  • Lagavulin 16, it's a stalwart of the Scotch Whisky world, and a classic Islay malt that's fallen out of favour with the enthusiast community in the last few years - of recent times, the Lagavulin 8 has seemed like a better value, if very different, proposition from the distillery. A current trend with Lagavulin 16 is to see it at a knockdown price to tempt buyers - and it certainly worked on me.

This was my outstanding gateway scotch into peated whisky and even at $165 Canadian before taxes it's still a regular purchase! I adore it and honestly IMO I can't go wrong with any Lagavulin! It's my favourite distillery! The Lagavulin 8 is terrific edgy and of course younger and it's $65.00 less than the Lagavulin 16 but for me it doesn't come close to the Lag 16! It almost never falls below $165.00 here (government controlled liquor stores in my province) except for the occasional sale where it goes down to about $155. It doesn't happen often. Cheers! 🙂

Steep! But value is ultimately in the hands of the consumer, and if this is doing everything you want it to and delivering an enjoyable experience, then yes, it's worth every penny!

Dude loving the whole new look, the branding, funky art style, brilliant for your channel. Like many Laga 16 has a soft spot in my heart and I truly feel that it what this bottle is riding on now. Not a bad bottle but nothing compared to the "up and comers" Cracking review as always mate. Cheers!

Given your background in design that means a lot! I was kind of just messing around and before I knew it I liked what I had! My sentiments too - it's not so much it's gotten worse, but stood still and is beginning to get surpassed.

One of my favorite distilleries. Prices are what they are. Cheers my friend.

Somebody gave me a bottle of this a couple of years ago, and then someone else gave me two thirds of a bottle of it recently. At that price? I'll happily drink it and enjoy it.
This being said, it is now $190 Canadian in Ontario which is the same price as their Distillers Edition, a much richer and deeper whisky in every aspect. Still 16, but far more yummy.
Unfortunately, at that cost, it's now out of budget range.
Favourite peat bombs for me...anCnoc Peatheart, Compass Box Peat Monster, and Kilchoman Sanaig, all of which are WAY less expensive in my market.
    Hope you're feeling better soon!
    Cheers John 🥃

I've just tripped over your channel and immediately subscribed. I totally agree with you that Lagavulin has begun to live on its reputation probably in part due to their association with Diageo. I don't know any other such highly regarded whisky that has been allowed to get away with 43%, chill filtration and the addition of colourant and yet retain its position towards the top of the tree. As you said it's perfectly nice but there is now better out there not yet cottoned on to by social media and its dreaded "influencers". I don't however agree with you regarding Sanaig as I find it a tad dilute. As if you poured it into a glass over ice and then returned it to the bottle. Regarding your comment about price hikes Lagavulin is nothing compared to what the retailers having been doing with Springbank over the last 18 months or so and anyone who pays the extortionate markups on certain brands they clearly have more money than sense especially when you take account of the opposition beginning to appear. I know you have had issues with Masters of Malt but I find some of their "&" offerings now extremely agreeable, the only problem being that you are unlikely to be able to buy the exact same bottle twice due to supply. Finally, don't throw the LagXVI out with the baby. Bear in mind you weren't feeling the best while filming this and palates change over time and from day to day, especially if you've been "on the sick". Anyway, great channel, looking forward to the next video, but really, get some lights if you're filming indoors ;-)

Tried the 8yo for the first time.....I wont bother with the 16 anymore....price, chill filtration, 43%. It just seems like a neutered whisky to me. In all reality even the 8yo is too expensive for what it is. Theres a bit of piss taking going on by Diageo. SPOILER RECOMMENDATION-Try the Tomatin NAS Cask Strength. In New Zealand its roughly $15-$20 cheaper than the 8yo Lag. Probably be a good one for a review. Never seems to get any publicity & its a beauty. Thanks for the great reviews John. Cheers Pete NZ.

I second the Tomatin CS recommendation! Especially if a bottle of particular 2019 batch comes in sight. My bottle had "21 03 19" printed on the glass. I've had a bottle from 2021 too, still very nice, but the 2019 one was on another level. Thick, funky, farmy, sherried (not a sherry bomb though) and with added water it turned almost opaque in the glass.

I love ardbeg 10, talisker 10 and Laphroaig 10. I bought a bottle of lag 10 for the first time last year. Its not for me. Shame as i had high hopes based on reputation.. good review.

Came back to this after a few years spent with newer, more interesting peated whiskies, and found this to be frankly too rough to drink. Thin, bitter and acrid. Hard to tell how much of that is internalised feelings towards diageo I guess.

Your taste buds must be off… I prefer an Ardbeg, but Laga 16 is a good dram.

Controversial opinion can sometimes be controversial! Luckily my opinions carry as much weight as a senile man yelling at a cloud, so my say isn't likely to do any damage! Rebel against my findings and continue to find enjoyment in this one :)
