- The Boys in the Boat Movie Review - George Clooney directs the powerful story of a team of underdogs, rowing for a chance at glory. This film was felt like the perfect throwback to 90s inspirational movies. I had a blast with this movie and hopefully people will get to theaters to watch it!

I absolutely loved this movie. The audience clapped at the end and sat through the credits before standing up. When was the last time you saw that? Rowing can be boring to watch but the cinematography really captures the excitement when it’s up close. What I found amazing in this age of multimillion dollar athletes is that the main character was pulled out of a shabby homeless camp and beat the equivalent of the World Cup champions. Unbelievable. Don’t miss it. Thanks for your terrific review.
Right on! Such a great time and it feels like forever since we had a great, uplifting film about people overcoming great odds. Glad you enjoyed it too!
Great film!! My son rows at Michigan! Very realistic and just a very fine experience!!
I wish they could have made this into a mini series rather than a movie. There’s just sooo much I would have liked to see included.
Hi from England.. it’s not out here until this weekend and super excited to see it most importantly because a good friend of mine plays Shorty Hunt, one of the boys in the boat! He’s invited me to a private screening this Saturday and I’m so relieved to read your great review! Go Bruce!!
Really good review, and thanks for providing this. Can't wait to go see it, and this incredible story was told brilliantly in Brown's book, which is among the best I've ever read.
I'm probably not going to make it to the movies this period due to health concerns, but upon seeing the trailers for this movie, I can see the level that's operating at. It appears to be a Clint Eastwood classic B movie.
Clint Eastwood is now very aged it appears, and with his last movie, it is clear that his best days are done. And while that's sad, it's important to remember exactly what Mr Eastwood did for us in the 80s and onward, with his directing style. He told great stories that might not have been Academy Award winners, but in fact were great stories being told both succinctly and very understandable, without any complex plot. Clint's B movies were his best movies. Let's just start with Gran Torino and also not to forget, Flags of Our Fathers. No I'm not talking about the budget or the marketing, it's all about the style of direction. I'm hoping George Clooney can fill that gap. I sure hope so because quality B movies reach so many people on so many different levels versus the scant successful high-end movies that will only occasionally hit their mark. The Boy's in the Boat movie looks like a really good B movie. I'm looking forward to streaming it.
The coxswain in the 36 Washington Olympic 8 oar shell that won the Olympic Gold Medal Bob Moch was told before he left for the games that he was Jewish!
hat must have been quite a shock- going into the belly of the beast although the nature of the Nazi beast was not widely known in 1936.
@@westsideflyer7559The most painful part for him was that his father had felt the need to conceal his heritage, even from his own children so they could have a better chance to succeed.
People didn't like Jews in the day.@@smooshiebear80
Great review. Your reviews are the best. Watching this tomorrow morning at the theater.
I absolutely loved the book and immediately thought it would make a great movie. I plan to see it ASAP
Will check this out!! Like the look of and thanks for showcasing
great review - saw it with my wife a week ago and we absolutely loved it. Doesn't try to go woke - no one actor tries to steal the show with their performance. Just solid script, solid acting, and beautifully directed. Not a lot of great movies you can take the whole family to, but this is one of them. Good reminder of the hard times this country has been through in the past (the Great Depression) and the grizzled, hard working Americans it produced.
Loved your review. I just saw this movie today and agree with everything you say.
An enjoyable flick, well worth seeing.
This movie along with Seabiscuit, and any movie about Jesse Owens (also a 1936 Olympian Gold Medalist - no wonder Hitler was PO'd ), needs to be mandatory for every Junior or Senior HS student. An amazing review and movie. How much better can you do than ending the movie with the win?
If you watch the PBS Documentary on this book, Joe Ranst's daughter comments on a story I wish had been in the movie. When the boys were walking around Berlin, they kept seeing the Nazi salute and "Heil Hitler" salutation. A bit confused they would return with the salute and "Heil Roosevelt". Another story was they were given a day off at one of their US competitions. FRD had a vacation home nearby and they decided to just pop in for a visit. FDR's son was home, he was a rower, and invited them in when they knocked on the door!
They sort of kept the first bit in. They substituted “Heil Roosevelt” with “Remember the Alamo!” The book version is much funnier, but the pace of the movie goes pretty fast so I can see why they decided to change it. It really emphasizes how little clue the guys (and most Americans) had at that point of what was really going on in Germany and how silly Hitler and the Nazis seemed at the time.
definitely a throwback to another time of movie making. really enjoyed it; a feel good movie
Yes, like The Holdovers this has a more traditional storytelling style and a good night's entertainment. Wouldn't Jesse Owen's story make a similar movie that I hope gets picked up one day? Loved the mouth megaphones that reminded me of a few people I know.
I read the book last year, and it quickly became one of my favorite books I've ever read. This is a true underdog story, which I am definitely a sucker for!
Thanks for your review....I'll have to watch it. 😊
Hmmm, this movie sounds interesting. while i knew George Clooney i did not know he was a director also haha. the more we know! this isn't in my country but i will check it out when it hits streaming, Great Review!
I'm seeing it later tonight , I'm a rower my self just like them so I'm actually quite exited to watch it
I saw this movie today and loved it!
