I like most of the songs, but I could not agree more about "Loser Baby". It might be the best song I heard in years. Edit I like how they frame Husk as Uncle Iroh from Hell
Right? He opens with it being a video/tierlist FOR FUN, and like 15 minutes in I'm like "Rank the first song yet?" then see OVER SIX HOURS OF VIDEO LEFT.
*Out For Love* 50% critiques about how the song doesn't fit with the rest of the show 20% complements about the choreography and music 30% _mommy? sorry. mommy?_
It's a weird read (and kind of a stretch) but what if the detestation Carmilla is talking about is the one Vaggie has againist herself? That's why she keeps fighting the way angels do, she doesn't value herself. That's the point Carmilla is tryng to make: "If you really love her, try keeping yourself alive" Again I'm aware is a stretch taking into account the context...
@@miguelramos6059 Yes, it's exactly that is Carmilla is talking about. Hate is corrosive, and I think the show does a good job of showing this through Vaggie. She hated Lute and Adam because they mutilated her and hated the exorcists because she realized how truly evil their cause was. She was fueled by vengefulness. And as long as Vaggie held onto that, she would never be able to devote her entire mind to Charlie's wellbeing. So when Carmilla tells her to be motivated by love, she lets go of hatred which makes her a proper angel again. This is conveyed visually through her wings coming back. Boom, character development. That division between sating her thirst for revenge and protecting Charlie would make her unable to reach her full potential in either direction, she needed to give up one or the other and as I already said hate makes you weaker. Vaggie needed to drop her personal grievances with Lute and Adam entirely and focus 100% on Charlie.
Hazbin hotel is about 200 min (3 hrs) long in its entirety, you can watch and rewatch hazbin hotel and still have enough time to watch a 35 min analysis video on hazbin hotel. This is truly the pinnacle of what TBskyen is about, and I wouldn't change a thing.❤❤❤
I clicked the link through discord and I thought "I mean it's probably like 2,5 hours, normal Skyen shenanigans"... I audibly yelled when I saw the runtime
Same. I thought that it may be 3 hrs or smth like that when I saw the notification. When I saw it's actually is 6 hrs I was surprised for a moment. But it is a thing TBSkyen would do and well he did XD Not complaining though
1:13:00 Also! Something interesting I noticed about Alastor, the only time he ever sings Harmony is with Rosie! Which I think speaks volumes about the genuine respect he has for her, to let her sing the main melody
Loser, Baby is actually EVEN MORE of a masterpiece than you recognize in the video (for music theory reasons) as it primarily uses blues vocabulary, a musical vocabulary that's easy to pick up, born of working class resentment, which turns a source of pain into one of pleasure. Truly, it's a masterclass in all aspects.
Blues Music initally developed around 1860 on plantations and is a very vocal tradition. The deal with the blues is that it often is expressing something you'd feel blue about, whether it be a broken heart or the every day struggle of living. That singing about it was a way to make it bareable, to help process it, channeling that pain into art and feeling better about it. (The ContraPoints video on The Darkness talks about this phenomena) The Blues is often fairly simple in melody, it often uses what are called pentatonic scales, which are simpler than other scales that exist. If you listen to Loser, Baby, There's only a couple different pitches being sung, and in the choruses and verse, it's in E major Pentatonic. In the Bridge (Neon Signs Section) it shifts to E Minor Pentatonic, and Keith David and Blake Roman often start notes flat and raise them, which is known as a blue note. I have more to say about this particular song (and am actually forming a video essay on it) in terms of music theory, but hopefully this explains it.
the point that husker calling angel a loser snaps him out of his misery is perfect, 'cause that is a real thing that is recommended to help get people out of an emotional loop, mostly for anxiety, but the idea is doing or saying something so unexpected the surprise/confusion breaks through the person. And instead of allowing Angel to fall back into his depressive state, Husker pokes him into annoyance and a more reactive mood and then he finally brings solidarity onto the table, letting him know the ribbing is in good-faith, which now that Angel is not so caught up in his own head gives him the mental space to understand what is being offered.
yeah, specially when you see that Husk singing the "you lose your way, you think your life is wreck...." slow part that sounds like a typical sad song you can see Angel sigh and look even more miserable. Husk is acting like his self-destructive thoughts incarnate.
This! On one hand, Husk is *setting up* the rethoriv of "Oh, no no no, it's not, life's actually good" and so on, and instead doubles down, which is the unexpected part. Angel is *expecting* the same rethoriv he probably heard 1000 times from Charlie and that only makes him feel even more guilty (because in my experience people in a shitty situations often know real well that it *could* be better and blame themselves for not being able to get out). On the other hand, Husk *is* poking at Angel but from under him, or putting himself at his own level. It's not "you suck and I'm better than you", but it's a conciliating, basically inviting "you suck but you're not alone. I understand you and I'm telling you this from a point of being in a similar situation, I'm not saying it from a position of privilege" And Husk manages to invite Angel Dust into the song, initially he's talking to Husk but then he *joins the song*, even when he's *still* being skeptical. *Then* there's the dance and only after that, finally, Angel fully braces the song and harmonises with Husk. I'm so happy Skyen loves this song too episode 4 is the peak of the show IMO and has the two best songs
An interting note about "Poison", is Velvette has posters in the show that are kinda, background storytelling. The love potions being slipped in people's drinks is her brand. She is bottling vals pheromones and selling them. She is very DIRECTLY complicit in this abuse AND IT'S A BACKGROUND DETAIL. Mad.
