Thanks Howie...I am really pleased the way he is coming on. I am planning to do a “hunting” video next, he is a bright little dog with plenty of natural ability. I just hope I can do him justice! Cheers Nick
Hi Nick, love the videos they've been a real help as I have an 8 month old cocker dog and have encountered a lot of the same challenges you have with Percy so it's been useful to see how you've combatted them. I've had the same issue with my dog throwing his head around when trying to get the retrieve off him, and when I do get hold of the ball or dummy he is reluctant to let go.. I've tried comforting him and not rushing to take it from him but nothing seems to make him want to give it up! He did have the same issue as Percy where he would run around with the retrieve but over the course of about six weeks (it was a long slog) we managed to get there through restricting the space and me crouching down, moving backwards etc. Do you have any tips on how I could persuade my dog to give me the retrieve a bit more willingly? I've read 'training spaniels' by Joe Irving and he suggests standing on the puppies front paw to encourage him to release, but in a dog as young as 8 months I don't know if this would make him associate giving me the retrieve with a negative... Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Rob
Hi Paul...thanks for your comments. If you get time please have a look at the previous videos and I think you will hopefully see Percy has quite good eye contact ...He was a bit distracted with the dogs in the next field but it was a good test for him. All the best cheers Nick
Nice video! I'm considering trying the placeboard as well. Maybe that could improve the delivery a bit. In many cases my dogs drop the delivery just before they're at my feet. I've tried dropping to the ground when they are 1-2 meters in front of me. That helps encourage them to come all the way in. But it takes time, getting these things right... :)
Alexander Kittilsen Thanks for your kind comments...have a look at my previous Percy’s Progress video and that may give you a few ideas. Best of luck. Cheers Nick
Hi Nick - hello from Canada. Enjoying your videos as I train my 10 month old Springer bitch under lockdown. Good on the boards, will retrieves balls, bumpers with an enthusiastic outrun but tends to play with them on the return. Some ays she is more focused and does better than other. Any advice? Thanks!
Hi Nick funnily enough Percy can do a similar thing and I just pout it down to him being a pup, you could try using a corner to throw his retrieves in so it cuts down his space when coming back. You could also try shorting the distance you throw any dummy’s again cutting down the option for him to run about. Hope this helps cheers Nick
Nick Ridley Hi Nick tried shorter retrieves and calling her in with whistle just as she gets to the ball or bumper. Today she was fantastic with her return and delivery. Thanks!
I’ve got a pop that is 10 months old he will sit and stay and wait for a command it’s just the retrieving that he will retrieve a tennis ball but will not bring it back to me any tips
Get him on a long line, guide him back, repeat, repeat, before you know it itll turn round,Chris Upton covers it very well on here @ Corleone Gundogs..✌✌🇬🇧🇬🇧
Ewan Farnell Thanks for your comments. Have a look at the previous Percy’s Progress film and that may give you some ideas, I would try and make it more of a game and just let him run in a bit more and this can help to take the pressure off...you can always go back to the steadiness once he has realised what fun playing “fetch” can be. Hope this helps Cheers Nick
Nick Ridley is still dancing around the place board. Great video!
Good work Nick, he is settling nicely.
