*UNRELEASED FOOTAGE* Gentle Giant Backstage Interview on June 1st, 1980.

- We have recently discovered a full unedited backstage interview of the Boys in the Band that took place on June 1st, 1980 at Gusman Cultural Center in Miami.
Jack Skelly who compiled Gentle Giant's Tour History had chronicled the events of that evening:
"Interestingly, Derek introduced the song Knots to the crowd as a “psychedelic” song. One fan claims Giant looked ill during this concert, even remembering John Weathers repeatedly throwing up into a bucket on stage during the show. As it turns out, the fan was correct. The band had eaten some bad burgers beforehand, jokingly described by Derek in a backstage press interview after the gig, as “Kentucky Fried Rat”. This also explains why Derek frequently left the stage when he was not singing. The food poisoning hit the players when the opening act, a group called Hoochie, took the stage, and continued through all of Giant’s set. Gary recalls this difficult gig, but says they still managed to put on a good show, even though they played without their own lighting and sound rig. This equipment was, unfortunately, on its way to Houston, the site of the following night’s show."

Some of the greatest and most underrated musicians of all time!
the greatest most criminally underated band ever
They are too advanced for normal people. Ordinary people will never understand their art. Tks GG for existing and opening up my mind and soul for such extraordinary music
@@luckenglishguitar440 They were the textbook definition of a "progressive" band in the 70's.
to think some people consider Dream Theatre to be great prog. They really need to study up and listen to the great Gentle Giant.
Only underated for the ones that don't know their Music or Prog !!!
Yah Hear that "Rolling Stone Mag" You Shitty Rag !!! Lol : D
@@jamiepastman5594 Totally.
and 40 years later....we are all 'spineless blobs' watching this on home computer. :-)
I was awestruck when I heard John and Gary go into that! LOL Little did they know.
UA-cam has stolen my life
I read the comments before watching this video; and was looking for this quote! Eerie!
and I just noticed John says we'll all be "sitting in front of our home computers doing all our shopping from it! That'll be bit nasty that!".. Wow.. Crazy prediction in 1980!!! These guys were always ahead of their time! (around 7:25 )..
John foresaw Amazon, Bezos owes him.
Really loving the effort put into releasing all of this on youtube this past few months. A great surprise in this awful year.
Well said - I totally agree!
You all prolly dont care but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Carter Ronan Instablaster ;)
@Archie Darwin Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Archie Darwin it worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
the interviewer is an absolute embarrassment- GG is being quite gracious of course. They were going through a really bad time and soon to break up but still very nice. Amazing to see Minnear especially, my musical hero
Why is it an embarrassment? I'm neutral on the band. So real question. Thanks.
@@Frip36 Perhaps not embarrassment, my bad. But his questions are so generic they could be for any rock band, he obviously knows nothing about them. Which may not be his fault, he may just be doing a job. I guess I just mean he should know more about them before he goes out to do an interview. He sounds, alarmingly, a lot like the "interviewer" on the album "Interview.:" "Well --- where should we begin then?"
@@jamiepastman5594 I totally agree with you. Interviewer seemed like a total rookie. “What will you be doing 5-10 years from now?” and “ one word to describe music” …. Just dumb questions.
23:40 Gary smokes the doobie and Kerry gets the munchies. That is some serious band synchronicity!
lol
My Heroes!!!! Gentle Giant...
Mine too
4:20 huh? I've been humming GG melodies for the past 50 years. Probably more than any other band come to think of it.
I know right? One thing I find myself humming more than anything else is the end bit of Experience…. 🎼Master inner voices…making the choices.
Many of their songs are extremely hummable if you understand what you're hearing
Legends of Prog Rock!
"Ray's in the other room....doing unmentionable things..."
Lol...
Can you just imagine the music we would have been treated to had they not broken up? The 90's would have been incredible.
Then we may not have had Pantera or Dream Theater hit big. 😊
Unlike what happened to Yes and ELP ....... Notice I didn't mention King Crimson. Jesus when you think about it ... The only band that came close to me in the 1990's since I'm not a Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree r band or Pantera I don't know what they were but I couldn't stand Pantera ( they weren't even Prog ) .. I don't know why... But the only band was early Phish ..... By 1998 they turned to shit ... Fuck it all music has turned to shit .... What's a great band Halen Greta Enema ??????????????????? ....
Love this footage. Interviewer clearly has no knowledge of the band's history as he seems to focus on the videotape and digital technology. You can see looks in each of members faces that show between the food poisoning, bad interviewer, and changing musical tastes is just becoming too much.
24:02 I don't know why I find it so funny watching Kerry eat that Chicken Wing haha!
The Boys in the Band 💕
They seem pretty relaxed and content for a bunch of guys who are about to call it a day.
Priceless video of my heroes. I was lucky enough to see them during this tour. Phenomenally talented group.
Great interview, but you can see the fatigue and the slight boredom with it all.......shame, they were a fantastic band - great musicians!
