- Giving definite and accurate answers in dentistry is hard. There are so many variables to take into account that when someone asks me a question like, "How long will my filling last?" it's almost impossible to give a good answer. The real answer is...it depends. It depends on how big the filling is, how much decay was in the tooth before the filling was put in, and how well you are taking care of that filling. In general, a small filling will last longer than a large filling. So getting cavities fixed when they are very small means the filling will probably last a lot longer than waiting until the cavity gets very large and you need a large filling.
One of the most common reasons that fillings need to be replaced is getting a cavity underneath an old filling. This can happen if food and plaque is not getting cleaned off the tooth and filling regularly, or you have a lot of sugar in your diet. This causes the decay to start forming again and in dental jargon it's called recurrent decay. How to avoid dentists:
Avoid eating hard foods
Avoid sugary and acidic foods
Tooth killers are sticky, sour and sugary things.
Do not brush your teeth soon after eating acid food. Instead try to rinse your mouth with water or just floss.
Say goodbye to soft drinks. They murder your teeth.
Search what foods are good for your teeth and try to eat them more often. Cheese, sesame, olive, green tea...
Stop drinking coffee~ Replace it with green tea. It also keeps you young and fresh!
Brush twice a day with a soft brush (Learn how to brush properly so to avoid hurting your gum). Throw away hard brush. Just keep a medium brush and use it seldom just to remove stains only on your teeth and without contacting your gum.
Floss while brushing and use thin floss and push tooth paste between your teeth after brushing (this is so effective to stop carries).
Rinse your mouth with saltwater for 2 mins after brushing.
Rinse your mouth twice a week with Hydrogen Peroxide (%3) solution.
Doing this for 30 years. Never had a filling afterwards or gum disease.
Using extra thin floss is so important for your gum. Thick flossing destroys your gum.

I regret for not taking care of my teeth during my teen years. I got 4 extraction but fortunately most of them are molars or inside which is not visible even when I smile fully. I also have 5 filling, 4 are small the one is quite large. Got braces at 27, I am now 28 and I become so aware of my oral health now, I drink only water and sometime raw pure ginger.Pyodontyl is my toothpaste, I brush thrice a day and using Interdental brush at night. Never been this happy like this before, my teeth is so bright looking and my gums became pink.

I have a lot of filling in my teeth. so in order for them to make it long last, I hardly avoiding from eating hard kind of food. Because We all know that it's just a filling, means not real teeth. And it also because it is not a real tooth means it remove easily when you're not biting or even chewing your food correctly. So be careful on what you eat.

I've had one filling about 10 years and in the middle of chewing gum, I a very small piece of my filling came out. I'm gonna see the dentist as soon as possible to get this fixed. It doesn't hurt when I eat anything (although I'm very careful nonetheless the less).
Edit/update: since posting this comment, I got my filling replaced about 5 days after posting said comment. The procedure went over without incident and everything is fine! :D

I got a tooth filling when I was in 3rd grade. Half of my front teeth broken down because of an accident. When I reached 9th grade I foolishly bite a seed and the filling broken down again. I don't think sensitive teeth need a root canal you should take an second opinion from another dentist
TWO ROOT CANALS they take a long time and the process may hurt ever now and then but it may help in the long run that's why he is saying get it.
I mean a friend of mine told me that her fillings literally fell about a year after getting them and doing some research on the internet i've seen some bad, ugly fillings so far. Like I've had 5 fillings so far( and still going) and my dentist is so skilled I don't even feel the difference; she managed to mold and secure my fillings in such a way it's like they were never there in the first place. Despite the fact that she told me that in 10 years I should get them redone I feel like they're gonna last a lifetime lol

No I went two the dentist today to check my teeth I had 14 cavity two year ago and they did a feeling and now today I have 8 cavity and I only had this filling for two years
After filling you have to take very good care of your teeth as your dentin may be exposed if parts of the filling material wears off and that part of the tooth is 9 times more prone to cavities than the enamel surface
I have a question, my cavity filling just broke while i was eating. There is a gap between my tooth and the remaining part of the filling large enough to stick part of my tongue in. My dental office is closed for some reason until monday... today is friday. Can i wait that long or should i got to another office and be seen asap?

Just make sure you don't eat a lot of sugar. And don't let food particles get stuck for a long time . Brush twice a day . And make sure you don't eat a lot of hard food else the other part may break too.

@@vaishali293 I found a dentist who is willing to help me with my bad teeth I had fears from in the past from dentist's who just wanted to pull out all of my teeth out, now I love my new dentist I get a quote for my next appointment so I can save for it, just yesterday I got 5 filling in my rotten front teeth, and that's just the front ones it cost $300, Its a quick solution just for the time being to help stop my front teeth from rotting away, now I have cut down on my sugar and I make sure I brush twice a day.

Im here wanting to know how long fillings generally last for (e.g approx 5 or 10 years) but she never gave an answer but instead keeps on talking about factors which could reduce the lasting period of the fiillings. kinda found this not helpful at all.
This topic is really debatable many of the dentist say that we must have a composite filling changed in 5-7 years, an amalgam one in 15-20 years and about gold some say it can even last 50 years.
However, one dentist who has some fillings himself has told that as long as you care for it a composite filling can last for a lifetime in most cases.

Im terrified my dentist checked my teeth and she said it might be rct we need xray first, but it is just a super small decay and it doesnt even hurt at all no sensitivity whatsoever, im worried if she wants to get more or they dont do fillings without xray? Im anxious because I dont have any problems with that tooth and problems might come in the future if I do rct 😬

@@zweenanyimbo734 i cant really explain the process, but the doctor told me that she applied a permanent one in my third refill. Although my dentist in the third was new, the dentist who refilled the first and second was a different doctor, the second time i got refilled my doctor said it was a permanent one, it lasted for about 3 years maybe.
The only time you should have the tooth removed is if it's infected and even then you can try saving it with a root canal. When your filling breaks you should get it replaced asap because new decay in the dentin part of the tooth can spread more easily than if it was only on the enamel

If the pain persists despite having fillings, then the tooth may require further treatment. The pain radiating to your jaw and ear is part of the issue and commonly seen.

My tooth filling fell out just 2-3 months after putting it in. It was in the 2 front upper teeth but in the back of it but it's my fault that it fell out because I did not take care of it well.
