  • DATA BOOTCAMP SCAMS // Data bootcamps are mostly a scam. Both data analyst bootcamps and data science bootcamps overpromise what’s possible by completing their program. New companies are jumping on the analytics bandwagon everyday to make money off of people eager to make the salaries of data analysts and data scientist by offering their own data bootcamps.
    Why are they such a waste? Are there any that are worth your money?
    Many people get lured into the idea of a data boot camp because their selling point is that with a few months and a few thousand dollars, you’ll be in a brand new career in data analytics or data science.
    What a shortcut! Skip the 4+ year degree and the tens of thousands of student loans and quickly get a job paying $80k, $100k or even more as a data analyst or data scientist!
    Sound too good to be true? You know what they say about deals like that...
    Also find out if I feel the same way about coding bootcamps

    How are these problems different from a college degree. Most of them over promise and depends on the individual to make something out of it.

      Fair point. At least most colleges are accredited and a specific degree carries some value in potentially getting hired. You're absolutely right that there's a lot that depends on each individual to do the work and make something out of it.

      @Fantastic Jelly I find that more and more programming jobs are omitting the need for post-secondary diplomas in their job requirements (with the exception being a few big tech companies). I understand the concerns laid out in the video but I would argue that college and university courses suffer from the same problem. For example, if you want to be a data scientist, rarely are there college and university programs that focus solely on data science. You would have to take a comp sci course and learn front-end, mobile app, back-end, server-side programming, software development along with data science.

    It’s really easy to say something is a SCAM if people were already skeptical about it. I graduated from a coding bootcamp myself, I don’t know how good the data science student were after graduating but the most established bootcamps are NOT scams.

    University degrees also do not come with a job guarantee. Do you call this a scam then? I don't think every bootcamp has a job guarantee. It provides a structured curriculum with career support. I think it might be worth it for some people.

      The problem is lack of regulation. Theres no obligation to provide good quality. They hire cheap labor with no qualifications to teach and charge high fees to make money. It's unethical. At least university professors have advanced degrees. U never know the quality of Bootcamp teachers. Some of these schools hire unqualified ppl from overseas remotely on minimum wage.

  • @ashleywagner9723
    @ashleywagner9723 3 роки тому +38

    Scam is way too aggressive. No one is comparing a boot camp to a 4-year degree, and you will not be 100% prepared for your job upon graduation from either. Feeding into fear is never a way to teach, so please do better. I hope anyone who did not or will not pursue boot camps based on this video will revisit that decision, and make a logically sound decision of their own.
    This video contains ideas to consider, but if we are using the words 'overpromising' and 'scam' synonymously every sales staff in America would risk being labeled as a scam. As someone who should be encouraging entrance into these fields, this video does not align.

      I agree. I recently applied to Full Sail's Bachelor degree Computer science with focus on AI. I wanted to do the remote program however it is asynchronous with some 1 on 1 time with professors and of course slack. The bootcamps I was looking into have full time remote LIVE classes with a teacher and one school had a part time that was still live classes. I just feel if you are going to spend all of that money why not get live instruction? Anyway, my point was if I am taking a bachelor program or a bootcamp program, it all depends on how I apply myself and what I am putting into the education that will determine outcome.

I would imagine that at that point you now have a base knowledge of what data analyst do and can build upon that experience.

    i think DS Bootcamp don't "promise" you what you related in the video (high salary, same level in statistics as University graduates, etc), in fact they are very useful for beginners who want to switch to a data science career with some background in stats, probability and linear algebra. And they provide you strong basics to get an entry-level job (with a relative good salary due to the supply and demand mechanism that leads to it), it depends on the candidate to capitalize on these first steps.
    Moreover, DS bootcamps are aware that tech industry involves a lifelong learning and good networking skills, that's why a good DS bootcamp provide you the theorical and practical tools to be able to do the job, often they offer a lifelong access to platform to learn new skills and practices, but also a career coaching to help you land a job in the industry

      SPSS is a great tool mainly for smaller data sets. I consider it more a data analysis tool than a business analysis tool. • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  5 років тому +9

      The Georgia tech boot camp is a great example of the boot camps that I talk about in the video. Looking at the curriculum, it would give a good overview for someone that's not familiar with analytics and tools. Most people would not be able to come out of that program with no other degree or experience and get into a data analyst role. I appreciate that they're not advertising it as that though. Looking at who they say it's for, it's positioned more towards adding some analytic skills that make you are more attractive candidate to employers, not specifically to build all the skills to become a data analyst / data scientist. It could be a good starting point option for someone that has a harder time learning on their own and has extra money to spend. At $10,000, it seems like a stiff price to pay to still have to do a lot more work on your own.