2:09:39 - Also Camilla clearly looks at Zestial when she says "keep YOU safe" with which she means her daughters of course but not only them but Zestial as well, who looks genuinely surprised to hear that he's elevated to a similar importance as her daughters. I love that part but as you said multiple times, where does it come from? We know both of them for about 5 minutes at that point. It's like the makers of the show were hoping we would be able to look into their heads and see all the amazing stories they wrote and which they didn't get the opportunity to put into the show.
More that I think they wanted to lay groundwork for a future they weren't sure would happen. I think a lot of valid criticisms that TVSkyen laid out were choices that Vivzie might have made because she didn't know if this would be her only shot. I can imagine Vox and Velvette were introduced now because she might not have gotten a season two and wanted to at least capture a small part of them on screen when she had her one chance.
Yeah Carmilla's singing is amazing but her songs all have trouble fitting in with the story. I like Respectless a lot but Skyen is right that that runtime could probably have been utilised better. Whatever it Takes on her side is a powerful balled but we don't know her or her daughters at all so it doesn't really have emotional impact (Vaggie part is musically less enjoyable to me but storywise makes more sense to include). Out for Love is very cool but as Skyen said it is nonsensical. Vaggie has been doing everything for love/Charlie since the beginning.
I think that "Respectless" is a way to give the Vs a W in season one. Vox got dunked on by Alastor, and Angel started fighting against Valentino. So to be a legitimate threat in season two, the Vees had to achieve something.
A detail I like about "loser baby". When we see Angeldust and Husk tied up with that glowing rope. Not only is the whole "shibari" detail funny... But consider their contracts. Angeldust is only "bound" to Valentino in his studio, sure he has to go there, but outside of the studio is he not actually bound to Valentinos will. Therefor his bonds are thiner, sparce, flimsier. Husk on the other hand is firmly tied to Alastors will and can be called and made to do anything he wants at any point and he has no say in the matter. Meaning he is bound completely, and firmly. I love that detail.
I honestly love the passion and on the spot articulation you can put into going on a heartfelt tangent for hours about minute details - you are truly very fun to watch and listen to and I love the energy and devotion you have to what you enjoy.
I think that's why Angel brings the group to a BDSM club for trust building, and that mirrors this scene where there is no trust. Because he knows the difference. Also notice the girl in the Welcome to Heaven song that doesn't fit the color palate, is Molly, Angel's twin sister.
Great point to bring up about the BDSM part, before the song it is explicitly brought up as something built on trust. It *is* at least partially played as a joke and it *is* never really explained, but am attempt was made, at least
@@Patmax17 Just sad because Angel was being super sweet in his own way about showing healthy BDSM folks. But its treated as gross and a joke by the characters. ( Except Husk vibing until Niffty makes it weird )
People commenting about the video length like this is their first rodeo, smhmh. Where were *you* when Skyen ranked the hotness of every League Champion? Really enjoying the video so far.
@@Patmax17 Jesus Christ, I'm new to the channel and I don't even know what those League Champions are, do not *tempt* me to find that video. It's bad enough that I'm multitasking my way through the day with this video, I don't need another.
I'm pretty sure respectless was just Velvette trying to get the older overlords to go into battle with the angels, die, and leave an even bigger power vacuum for her and the Vees to fill and or make room for newer younger overlords that they can either partner up with to become even stronger or manipulate and control them and their medium that they govern
@@Flugel_Halogen neither did Rosie. They could've saved time by not introducing another new character to an already bloated but NOPE. We don't have enough time with Velvette to know that
@rimzaaah5892 what about how Velvette acts makes you think she'd like Charlie? What we saw of her personality in the overlord meeting should've been plenty of evidence to know she wouldn't like Charlie at all. She'd probably bully her before she ever considered being friends with her
44:02 Oh yeah this is one of the issues the show has that I like to call "Information they couldnt put in there due to time but thankfully has been relevant enough in Helluva so ppl who are fans of both know how it works better." In Oops (S2EP6) Stolas stablishes that certain Deals, specially those made with powerful demons, are ever-lastingly binding. Like its really a SHAME that they only had 8 eps bc Helluva does a great job at introducing concepts from Hazbin that were stablished even before Hazbin started production, like, they introduce sinners and how they are stuck in the pride ring for example. Which tells me that Hazbin would have those introductions to these concepts if it wasnt for the time kneecap.
Sort of, Helluva hasn't actually stated outright in the show that sinners can't leave pride - that information mainly comes from the video comment sections where fans share details they've gotten from livestreams and such. It is very strongly implied though, since the hellborn characters are much less diverse in their designs than sinners. After a few crowd shots in different rings it becomes quite obvious that all the characters belong to one group or another with distinct and identifiable group traits.
I clicked because I saw a 6.5 hour video about my current obsession, but I really liked your commentary and perspective. I don’t think I have ever subbed after only watching one video but I honestly can’t wait to hear a lot more from you. Great video!
The way that i saw that you left pentious' redemption in and literally said out loud "ah he just wants to laugh at Sarah again" and then laughed my ass off with you 🤣🤣
My fav is “Stayed Gone” for the animation, the song itself is okay but the animation and visuals with the song in the style of slam poetry. It just amazes me, it’s such a charming and cool scene.