I was very fortunate to interview Derek Shulman on my radio show in 2019 in Canada. 30 minutes of great chat. At the end of the interview I began to sing Knots and Derek started to chuckle. I asked him to sing it with me and he said " I know where I come in on my part.... but no thanks .it's ok ". Super gentleman and GG fan forever. I was fortunate to see them LIVE in 1975 and 76. Brilliant band.
You can almost tell that Derek’s already thinking A&R and where to go next...... Thank you for 10 years of the most amazing captivating music that’s ever been created.
Oh man, to someone who is a GG fanboy, this is gold. Great easy going guys who play brilliant arrangements.
my goodness - there are hundreds of melodies (sections) that are incredibly "hummable"!! The interviewer is piss poor.
Maybe but not the album "interview." ;)
@@mikereiss4216 lol
I don't know about you guys, but I definitely walk around while humming Gentle Giant tunes.
I’ve been waking up with their tunes in my head.
Thanks very much for this. Five incredible musicians who should have been world famous. Never mind - there’s still time!
Saw these guys on the Civilian tour, Lee Abrams introduced me to Ray. Among the best Musicians and bassist on the planet.
Wow! What a bunch of professionals! No surprise when you consider the quality of their music
"nobody really goes around humming Gentle Giant" ?!???!!!?
Im humming at least 6 different melodies of the song "In a glass house" on a daily basis!
Anything great always ends at some point.
Hopefully not at the same time....
My fav of their albums right now!!!
4:27 "Nobody goes around humming around gentle giant songs"? Speak for yourself buddy. I do all the time. Even my girlfriend does it because she heard me listen to it.
Gentle Giant fans can get girlfriends?
Agreed!!! They are the most musically utopian band I’ve ever heard. Even when a songs structure of rigor is confusing, I am instantly addicted to some aspect of it, be it a riff, hook, or infectious melodic line. These guys are amazing.
Great to see such footage of the band.
This band was ahead of its time and flew over the heads of a lot of people, it’s not until now that they have really been recognized for that.
One of my favourite bands of all time. There must have been something in the water in Britain in the early seventies - all this amazing music that has aged better than most music that came after...
Very cool interview - many bands would not allow this right before or after a show. At this point they didn't seem to suggest the band was done - but they would do their last show just a few weeks after this. Maybe they had intended to continue but decided to end the band after this tour was done.
22:01 "What do you see Gentle Giant doing 5-10 years from now..?" This is heart breaking!!!
Heartbreaking indeed.
From this interview it sounds like the band had plans for the future, but of course it wasn't to be.
Here's something, I saw Gentle Giant at The Whisky in LA and I standing next to John playing drums. All of a sudden, without missing a beat, he heaves into a bucket. What a memory, can't believe the topic of this clip!
To me this seems to be exactly the situation Derek sings about in „Interview“... this also explains the expression in his face 😒
What are your plans for the future now?
And can you say who does the writing then?
How did you get -- who gave the name of the band?
There’s lots of amazing stuff in this interview but hearing them speaking about Mt. Saint Helens just couple months after it erupted is pretty fascinating to me :0
I love them though they’re so great
I saw the show in Houston the next night and I happily say no signs of sickness as I recall. All were quite chatty and friendly afterwards
I’m glad you guys said we’ve had enough you are the best band I have ever had the pleasure to listen to and your legacy will remain intact forever much respect and god speed in whatever you are doing now ❤️❤️❤️✌️✌️✌️💪💪💪🏴🏴🏴💘
LOL, Gary -- "It's digital. It doesn't any degradation of quality."
Man... Way of Life... a friend of mine said that is an acrobatic riff. And I couldn’t agree more!!! Great album btw!
Gentle Giant came to my life something about ten years now... and it’s here to stay!! Forever!!
Jesus, foooooooooorty-one years ago! I'm old and decrepit. Reading the Tipitaka in Pali. Meditating daily. Cramming for my finals!! All conditioned things are impermanent
Instead of breaking up in 1980 - Gentle Giant should have done a concept album in 1981 called "Spineless Blobs"...
They should have picked any random fan from the audience to do this interview. Ugh. Funny that he was so impressed by the drum bash. By 1980 most of the people around me had seen the drum bash so many times already that they chose that time to take a bathroom break or fill the pipe.and light up. This video also confirms what I posted on list very early on -- that Heineken was their choice beer, at least on the east coast of the US!
Stumbled on this video today and it brings tears to my eyes to see. So many years the fascination continues. And I do hum their music all the time, have done so for around 35 years when I first started buying their records. My daughter in her mid twenties who likes to sing also enjoys their music.
My three favourite artists of all time have always been the same since 1992. Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull & Steely Dan.
Imagine how delightied I was to discover Gentle Giant three years ago. Where have you been all my life? Not many better than these guys , IMO.