I saw the Boys in the Boat last night and absolutely loved it. I love the book too. Thank you for your great review.
That would be a good podcast, favourite sports movies. I personally love Varsity Blues and The Replacements
Just saw this movie yesterday and I really loved it. Just a feel good movie, rooting for the underdog. My whole theater was laughing and cheering for the team at every win.
Absolutely awesome 👍❤I went to the movie. The best movie for 2023!
A lot of the framings looked like copies of Chariots of Fire. I was a kid when I saw that, and was bored as hell. I suspect I'd be bored by this as well. I really haven't matured
Chariots of Fire is excruciating.. it’s so boring
@@zacgale4231 LOL, I just watched Chariots of Fire for the first time and it's crazy that it won best picture because I agree that it was so boring, and I just didn't care about the characters.
Very enjoyable.A feel good movie.
What prompted the decline in old fashioned underdog sports movies?
Those are my favorite kind and so it's disappointing for sure.
I think they’ve fallen a bit to the wayside with the emergence of comic book super hero blockbusters
Lol, the outcome is not really a surprise if you read the full title of the book.
❤movie !! ❤❤❤ the book !!
EXCELLENT MOVIE 🏆!!! ❤
Young men rowers.... 😋😋😋😎
Opened in England today, very disappointing movie IMHO. Not so much The Boys in the Boat, most were ignored and left anonymous. Very little sense of jeopardy, skipped over so much team building. Had a lot of George Clooney's niceness, but completely lacked bite. Dead in the water imho.
You mention a subdued performance, entire film was subdued.
The book was fantastic. It’s a shame that they had to condense so much and leave out a lot more to get through three years worth of events. It really makes you feel what the boys, and everyone of that generation, went through. The boys were able to get work, but accommodations were not included and Joe had to live in a cold, damp basement. There’s enough storyline to have easily made it into a miniseries. For instance, the coach was going to replace Don Hume for the final race with the substitute because he was still in really rough shape. The other eight boys basically told him they didn’t care what he said, that they were going to strap Don in and do the work for him or basically not race. They were all determined not to let each other down.
What other 9 movies were good?
I will have an end of year video on them
There is no way that this movie will ever compare to the greatest sports movie of all time centered around personal struggle and adversity. DodgeBall.
Oh jeez... I don't know man. I thought this was mid as Hell. Just super rote and formulaic. I already forget half of what happened.
Glad you liked it - (it was exceptionally well made) - but just super average to me.
I mean, I fully admit that it's nothing amazing. I have just been craving some good old fashion feel good stories in 2023. It's rare.

@@AdamDoesMovies Yep
Are you hoping for a No Prize? Wrong franchise.
You look a lot like Steven Crowder
Should I start wearing a stupid gun holster to complete the look?
@@AdamDoesMovies Well, I think having props in your videos could go a long way when it comes to gaining more subscribers! Maybe even give a little history on the items as well. I know I would love to see things like that.
im #100
Left wingers will complain that there are not any black people on the rowing team. LOL
It’s history, dude. It’s not about todays politics. I did find it interesting that they used Jesse Owens’ quote about showing, not the Nazis, but the people back home. Rather poignant about people’s attitudes toward people of color in 1930’s America.
Top ten of the year???? What other 9 movies did you watch that were any good? I can't remember anything good that came out this year.
Nothing else good this year? Aw man, sorry you felt that way. I remember Dead Reckoning, Oppenheimer, John Wick 4, the Super Mario Bros movie, Spiderverse, Godzilla Minus One etc.
@terrymcginnis01 Super Mario Brothers was good, you're right. I haven't watched Oppenheimer yet. Also haven't watched the latest John Wick mainly because I gave up on the franchise after Chapter 3.
I think it technically came out last year, but I saw it in theatres in 2023. Everything everywhere all at once. Def one of my favorites of all time. Also dungeons and dragons was very very good
@@annelacey7007I haven’t seen it, but everyone I know that saw Super Mario Brothers said it was terrible.
This movie was so disappointing. Little or inaccurate background. Subpar writing and acting. No emotional engagement for the viewers. This movie is more of a chick flick than anything. Very low budget film and it shows. It's a shame that Daniel Brown's masterpiece has come to this. Read the book to be entertained.
What background would you want, they give enough. He is alone on college and poor looking for a job. There is plenty of emotion engagement making you care for the emotions and mental state of the main character. Also how is this a chick flick
@joeyd4364 I completely agree with you!
@@df_productionsI’m guessing they are so upset about how much had to be cut. The book did a really excellent job of conveying how difficult times were then, both physically and emotionally. The story helped you get to know several of the guys a lot better than the movie. Bobby Moch’s father wrote him a letter explaining that he was Jewish, but had kept it a secret from everyone, even his kids, because he thought it was necessary for them to have a better life. It was really moving. I think the book did a better job at showing how Moch, despite being tiny in comparison the the other 8, was the one in charge not just because he was a good coxswain, but because they respected him.
As far as chic flick, in real life Joe and Joyce were already engaged when they got to college and so their romance had a much different tone than “Will they get together?” It was more how he realized he had let Joyce in, and counted on her, and could start to do so with the boys, too.
@@smooshiebear80 so you agree with me? But I would say it’s not a chick flick because it’s way more about the boat than the relationship between the two
