I was always leery about working on small engines, but videos like yours make it very interesting and enticing to try myself. People like you help to take out the mystery of repair. Super video, thanks.
Valve Spring Tip. Compress it in a vice and use 2 small zip ties to keep it compressed. After installing the valve retainer cut and remove the zip ties.
Cut part of the lawn with my Grand Pappy's lawn mower while it progressively smoked till it quit running. Reckon I have same problem with valves and maybe head gasket. Now need the courage to grind less than a short hair the offending valve stems. Thanks chief for the tutorial this my save me some😃
gr8 vid, I have a quantum Flat head, I think with similar issues. it doesn't smoke but when it gets hot it seems to loose compression until it cools off. I have taken off the head to check the valves and cylinder wall, maybe need a valve job. Cylinder wall looks fine and smooth
Hi Jim. I think I have a valve problem too. Burning oil so white smoke. I am in the process of disassembling to check following your video. Will let you know how it goes. Thank you for this great video!!!
Valve problems like this will not cause burning oil...valve guides that are worn will cause oil burning...valve that is loose will simply cause loss of compression and will not burn oil....
I loved the video, but did have a lol when you said put a new spark plug in, that plug wasn't new . But loved the video, please make more on lawnmowers regards colin from croydon surrey England 👍 👏 👏 👏 👏
Glad to hear you got a smile out of this, I should have taken the spark plug out before cleaning the head. I have 50+ videos on small engine repair and maintenance, and am glad you enjoyed this one. Link to small engine play list: ua-cam.com/play/PLefyQ4qANfvcEnabhSmPezKVnSPmejn_8.html
I had the same problem. the Valve came off the spring . Put it back together but now the mower smokes ? Also the Head gasket is gone . Do you think it would be the reason its smoking white smoke ? Thanks for your Video !
A much more acceptable and professional job would involve determining and setting the valve lash (clearance) to specifications; however, this method will probably be adequate (and certainly was "quick and dirty.")
@@bbbjim1fixedit I found a troy bilt two Streets down from me.. all parts were there. It was the starter rope assembly..it had come undone. Running good ( self propelled)
Your muffler may have a lot of oil in it or your piston rings maybe worn. If it is your muffler over time it will get better; also you may want to ensure your oil level is cat the correct level
His repair was well done and increased compression....but his repair had absolutley nothing to do with the mower smoking....most likely when he changed the oil it either had the wrong oil type in (lower viscosity) or too much oil....loose valves do not in any way cause oil burning...
I can't believe this guy worked on an engine like that without blowing all the dirt and cobwebs off of it first. Filthy fucking motor is just asking to get dirt inside it while you're working on it. WTF is wrong with people?!

Thank you very much for this detailed video! your follower from now on! Thank you very much Compadre !!!
Welcome!
Looks to me like either the cranks bent or the blade with how bad it vibrating.

white smoke is a condition of burning oil. I wish you the best on your repair
@@bbbjim1fixedit Thanks !
Well done, Jim.
glad you liked the video
It look like the mower needed a lot of other things serviced , was other servicing done on this mower it was not talked about in the video .
This was a curb find brought back to good working order. I did clean in up and changed the oil
If you bake the head gasket in the oven from cold to max temp, it makes it close to new - it's like annealing.
True.
It works.
Good to know, I will give that a try
How's that mower doing today? Still have it?
It was a curb find and I used it a few times then I gave it away to someone needing a mower.
@@bbbjim1fixedit oh that's nice of you!😊

This engine was a curb find, it was no loss if too far out of spec. Glad to hear you liked the video
fantastic video, very informative,

excellent video thank you

Green ones are good
the best part is, this was a curb find

@@bbbjim1fixedit we need to keep these gas mowers cuz everything is going battery operated. You can carry a gas can where ever you go .
Smart idea

ok....did exactly what you did and white smoke is still a flying. ;(

You Need A Valvespring Compresser
That would be helpful
Flathead engines were more reliable, that’s why they don’t make them anymore.
agreed they are more reliable, I see some 30 year old engines still running today.
@@bbbjim1fixedit and a lot of them still running haven’t been properly maintained but yet they keep going