All you need is watch them to understand that Velvette absolutely *is* the backbone of the Vs. Both of the voys are *horribly* insecure and emotional. So she always has to be the sane one there. Plus, the way she picked up on Carmilla's expression, figured out that she's hiding something and decided to start attacking Zestial to get her to out herself? Brilliant. I really love how competent she is.
about the show using (seemingly 70s) rock music for adam's character bc popular music studies is my special interest and i want to infodump: regarding feminist studies in music there is the concept of "cock rock", used for the first time by mcrobbie and frith in 1978 to describe the kind of rock music that is intrinsically connected to the sexual performance of male masculinity. i'll copy-paste the definition made by auslander as found on wikipedia here because it says everything by itself: "[C]ock-rock performance means an explicit, crude, 'masterful' expression of sexuality [...] Cock-rock performers are aggressive, boastful, constantly drawing audience attention to their prowess and control. Their bodies are on display [...] mikes and guitars are phallic symbols (or else caressed like female bodies), the music is loud, rhythmically insistent, built around techniques of arousal and release. Lyrics are assertive and arrogant, but the exact words are less significant than the vocal styles involved, the shrill shouting and screaming." all of this is SO adam and especially can be seen in "hell is forever" when it comes to the vocals and the lyrics. as someone who is into this academic field, adam immediately reminded me of cock rock - personified even, i'd say! i hope we'll see more characters being associated to certain genres, just so i can gush about what it can mean in a meta way, lmao
42:00 gets even funnier because he immediately shows he can also summon a guitar on command and play a guitar solo. So he does an air guitar purely because he can.
Yes. Especially since the Vees are the main villains in seasons 2 apparently. I feel like the flow would have been better if 1&2 had been one long season, with Adam as the overarching A plot and the Vees as the overarching B plot. That way we could have switched between the plots as needed, fill in some of those months we just skipped past and space out the character development a little. Maybe even start the show with a flashback to Vaggies one year anniversary in hell - hiding from the extermination together with Charlie and listening to Charlie reading the history of hell (same as we opened the real season one with but this time scenes from an ongoing extermination at the end).
You and this channel are a treasure. Absolutely elated at your thorough understanding and breakdowns of every character in this series, and how much detail you pick up from the smallest things! I feel like so many reactors miss or gloss over anything that isn't super clearly spelled out, so it's genuinely a joy to see you pull each song and scene apart for every last bit of character and world building you can find. Like I've seen so many reactions to Vox and Stayed Gone that amount to "oh haha funny that the tv man hates the radio man" and here you are picking up on the pathetic bitter ex vibes, the fact that Vox has clearly modeled himself after Alastor in some ways, and their different approaches to controlling people. And maybe it's a low bar to set to be excited about someone paying close attention to subtext when not every reactor is aiming to do a thorough deep dive and character analysis, but as someone who loves that kind of stuff, I just can't help but appreciate when I come across it.
To join you in your venting about "Out for love", Vaggie not only doesn't learn anything from it or changes, but actively does the opposite. Camillas advice boils down to "If you fight for love, you can not afford to make mistakes. Strike quickly and deadly and then get your loved ones to safety", but Vaggie lets Lute live - explicitely out of spite. Not because she thinks Lute can change or because she thinks Charlie wouldn't want Lute to die, but because she wants to antagonize Lute some more. This puts Charlie in danger almost immediately. It's a shame, because the song is such a banger.
I honestly think Vaggie going into the fight not for Charlie but for her own personal vengeance would have been good character development for her. You have to believe in your own worth and that you were WRONGED to seek revenge. ...but that's not a wholesome message 😂
Sera with the fire in her eyes saying "do what was required" is up there as one of my favourite things in the whole show. The show picks a side (middle managing a genocide is evil) and it absolutely slams it's opinion down on the table for you to look at. Super excited for Helluva Boss! Its got a lot of that pilot episode jank but also it gets the chance to breathe.
For Vox to matter - he needed to be in the place of reporters in the pilot, before we've been introduced to Alastor. Cause Alastor just by being in the show before him completely blocks any potential problems Vox can cause for our main cast. A shame, cause personally I absolutely adore Vox and his petty rivalry with Alastor
I feel like being a reporter is kind of beneath Vox's level, though. To me, it'd actually reduce his threat level as a potential villain to see that being the case. Basically the reporters are the ones telling the news to the people, but Vox is supposed to be the guy behind the scenes deciding which stories even make it to the reporters in the first place and how...editorialized those stories even become before they reach the public. The thing that makes Vox's position so insidious is that even if you put aside his potential hypnotizing/mind control powers he seems to have a monopoly on all broadcasting in Hell meaning there isn't a single news source out of his control. Basically imagine the dynamic we have now between extreme right-leaning news outlets like Fox versus extreme left-leaning ones like MSNBC, and then realize that whatever their equivalents in Hell are Vox is the guy controlling exactly what news makes it to BOTH of them. However he wants to control the masses, he can. As a side note, this is also why the Vs being a team is so important and why Alastor calls Vox out on being powerless without them. The Vs all represent control over different types of information channels - Vox controls TV, Velvette controls social media, and Valentino controls street rumors and word-of-mouth. Back to the main point, Vox being the guy actually on the programs airing just seems so...beneath his station. It makes sense for him to do during the Stayed Gone song because he's basically panicking due to Alastor's return posing a threat (since radio is a source of news and information that Vox and the other Vs can't control) and he wants to shut that down ASAP so he appears personally as a kind of "emergency broadcast." But to appear regularly on basic TV programs would make him too...grounded in his station IMO rather than the "mastermind manipulator" he's supposed to be.
'Sorry, I'm singing along, but I have to!' No no, by all means, it's part of why we're here. Your singing adds positively to the experience. Also, I have sung along to the music so much that my daily speech has more swear words where I rarely swore before.