    Excuse me also attended and work for a data bootcamp we have many successful candidates. Just what you make of it. Not all get there but over 50% do with a lot of study, practice, and refinement. I am a hiring manager at my company as well and see college students with less skills for the field than someone with a degree. Do the research yourself, the key skills you need for data analytics are obvious but determination and persistance is rare and the course structures and keeps you on track. Everything can be measured and the time you put in adds up. Complete the course and get the job.

    I took the best bootcamp in India. It was a waste of money and time for me. It wasn't for me who knows coding. I want something which has lot of questions and projects like DataCamp. Which focuses on solving by doing.
    If you want to learn the theoretical part then go for bootcamp but at last you will need a lot of practice.
    Humans learns by doing so I prefer DataCamp is the best for getting your hands dirty.

    I have to completely agree with what she is saying. Data Bootcamps may be a good start for learning about the tools, methodologies, and problems you can tackle with data. You start gaining experience doing some projects, but you have a long way to go. You really need a good base in Statistics and other fields that I doubt you can learn it in a few months. You also need to gain experience by solving problems and working on unique and new projects. I know you can get some during a Bootcamp, but it is just a start, you can’t get it in a few months. Then you also need to gain domain experience, for example my career has let me down the road of first getting experience handling data related to finance and then to marketing analytics. It is an amazing journey in which you learn by applying what you learn , doing research, and most importantly from you mistakes. You also learn a lot from working with other peers in your field. It is very important to have a mentor that can guide you and from whom you can learn from. Really good video and reasoning !!

    if you use this as a definition of scam, most things in the world are scam. The model you desribed is just how it works in all fields. someone with deep desire will always benefit from the stuff he learns, someone who does not care a bit about the topic, will get no benefit from any educational program. there are always just a few who are standing out.
    And yeah if you do not have deep motivation please do not apply to anything that has a word "bootcamp" in it, unless you are looking for a very humbeling experience, what is not a bad thing

      Their program is for people that already have "a Ph.D. in a quantitative field, such as Physics, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Statistics, Neuroscience, Bioinformatics, Engineering, Computer Science, or quantitative Social Science." It's also free. It's really focused on bridging between education and entering the workforce. It seems like a great program if you meet the qualifications but it's also not designed to teach someone all of the data science skills that they would need. They're anticipating people coming into their program already have all of that knowledge.

    Thanks a lot for great info. I have almost two decades of experience in IT and have taken tons of courses from coursera in ML and now planning to go for expensive course from MIT. My goal is to transition into clinical data analysis field in a senior role. Most of my experience as a software architect has been in finance domain , so do you think MIT applied data science course is a good one and can help me get into pharma or healthcare IT field. I see ML is already changing how healthcare is delivered so hoping to be part of that.

    Would you say Springboard's Data Science Career Track falls into this category of being a scam?

    • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  4 роки тому +5

      I have mixed feelings about Springboard. I appreciate that they offer a money back guarantee if you don't find a job but that's not as simple as a thing as it sounds.
      For starters, if you look at the demographics of people that take the data science track, over half have a masters or PhD. 72% (!) have at least one year of experience with 45% of people having two or more years of experience in data science already. See screenshot from springboards website: imgur.com/a/aknDcfr
      They also put a lot of expectations to be able to request the refund... Pick multiple interesting projects to work on, apply for a certain number of jobs each week, etc.
      That being said, it seems like many people that take the training are very satisfied with it.
      I haven't personally taken any courses they've offered or worked with anyone that has gone through their tracks. Looking at the data they provide though, the vast majority of people taking their courses are not new to analytics which makes me hesitant to say confidently that you can take their courses with no prior analytics experience and expect to land a data analyst job.

      @@rachidrezzik I'm spending about a good 16 hours a week. I would say they definitely do help you out. They have a on demand mentor call which you can talk to someone on Skype for about 40 mins if you run into any coding issues. They also have career coaches that provide good job insights. In the end I feel however it's up to you to push yourself to get out there and find a job.

      Justin Huang do you feel like the concepts and material they present actually translates to the projects you’re doing.