Agreed! Just discovered them a month ago.
same here. Late to the party I have to admit
Gary Green toking on a doobie during the photo shoot made my day 🙂
Thanks for publishing! As for me from way up north in Norway, experiencing a GG consert was unheard and when I was so old that I might could have realized to go to a liveshow GG was splitted so its so nice to se this intervjus and all the concertvideos here on youtube, thanks! Best band ever!
I frequently hum Gentle Giant songs.
I'm so thankful that people were very smart to get a lot of GG live video. Tons of videos out there, and the thing is, the band are as good live as their records, maybe better. Ridiculous.
This is really strange. It's awesome to see them, still looking tight as a group of people, but knowing that it's just several weeks before the end. Crazy!
La mia band preferita in assoluto.....my favorite band absolutely....un saluto dall'Italia.....a fan from Italy.....
(with the concert) "I was quite impressed". I think that's what's called 'dammed by faint praise'.
strangely prescient about the internet..!
FREE SPAGHETTI!!!
Thanks for sharing
Amazing Christmas present. Our Gentle-Giant-worshiping free improv cult thanks you
That was nice and fun to watch. Especially Gary and John were quite fun through the interview
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you and Merry Christmas GG!
Giant never SLEEPS
By 1980 the magical mercurial GG had run out of road and disbanded soon after a wonderful musical journey that few other bands could have made .
They are the ultimate prog band. I'm just after listening to the Steven Wilson remix of Free Hand. What a brilliant album, so underrated by their own country.
10:00 I love their sense of humour!
I think the interviewer was unfamiliar with Gentle Giant before he did this! An "attractive element"? It's called music! These guys seem like good blokes, and they made it a great interview ultimately.
I really want a mouse burger now.
breakfast for $2.95!!! Those days are gone forever
A sharp lad, Green
"Civilian" was released three months before this.
Why is it that most talented bands have to suffer "idiot" reporters who interview bands they know absolutely nothing about, never mind the music!!! 🎶🎵😕
4:22 I always find myself humming Gentle Giant songs. 😂
this was 15 days before they broke up, Gentle Giant was over and done on June 16 1980.
they're all bummed out at this point, they all knew this was the last tour and the band was done in just a couple of weeks and didn't want to seem to spill the beans.
Get well soon Derek
Can you please show us footage when Phil Shulman was in the band in 1970-1973?
Gary has a Nigel Tufnel vibe here.
There must appear a new DVD, Giant in the Stream, or somewhat.
Derek looks exhausted here.
well his soul was dying, as his life's dream was drying up!
how bizarre that he went into A&R and signed BON JOVI et al!
@@dumpygoodness4086 definitely bizarre. Even more so that Bon Jovi is my
Most detested band ever
❤️❤️❤️
BRILLIANT
Think I see why the interview was never released.
Yes if ur a fan of The Original Genesis of the 70s u have to be a Fan of GENTLE GIANT.
SO UNDERRATED ONLY A TEN YEAR RUN BUT ALOT OF AMAZING ALBUMS BTY DERRICK SIGNED BON JOVI AFTER THE BAND HE BECAME A VICE PRESIDENT OF
POLY GRAM RECORDS.
Do they normally have big concerts on a Sunday night?
7:30 John Weathers predicting the future! (And part of the Wall-E movie script).
They all knew this was the last tour, so the laughter around 22:00 is especially poignent to me.
I was at that show!!!
"No one goes around humming Gentle Giant Songs" . I completely disagree
Who was the guy at the end posing with the band wearing a floral T-shirt with a mustache?
wow this interview was just 2 weeks before they split.
I ℓﻉ√٥ Acquiring The Taste, Three Friends, Octopus, In A Glass House, Power And The Glory, Free Hand, then I skip over some, and love Civilian. I'm sorry GG fans, but Civilian is brilliant.
Agree with you on civilian but skipping over interview and missing piece is so wrong and strongly disagree
@@1359401 WHAT YOU SAID!!!
@@1359401 I loved Interview when I was a kid, great stuff on all their records, just mentioning the 7 records of theirs that are my favs!.
Civilian had a couple of excellent tunes. Too bad they stopped. They could have continued making great music.
Missing Piece - As Old As You’re Young. One of GG’s greatest tunes, period
Right before they broke up for good, correct? They seem to be getting along ok; had always heard they were clashing during the final tour.
Pretty sure the brothers were. But you know how that is.
I wonder where that interviewer is today.
Giant Giant was one of most pretentious band ever at the same time one of the greatest ones... Forever!
I wonder if the guys had decided to call it a day when doin the interview
who was the fellow with the short leave Hawaiian shirt?
Was he their manager?
The burgers that broke the band.
7:32 dang they're not wrong
Vou dar uma sugestão, coloquem legenda!!!!!!
Was Lee Abrams hanging out?
Gary smoking a j @ 23:52 😊
People don’t go around humming Gentle Giant tunes?….. Is he out of his mind? All I do is go around humming Gentle Giant tunes.
Was Gary smoking a fattie near the end ?
Future? This is where their career ended.