I mean, if ome dosn't feel compelled to sing along these songs they clearly have no soul. Jokes aside, these songs are mostly bangers and so fun to sing, they did a marvellous job
A little detail I love about Lute's part in You Didn't knew that kinda ties with your rant about how....well, sex workers are treated like crap, especially in situations of abuse, was the Orb. During Charlie's song we saw different scenes with Angel Dust on the orb- different perspectives of his "life". The party, irresponsible boy that loves to do binges with his best friend; the doting, protective older brother-esque figure he can be to those he actually gives a shit about- the violent mobster that fixes shit with a gun and doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger, the more on-going, friendly and fun-loving guy- all that stuff- And then, there is Lute's part. The only image we see of him is him curled onto himself, crying, scared, wearing nothing but the rope he had on the studio, and hurt. He is then presented as Val's victim, and it's the only time in the whole song that it's shown, in the part where he is mearcilessly slut shammed by this biggot that wouldn't hesitate to call him a slur. In a courtroom of all places too. All I am saying is that it wouldn't had surprised me if Adam dropped the "Shoulda keept his legs closed aimright" in that very moment.
Something I love about More Than Anything is that when they start to duet Lucifer steps back to sing the backing harmony and lets Charlie take the lead harmony. That is some amazing musical storytelling.
"There are like 15 songs in this series, even if he talks about everything and plays them ... I'm sure he'll be done in an hour." TBSkyen: "Better plan your evening around this watch, buckeroo"
I like the fact that Charlie doesn't say she herself wants to be redeemed. She is excited to visit Heaven and she wants to help others, but she loves being in Hell.
Some insight that I'd like to add to your thoughts on "Loser:" Angel's first sung line is indeed the first time he's expressed genuine joy in that higher register he uses when he's putting on his mask. It's the very first time that he realizes that performance can be _positive_ and _empowering._ He finally at long last has the ability, the capability to be positive, and a use for the skills he's built up during his career. It's also vitally important when you realize his first actual response to Husker is to refer to himself in the most sexual way possible... and Husker says that it's fine by him! Remember that Husker has always always always responded with disgust at Angel being sexual and "fake." A big part of why it turns Angel around is the realization that Husker _validates who Angel is._ Husker offering Angel his hand is also saying, "Hey... I'm actually okay with you touching me. I didn't push you away because of who you are, but how you treated me," which is something Angel also deeply relates to. What really seals their bond is that Angel decides to show Husker the side of himself that loves violence and fighting... And Husker freely offers a compliment. Angel at long last has found someone willing to love him *unconditionally.* Someone he can trust to open up to. The scene when they're returning and Angel's talking to Husker about Valentino-with his mask off, even-tells us, confirms to us the true intimacy they now have together. I could go on and on with more analysis, but instead I'll finish with this: Husker offering Angel his hand is the single most important moment in Hazbin Hotel, and I love it so much.
also something curious about the particular anecdote about Val Angel was telling Husk about when they came to the Hotel: is the same scene we saw in Addict, the musical video that told us Angel's story with Val for the first time, and Viv even confirmed it was a direct reference. The scene he is talking about, of Val with the bills and stuff, it's literal seconds before he gets assaulted by what is apparently the first time. He is pretty much reclaiming one of the most traumatizing things that ever happened to him there
On dusk enjoying singing and dancing (and sex! I'm convinced he *loves* being a porn star), I don't think he's realizing it for the first time, but rather discovering the joy again of dancing and singing. I read Angel as someone who used to have genuine, complete joy in what he does, he did make it a craft he honed to perfection after all. But his relationship with Valentino took all the joy out of it, and made him forget that those things used to bring him joy. Husk doesn't give him a *revelation*, but rather makes him connect back to who he truly is. At least that's my interpretation, and I honestly find it more touching
On Charlie and Vaggie's relationship, since I can speak as a lesbian! I think the criticism of their relationship comes from the fact that lesbian representation is either overly clean or overly fetishizing (to my knowledge) but I don't think that applies in full to Charlie and Vaggie - as you said, there just wasn't enough time to fully develop their relationship, and that includes not enough time to show more casual, romantic affection between the two, which is part of the criticism the More Than Anything Reprise still works because, again as you said, it's VERY romantic, and the nature of their kiss is much the same - it's not a quick peck on the cheek or overly subtle, it's a full on kiss with both of them leaning in towards each other - that implies physical connection along with romantic, that's good also, knowing the internet, if there were more hints of sexual attraction akin to what Angel and other gay/queer men in the show can express, people would probably claim the show is fetishizing lesbians lol
I mean, that's the point of the tier list: to rank the songs on how well they tell the story. Musically, most of them are bangers! It's also something I appreciate a lot of Skyen, his ability to be critical of things he loves, acknowledging their flaws and shortcomings but also their strengths and value, and loving those things. Opinions on Internet are turning more and more polarised, either something is *good* or *bad* (cue Hell is Forever), and Skyen's analyses are *nuanced*, and I think he's very intentionally putting a lot of effort into being *that* kind of voice and reminding people to be critical and go a fe steps deeper into the things that they enjoy. And that seeing the flaws of things you like shouldn't make you feel bad about liking them
41:46 fun fact, in the script alex was just suposed to make guitar noises but he then added 'guitsr solo fuck yeah' becaus he thought the character of Adam would say it.
1:42:32 lingering on the end of Sorry reminded me how Nifty pouted and said “I hated that song!” Which reminded me of how I noticed at the end of Loser Baby the loan sharks also noted how Husk and Angel were singing in the street, and how I tied it back to the origin story we get in episode 1 where it was Lilith’s voice and her songs that really built up Hell and inspired the Sinners, and how intrinsically Adam is built with rock and roll influences, and how Lilith and Adam were the very first humans and how they’re both linked to music, and how Charlie carries on her mom’s legacy by being filled to bursting with songs.
