But does it do hard packed clay? I need to do a trench but I'm tossing up between a trencher or an excavator.

Hi Troy, our trenchers can also get through hard dry clay. For this particular application we recommend the Diggatac chain option. We have different chains for different ground conditions, feel free to check them out here: www.digga.com/trenchers-chains.html
