- RV LIFE and there is going to be mistakes. This Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake cost us 4 new tires. If you flat tow your Jeep watch the video and do the research.
Our Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake, we have been flat towing a vehicle behind our RV since we started our RV LIFE almost 2 years ago. The Jeep Wrangler is a new to us Jeep. We researched how to flat tow a Jeep Wrangler but it didn’t work for us and we destroyed all our tires.
After called around and watching some UA-cam videos we decided to get our tires at Discount Tire. They were great and even though we didn’t have an appointment they got us in replaced the tires and got us back on the road.
RV LIFE is great and next time we will do more research so we don’t have a Jeep Wrangler flat tow mistake again.

You literally just saved us from ruining my Jeep today. Everything we read said neutral/park/keys out. Even though all the Jeep club members said neutral/neutral/ keys in, we chose UA-cam over their knowledge. Even watched the same videos y’all did. Got the hitch installed today and only made it a mile away when we knew something was horribly wrong. The tires were literally like hot lava cuz we didn’t have the sensors installed yet and the RV was pulling like crazy. After finding your video, we did exactly what you ( and the club members) suggested and no problem what’s so ever after that. RV towed smoothly, the wheels were a good temp and the Jeep stayed in the lines. Thank you for posting this.
We are so happy to hear that our video helped you to not ruin your tires. This is why we do what we do. Thank you for taking the time to give us this feedback.
Read the manual and go step by step.
Owners manual for the win
For sure
All front wheels have "caster" similar to grocery shopping carts that allow them to turn left and right as needed to harmlessly follow the tow vehicle, but if (and only if) the steering wheel is able to rotate which is why a steering wheel lock must be disengaged with the key if equipped with that anti-theft feature which not all vehicle have.
Towing with the steering wheel locked will NOT prevent the front wheels from rotating normally, but will quickly wear off the tread all the way around the front tires as shown due to being dragged sideways during curves and corners which doesn't happen when "caster" is allowed to do it's job.
Thank you for providing the clarity on this. My hope is people can learn from our mistakes.
@@ExploringThroughOurLens You're welcome. I'll add that without "caster" (and with the steering wheel not locked) the front wheels would quickly turn all the way left or right and get dragged in that position, because "caster" is what causes the wheels to stay pointed toward the tow vehicle.
Thank you, thank you for that information!!!!!
You are so welcome!
I just bought a 2000 Wrangler TJ Sahara. The seller said it had brand new tires and it did, but the spare looked like it had skidded down the road, so I asked, he said," I forgot to turn the key onto ignition."
Yes it happens. Just double check when towing your jeep.
Transfer case in neutral...steering wheel able to free wheel (not locked)...toad brake in place and tested (Blue Ox, or other brand)... runaway tether in place...umbilical in place(for brake lights and turn signals AND wired properly to pass 12 volts to toad to keep toad battery charged)..check for lights operation (EVERY TIME )... . All this is in the Blue Ox manual. A basic understanding of what you are doing, and what is going on is required. Let's be safe out there, but we're only as safe as the weakest link...don't be that link.
Thank you for watching and for the advise. Safety first and foremost
Depends on what year the Jeep is. My 2014 and 2016 steering wheels do not lock if the key is out.
Yes they are all different. Thank you for sharing that information.
but you did your research as you advice us.... and you got the "false" info. I guess it needs more than an online search. Thank God for you folks and this video.
Thank you for watching. Glad we can help.
I just bought an OBD1 code reader and it said not for GVW over 8,000 lbs, and I was probably fine, but double checked….If you assume you know what happens….
That’s good to know and thank you for sharing the information.
You are absolutely correct! I researched and almost ruined my transmission! Finally went to a Jeep dealer to get the right info. Jeep models do not follow the same procedures for each year they were made to put them in flat tow mode. They are all different.
Yes and we hope more people see this video and don’t make the mistake we did.
Steering lock on Jeep JK was phased out in 2009.
That’s good. Thank you for letting us know.
Did you read the owners manual?
Yep my husband did
You have rare jeep because I did the same thing with my 1998 Wrangler (TJ). But I now have 2013 (JK) I don’t have a steering wheel lock. I can take out the key and have thousands of miles. No problem. You 2007 (JK) must be different since it is first year for JK
Yes that’s what we learned the hard way… it is different. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Or simply read the owners manual… 🤔
Yep I don’t think it was there.
Jeep eliminated the steering wheel lock during the 2008 model year
Good to know.
my 2012 Wrangler Sport does not lock the steering wheel
Thank you for sharing and for watching.
Well, that's why I'm on your form I'm researching, and I learned nothing I still DO not know why your wheels locked up if the steering wheel locked up that will not keep your wheels from turning Just the steering However on turns your wheels will slide sideways while turning So once again, I'm lost to how you lost threads all away round
Yes steering locked up not allowing the wheels to turn and tires just dragged
Thx for sharing guys! Great tip
You’re welcome. Hope it saves someone else from destroying 4 tires.
Great video, tells us nothing about what you do differently from the " false" videos ???
Thank you for watching…Bottom line check with a jeep dealer for your model and year.