I think there an interesting connection between songs being used by a character to express their true true selves and the denizens of hell usually reacting to them with vitriol. It makes me think that in a scociety where everyone has to keep on a mask at all times, just to feel safe, expression of vulnerability and sincerity are highly frowned upon.
I'll be honest... I laughed when I saw the runtime. I'd be more weirded out if there wasn't a 38-hour vodeo essay about the Beverly Hillbillies that is currently my Everest...
56:31 I just realized something really important in season 2 would probably have to be Emily somehow letting the Hazbin Hotel crew know that Sir Pentious made it to heaven, most likely against Sera’s wishes, and with that new knowledge the Hazbin Hotel would have to get their message out there more than ever, which makes Vox’s tv empire way more important for advertising a certain message
6:09:35 Its not a rumor, Viv, the creator has said that the Vee's are going to be the next seasons big villains. Also we are going to be seeing a lot of character backstories!
Normally I wouldn't watch a 6 hour video but i love these songs and I've been looking for in depth reviews. Also I can listen to this guy drone on and on for hours so it's a win win
45:25 I feel like it was implied that Lucifer respects the agreement because he's afraid of Heaven, or has been broken down by them. Heaven is in a position of greater power and strength, so they have more room to do what they want without fearing retaliation. If Lucifer broke the agreement, they'd probably retaliate far worse than just moving up the extermination, and he's probably not willing to take that chance. Similar to how Carmilla is prioritizing protecting her daughters
3:25:25 I like the Shibari interpretation, but I also think it has to do with how tightly their masters hold the leashes. Angel Dust is able to circumvent Valentino by just staying out of the studio ("I own you, bitch" "Yeah, you do, in the studio...out here, I get to do what I want"). Meanwhile, Alastor words his deals carefully. He's much more cunning than Valentino, much more power-hungry, and thus, his control over Husk is far stronger (hence the tighter rope).
2:50:00 i saw someone online also suggest that the dance sequence is a visual representation of angel's dissociation! whats in his head vs the flashes of reality through the screens/his eyes
Drinking game, take a shot every time Skyen starts the video while it's not a screen. By the end, you'll be just as much of an alcoholic as Husk or Angel Dust!
Something I noticed about Loser Baby is that they made Husker into a marketable plushy. They make his eyes bigger and face softer throughout the song. You can really notice it in the "Baby that's fine by me" line, where he looks like a Gatcha Life thing. 4:25:51 Oh, is this suddenly not a safe space? 4:39:58 4:46:52 I love how much he hates Sera. It's on sight. ( 4:47:14 bonus bit) 6:21:19 Ive seen theories about Lillith possibly being Alastor's benefactor, but not about why. The detail with the sewed mouth is also new to me
Scrambled Eggs is not the first time we find out about the angels being invulnerable/unkillable. We hear about it in Episode 1, at the end with Adam and Lute. “This is the first time they’ve managed to kill one of us.”
Because of their similar designs and them singing "whatever it takes" together, I thought that Vaggie's secret was going to be that she was Carmilla's estranged daughter. I had figured there would eventually it would be revealed that Vaggie was hiding at the hotel partially to keep away from her overbearing mother. Then there would be some conflict between Carmilla's position as an overlord/other interests and her need to protect Vaggie when she finds out she's hiding out at Hazbin Hotel. While her being a fallen angel is also interesting, I think they couldve done a lot with the parallels, esp between Charlies father issues and Vaggies mother issues.
I can't wait for Adam to wake up in hell after his fall. I suspect s2 will tease at his attempts at redemption at the Hazbin before he realizes he loves hell and becomes an overlord.
Carmilla is voiced by Daphne Rubin-Vega, who is most famous for originating the role of Mimi in Rent on Broadway. She and Stephanie Beatriz also played girlfriends in the movie version of In the Heights, which I think is pretty fun. And I agree, Carmilla is the hottest character in the show. Out for Love is so much fun to watch. I really wish she'd been better utilized. Great list!
Charlie using unsure verbiage till the end of 'ready for this' singing "might be" "maybe" "appear to be" "hope that I'm ready", and the only very certain verbs of "we KNOW that we ARE ready" are sang by EVERYONE BUT Charlie is so good and smart and fun and goes right into her speech "we will definitely win.... but in case we dont"..
YES! I also like the line "when Adam brings the battle here I *must appear* like I'm ready for this!" Like, she's really unsure, and she knows that it's a weakness and that as the Princess of Hell she must appear as someone powerful not to be messed with. She tries hard to *appear* positive and confident, there's that scene in the final episode where she goes alone to cry the night before the final battle.
I really appreciate the lengthy analysyes, but the "you didn't know" part definitely hit me the most. It's somewhat relieving to see other people also connecting it to the current events
20:20 Quick correction dude: it was confirmed by the show devs that the Cannibals in Helluva Boss aren't hellborn, they're Sinners. When asked why they all look alike the devs said it was a stylistic choice. All Hellborn Demons are exempt from the extermination, the exorsists are only supposed to go after Sinner Demons. That's why Vaggie got punished for sparing that cannibal, he was a sinner childs soul. If he had been a Hellborn he wouldn't have been in any danger at all, Vaggie would have known its ok to leave him alone and she wouldn't have been punished for sparing him. In the Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss shows, wich share the same setting, humans and sinner demons bleed red, angels and winners bleed gold, and native born demons bleed black. The cannibals in the final episode bleed red, which helps in emphasizing the fact they're human souls in hell.
