to plucking a guitar. And the baroque lute has way more strings so I guess it's better to get a steady hand on the renaissance one before moving on to baroque lutes.
I totally agree with beginning with the Renaissance lute. It’s much more forgiving technically, and we can play a lot of repertoire from the Baroque with some simple arranging.
Dear Rita. In a few weeks time I'll start my first lessons in the renaissance lute. The school in Brussels. Apart from the extra strings, is there a big difference between the renaissance and baroque lute? Thank you also for the great content.
That's awesome! I hope you have a great experience with your lute lessons in Brussels :) Well, the tuning varies a lot between lutes. The archlute I show in the video (played mostly in italian baroque) is basically a renaissance lute with extra strings. But the theorbo has a weird reentrant tuning, and the baroque lute played in France and Germany is tuned in an open D minor chord. Also, the technique varies a bit between renaissance and baroque instruments. I just posted a new video with some more juicy stuff about the lute, if you're interested!
