Very interesting interview! I like the author's straightforward and engaging way of addressing the questions you put to her. I think this interviewing series has promise. It's also nice to hear you read, Diane! I don't think I'm alone when I say, it seems that audio loves your voice the way the camera loved Marilyn Monroe. Thanks for another great post!

Loved this. I think this was very refreshing. The video was very well put together and i enjoyed that. I'm used to the two way interview were you see both persons but i prefer this style.

Is the editor the one who writes the book or is Mindy the writer. What do you mean by editor. It sounds like books are written by a team in America... Here in Holland writers write their book all by themselves and then look for a publisher, we don't know any editors or agents. It is a lonely profession in the low countries, but the result is also worth it. Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos (probably a team too).

In American publishing, authors must first submit their manuscript to a literary agent and gain representation. That literary agent acts on their behalf to pitch the novel to publishers. Once the novel is acquired by a publishing house (such as Macmillan or Penguin Random House), there are various editors who will work with the author to help polish the book. This includes developmental editing for the content as well as copy editing and proofreading.
With established authors like Mindy who have already published their first book, their editors at the publishing house might ask them to pitch ideas before they write their next novel. The author might write a one-page summary of the concept before drafting the manuscript itself, and the editor provides feedback on the idea at that early stage to make sure it's viable in the market. So, just as in Holland, authors write their own books, and they have a team of editors at a publishing house to help them revise and market it. I hope that clarifies the traditional publishing process.
There are a few big-name authors and indie publishing groups that write collaboratively. James Patterson, for example, has a team of writers on his various series. He credits the cowriter on the cover, and the "James Patterson" name is more of a brand than a singular author.
Thank you for your kind words about my videos! I actually make all of them on my own, without a team. I use Keynote for the visuals and then edit the video in iMovie. :)

Interesting. I am currently working on a story with dual timelines: the parallel lives of two men - one the ancestor, the other his descendant. One from the 19th century, the other in the 21st.

I have a similar idea but not exactly. It's not ancestory thing.

On the point of ego vs humility, Miyazaki (who plots his movies as discovery writer) said something along the lines of; you have to believe every movie you make is going to change the world, even though you know it obviously won't. The world will just be the same.