1:50:00 Velvettes death in the 2010's is what brought modern tech such as touch screens and cellphones to hell. Without her Vox would still have a 1950's style box TV for a head. Vox and Val were, before Velvette showed up, were basically running things the way they were done on earth in their time frames of their deaths. Velvettes reaction to this was "oh fuck no I ain't dealing with this ancient bullshit." The internet, 5ouch screen tablets, phones, and any form of modern tech from the 2000's is in hell because Velvette was able to teach people about it and get it made in hell. Without her Vox wouldn't even know what a wifi signal even is, let alone know to incorporate the wifi signal bars on his outfit. When she says "I'm the backbone of the V's" she means it literally. Without her social media wouldn't exist in hell.
3:25:34 Fun fact about the color gradient overlapping Angel and Husk; the Teal snd Indego are the colors of the Gay/Male Love Male Flag. Also known as the Forest and Water flag to match thr Lesbian Sunset flag of Orange and Pink. Viv has stated by the end of the series Angel and Husk will get together. But to contrast Charlie and Vaggie being together already at the series beginning and their relationship already established, we get to see Husk and Angel go through the steps needed for their relationship to start, but at the series ending.
4:36:11 + 4:38:25 Oh hey Molly, twin sister of Anthony/Angel Dust, can't wait to see you in Season 2. Perhaps as a friend for Sir Pentious to bond with while he acclimates to Heaven.
4:54:32 "But there's a lot that you don't know." Change that 'you' to a 'we'. Sera gives the air of "I need to act like I know what I'm doing, but I'm honestly not sure what I'm doing, and I can't let anyone know this." Angels don't know what gets a soul into heaven, and Sera is working so hard to keep this fact hidden from everyone else. Because if it got out that even the head archangel doesn't know how heaven works, it could cause a mass panic and confusion in heaven thst hell could take advantage of
After watching the whole thing, just wanted to say that, while I don't agree with some things throughout the video, you did an excellent job in presenting your points of view and your personal opinions, and it was enjoyable to watch. Even if it was very long, do know that the video was great. Keep it up!
after I've chewed on it for a second, I think I Really like the idea of alastor being revealed to be an angel. both because I think it's an element of surprise that his character Needs (I think Both his betrayal and almost inevitable redemption are really obvious), AND because of the wider implications it has for the lore. because it'd mean that much like a sinner can be ascend to heaven, angels can still fall
It would be very, very, VERY funny to hit the gates of heaven and be like "wh... a wolf?" and then St. Peter takes off his fursuit head and sends you to Hell
The fact that this is more than double the length of the actual show is both hilarious and absolutely depressing, considering the main problem with the show is it being too short and condensed. Amazing video. I wish they had more time ;_;
To anyone unsure if it's worth your time: It really is! Break it up into chunks, go through it song by song or just listen to it like a podcast to deal with the length (that's what I did), but it is SO worth it. What a wonderful analysis of essentially the whole show. I could listen to this man for hours (I did, in fact). Well done Skyen, thank you very much!
Vaggie did sing in Happy Day in Hell in regards to the angels "They're bloodthirsty and deranged!" But that's easy to miss and hard to remember, so calling it foreshadowing for being fueled by vengeance feels like a stretch.
You think I fuck around?

It's a weird read (and kind of a stretch) but what if the detestation Carmilla is talking about is the one Vaggie has againist herself? That's why she keeps fighting the way angels do, she doesn't value herself. That's the point Carmilla is tryng to make: "If you really love her, try keeping yourself alive"
Again I'm aware is a stretch taking into account the context...
it's ma'am or madam

I tried to look it up on google but I didn't really understand from what I've read- can you talk about more of this?
Blues Music initally developed around 1860 on plantations and is a very vocal tradition. The deal with the blues is that it often is expressing something you'd feel blue about, whether it be a broken heart or the every day struggle of living. That singing about it was a way to make it bareable, to help process it, channeling that pain into art and feeling better about it. (The ContraPoints video on The Darkness talks about this phenomena)
The Blues is often fairly simple in melody, it often uses what are called pentatonic scales, which are simpler than other scales that exist.
@@PumpkinTheFool omg please, gimme this shit! If you put up that video please PLAEASE come back here and put a link to it ❤❤
"This sad little tv twink"
Im fucking dying
the point that husker calling angel a loser snaps him out of his misery is perfect, 'cause that is a real thing that is recommended to help get people out of an emotional loop, mostly for anxiety, but the idea is doing or saying something so unexpected the surprise/confusion breaks through the person.
I understand you and I'm telling you this from a point of being in a similar situation, I'm not saying it from a position of privilege"
And Husk manages to invite Angel Dust into the song, initially he's talking to Husk but then he *joins the song*, even when he's *still* being skeptical.

Mad.
Vox too with the cameras in Angels dressing room ( *edit* Oops it was mentioned in the video I just got to that )
2:09:39 - Also Camilla clearly looks at Zestial when she says "keep YOU safe" with which she means her daughters of course but not only them but Zestial as well, who looks genuinely surprised to hear that he's elevated to a similar importance as her daughters.
In the pilot, in the opening song, we see lucifer in a meeting with carmila and zestial, which i would want to know wtf they were talking about!
I think that "Respectless" is a way to give the Vs a W in season one. Vox got dunked on by Alastor, and Angel started fighting against Valentino. So to be a legitimate threat in season two, the Vees had to achieve something.
Ah, that does make sense, nice interpretation.
“Give the Vs a W” lol that’s great
@@sarah-ro2hd thanks!
Respectless is a banger if only because Velvette is the only being that could manage to say, "I'm that hashtag bitch" and not make it cringe.