I have a 1990 jeep YJ. It came with a solid tow bar. I need to tow it about 40 miles away. I figured, I put it in neutral, turn the key one notch as to not lock the steering wheel, and engage the cut off switch. Am I missing anything? Thanks.
While you may have the right idea I wouldn’t take a chance and I don’t know how each model is set up. You might want to check with a new dealer.
Jeep owner should do a research on "why dummy buy Jeep".
Yep
I have a 2011 wrangle manual and the wheel does not lock when the key is removed
I’m glad you are sure on that.
Every Jeep has a different procedure
My 2004 Liberty was different than my 2022 Wrangler.
The 2022 Wrangler is different than a 2010 Wrangler.
The procedure is alway in the Jeep's manual of the exact Jeep model you have.
Thank you for sharing that valuable information with us and our community.
Always keep your backup camera on.
Good advise
But it was on the Internet? I thought that meant it was true? I am going to make sure I use a reliable source like the RV Trip wizard forum. Thanks for sharing your experience.
That’s what we thought 🤨 Four new tires later and we learned a valuable lesson.
Its very easy to remove the steering wheel lock. Any towed should have it removed.
@@kevinmcdermott8033 that sounds like a good suggestion.
@@kevinmcdermott8033 thanks for the information we will look into that.
so where do you show us how to do it?
There isn't one way for all jeeps. That's why we suggest you check out how to set your specific jeep.
uhmm if you ever question if your ignition locks just jack up the front wheels (makes it alot easier to turn with no weight) and try to turn the wheel with no keys heck jack up each side and just grab a tire and try to turn if you can turn it then its not locked it it suddenly goes NOPE and stops it means its locked.. its actually quicker then searching up endless idiots who have heavily modified jeeps that dont have factory steering wheels as most offroaders REMOVE the wheel lock gear from the column and forget they even did that... as a mechanic ive facedesked so many times at how much WRONG info you get off alot of people "do not get me wrong there are alot out there that give the correct info" but its sifting though a haystack sometimes.. ex mechanic here that used to tow crs on the side many years ago... had to always double and triple check to see if 1 its front wheel drive rear wheel drive or in some cases all time all wheel drive and if its rear wheel we had to make sure the front tires are locked if not we have to put the car on wheel dollies..1 wrong mistake can cost us many nights of pay if our insurance didnt cover it.
You are so right that double triple checking is so important. Thank you for sharing that information.
Thanks for sharing before I go and ruin my almost brand new, $1,500 Jeep tires! But I'm going to go and research, research, and research some more before I take your advice!! 😉
Yes you should. Glad we saved you $1500. If I had 50% every time I heard that 😝
I just bought a 2007 Wrangler (manual) and will be using it to flat tow next season. I saw that I should disconnect the battery. Is that what you are talking about with the cut-off?
Yes, there is a discount switch. We are not at the RV until next week but can send info on that switch.
You’d better think instead of research…😢
Yep
To this point, a little bit of practical experimentation would have went a long way. E.g., asking the question, "does the wheel on my vehicle lock up if I remove the key..?" this is not a hard experiment and takes about ten seconds to do. But I think the lesson here is when using the Internet to support your research efforts, practical experimentation helps prove or disprove the assumptions. Boo on the tires. Thanks for the video.
@@delta34golf yes the right questions and the right experiment.
2008 jeep wrangler jk sport. no key lock. i think each person should check their own application instead of taking advise solely from a youtube channel, including this one
That's exactly what we said in this video. This is our experience and each type jeep is different.
Waste of a video. Show how to set up Jeep to flat tow in neutral.
Just trying to show our mistake and hope it helps others.
I clicked on this video expecting something dumb like 'we didn't think to rotate our tires' or something like that, but you actually confirmed my suspicions. I just finished watching the exact video you showed first where the guy says the jeep doesn't have a steering lock and I stopped for a second and went... uhh it absolutely does, what are you talking about? 😂
And that 3rd research cycle really pays off! 😂 it can depend year to year, its not as simple as JK - yes, JL - no or whatever. Just give your wheel a turn with the key out to get your answer. 🤷♂️
Yes you’re right. Every time we hook the car up we double check it is set up right.
Thank you for your information
Pretty sure the manual tell you how to flat tow.
Yes I’m sure it would. 🤓
This is also true, I looked through my manual and indeed it does provide instructions on how to flat tow.
@@ExploringThroughOurLens oh well, you live and you learn! Now others can see this video and learn
@@delta34golf we did look but didn’t see it.
I heard research throughout your video... But gave no solution to your problem. So I've wasted my research time, listening to you say research. I'm not knocking the idea, just wish you would have explained what you found in your research. Thanks
Yes, I wish it was simple and we could’ve explained for anybody and everybody what exactly to do. But as we found the different years and different types of jeeps have different solutions.
They literally explained crystal clearly why it happened and how to prevent it lmao
@@Squirrelinatux 😉
Jeep = mistake
We love our jeep. 🤓
@@ExploringThroughOurLens oh 100%, I love my Jeep too. Thanks for sharing!!