I really really hope season 2 gets to do more with Heaven and the characters there. Molly would be really fun to explore as a character.
@@Patmax17 Just sad because Angel was being super sweet in his own way about showing healthy BDSM folks. But its treated as gross and a joke by the characters. ( Except Husk vibing until Niffty makes it weird )

"oh he is gonna be in helluva boss"
oh skyen my sweet baby child, if only you knew
I'm pretty sure respectless was just Velvette trying to get the older overlords to go into battle with the angels, die, and leave an even bigger power vacuum for her and the Vees to fill and or make room for newer younger overlords that they can either partner up with to become even stronger or manipulate and control them and their medium that they govern
So why not have Charlie team up with Velvette instead of Rosie? It's so obvious
@@rimzaaah5892 they've never met, and Velvette probably wouldn't like charlie cause of how nice she is
@@Flugel_Halogen neither did Rosie.
She'd probably bully her before she ever considered being friends with her
I feel like 95% of issues with season 1 can be summed up by "there wasn't enough time."
44:02 Oh yeah this is one of the issues the show has that I like to call "Information they couldnt put in there due to time but thankfully has been relevant enough in Helluva so ppl who are fans of both know how it works better."
In Oops (S2EP6) Stolas stablishes that certain Deals, specially those made with powerful demons, are ever-lastingly binding.
The way that i saw that you left pentious' redemption in and literally said out loud "ah he just wants to laugh at Sarah again" and then laughed my ass off with you 🤣🤣
The “have I had food?” at the end is such a mood lmao😂 glad you got it out of your system dude xd
Jokes on you, I have 6.5hrs of paperwork to do tomorrow and this is exactly the audio I need
Brilliant. I really love how competent she is.
about the show using (seemingly 70s) rock music for adam's character bc popular music studies is my special interest and i want to infodump:
regarding feminist studies in music there is the concept of "cock rock", used for the first time by mcrobbie and frith in 1978 to describe the kind of rock music that is intrinsically connected to the sexual performance of male masculinity. i'll copy-paste the definition made by auslander as found on wikipedia here because it says everything by itself:
"[C]ock-rock performance means an explicit, crude, 'masterful' expression of sexuality [...] Cock-rock performers are aggressive, boastful, constantly drawing audience attention to their prowess and control. Their bodies are on display [...] mikes and guitars are phallic symbols (or else caressed like female bodies), the music is loud, rhythmically insistent, built around techniques of arousal and release. Lyrics are assertive and arrogant, but the exact words are less significant than the vocal styles involved, the shrill shouting and screaming."
all of this is SO adam and especially can be seen in "hell is forever" when it comes to the vocals and the lyrics. as someone who is into this academic field, adam immediately reminded me of cock rock - personified even, i'd say! i hope we'll see more characters being associated to certain genres, just so i can gush about what it can mean in a meta way, lmao
42:00 gets even funnier because he immediately shows he can also summon a guitar on command and play a guitar solo. So he does an air guitar purely because he can.
The whole thing with the Vees really makes me feel like season 1 needed at least 12 episodes but they only got 8.
No, no, preach, Skyen is great at this
To join you in your venting about "Out for love", Vaggie not only doesn't learn anything from it or changes, but actively does the opposite.
Oh yeah, that would have been a good idea.
'Sorry, I'm singing along, but I have to!'
No no, by all means, it's part of why we're here.
The party, irresponsible boy that loves to do binges with his best friend; the doting, protective older brother-esque figure he can be to those he actually gives a shit about- the violent mobster that fixes shit with a gun and doesn't hesitate to pull the trigger, the more on-going, friendly and fun-loving guy- all that stuff-
And then, there is Lute's part.
I'm sure he'll be done in an hour."
TBSkyen: "Better plan your evening around this watch, buckeroo"
Remember that Husker has always always always responded with disgust at Angel being sexual and "fake."
A big part of why it turns Angel around is the realization that Husker _validates who Angel is._ Husker offering Angel his hand is also saying, "Hey...
I could go on and on with more analysis, but instead I'll finish with this:
Husker offering Angel his hand is the single most important moment in Hazbin Hotel, and I love it so much.
also something curious about the particular anecdote about Val Angel was telling Husk about when they came to the Hotel: is the same scene we saw in Addict, the musical video that told us Angel's story with Val for the first time, and Viv even confirmed it was a direct reference.
I think the criticism of their relationship comes from the fact that lesbian representation is either overly clean or overly fetishizing (to my knowledge)
but I don't think that applies in full to Charlie and Vaggie - as you said, there just wasn't enough time to fully develop their relationship, and that includes not enough time to show more casual, romantic affection between the two, which is part of the criticism
the More Than Anything Reprise still works because, again as you said, it's VERY romantic, and the nature of their kiss is much the same - it's not a quick peck on the cheek or overly subtle, it's a full on kiss with both of them leaning in towards each other - that implies physical connection along with romantic, that's good
also, knowing the internet, if there were more hints of sexual attraction akin to what Angel and other gay/queer men in the show can express, people would probably claim the show is fetishizing lesbians lol
I do still think their relationship is, well, bland
but that's a writing issue, not a representation one
A 6 1/2 hours Skyen Hazbin video?? Is it my Birthday already?? (It is. It actually is my Birthday.) I am beyond excited to watch all of this. :D
Happy birthday :)
Joyeux anniversaire
happy birthday!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy birthday!
I love how you talk extensively how a song doesn't fit and has his weaknesses and all, but then can't help yourself but sing along ^^
And that seeing the flaws of things you like shouldn't make you feel bad about liking them
6:07:00 The keyblade is the cat. You can see it in all the intros.
"Alex Brightman will gonna be some minor character"
CLUELESS
Wait until he Looks At This.
"Don't check the run time"
(checks the run time)
Jesus Christ dude..
(I'm gonna watch the whole thing)
Same
41:46 fun fact, in the script alex was just suposed to make guitar noises but he then added 'guitsr solo fuck yeah' becaus he thought the character of Adam would say it.
5:17:13 "....then on the other hand Carmilla is really hot * puts it in S contemplatively * " *HE JUST LIKE ME FR!!!!!!*
Fr. Like, I'm aroace myself, and even I blushed a bit when Carmilla let her hair down.
Oh god, are you *actually* watching that? :0
Saame
It took me 3 sessions to get through this video, but it's worth it 👍🏻 only thought "yep, 6 hours sounds like Skyen"
Skyen, this is ALMOST TWO EPISODES OF CRITROLE. Don't you... idk, don't you have STUFF to do?!?
yes
The ADHD is real xD
Me watching this in one go: I do as well!
This is the stuff he needs to do
56:31 I just realized something really important in season 2 would probably have to be Emily somehow letting the Hazbin Hotel crew know that Sir Pentious made it to heaven, most likely against Sera’s wishes, and with that new knowledge the Hazbin Hotel would have to get their message out there more than ever, which makes Vox’s tv empire way more important for advertising a certain message
6:09:35
Its not a rumor, Viv, the creator has said that the Vee's are going to be the next seasons big villains. Also we are going to be seeing a lot of character backstories!
Normally I wouldn't watch a 6 hour video but i love these songs and I've been looking for in depth reviews. Also I can listen to this guy drone on and on for hours so it's a win win
Did you watch it in the end? How was it? :)
@@Patmax17 yeah i did actually it was very enjoyable for watching while doing stuff like drawing
When Tbskyen say he's gonna rank and review goddamn it he's going to rank and review dont play with him
45:25 I feel like it was implied that Lucifer respects the agreement because he's afraid of Heaven, or has been broken down by them.
2:45:48 That "female" is a robot knock-off of something that is relevant in helluva boss. Not an actual demon/soul, but ai programming.
Really made sure to meet that 10 minute requirement this time, huh?
“Helluva boss is up next” and my hearts starts to sing
Something I noticed about Loser Baby is that they made Husker into a marketable plushy.
They make his eyes bigger and face softer throughout the song. You can really notice it in the "Baby that's fine by me" line, where he looks like a Gatcha Life thing.
4:25:51
Oh, is this suddenly not a safe space?
4:39:58
4:46:52
I love how much he hates Sera. It's on sight. ( 4:47:14 bonus bit)
6:21:19
Ive seen theories about Lillith possibly being Alastor's benefactor, but not about why.
About Alex in HB. Yes yes he is. He's there a lot. And boy is it glorious.
I can't wait for Adam to wake up in hell after his fall. I suspect s2 will tease at his attempts at redemption at the Hazbin before he realizes he loves hell and becomes an overlord.
But he was killed with an angelic weapon
My man is super dead I really dont know why ppl expect him to be in hell when he was murdered with Angelic Weaponry.
End of the line, RIP in pieces
@@gearguts7259 Nah, he'll be back. Being killed by angelic weaponry will just be hand waved away or with a throw away line like "He's Adam."
@@PhosPhryne no need for handwaving when death by angelic weapons has never been explained in the show
Carmilla is voiced by Daphne Rubin-Vega, who is most famous for originating the role of Mimi in Rent on Broadway.
Sad little TV twink 😭😭😭 Bestie please
I really appreciate the lengthy analysyes, but the "you didn't know" part definitely hit me the most. It's somewhat relieving to see other people also connecting it to the current events
Told myself I would watch 1 more video before bed, and clicked this without checking the runtime
RIP
I FUCKING LOVE SUCH IN-DEPTH ANALYSES OF THINGS I'M INTERESTED IN!!! YOU'RE SERIOUSLY A LEGEND FOR DOING IT.
20:20
Quick correction dude: it was confirmed by the show devs that the Cannibals in Helluva Boss aren't hellborn, they're Sinners.

Velvettes death in the 2010's is what brought modern tech such as touch screens and cellphones to hell. Without her Vox would still have a 1950's style box TV for a head.
Vox and Val were, before Velvette showed up, were basically running things the way they were done on earth in their time frames of their deaths. Velvettes reaction to this was "oh fuck no I ain't dealing with this ancient bullshit."
The internet, 5ouch screen tablets, phones, and any form of modern tech from the 2000's is in hell because Velvette was able to teach people about it and get it made in hell.
Without her Vox wouldn't even know what a wifi signal even is, let alone know to incorporate the wifi signal bars on his outfit.
When she says "I'm the backbone of the V's" she means it literally. Without her social media wouldn't exist in hell.
3:25:34
Fun fact about the color gradient overlapping Angel and Husk; the Teal snd Indego are the colors of the Gay/Male Love Male Flag.
4:36:11 + 4:38:25
Oh hey Molly, twin sister of Anthony/Angel Dust, can't wait to see you in Season 2. Perhaps as a friend for Sir Pentious to bond with while he acclimates to Heaven.
4:54:32
"But there's a lot that you don't know."
Change that 'you' to a 'we'. Sera gives the air of "I need to act like I know what I'm doing, but I'm honestly not sure what I'm doing, and I can't let anyone know this."
Angels don't know what gets a soul into heaven, and Sera is working so hard to keep this fact hidden from everyone else. Because if it got out that even the head archangel doesn't know how heaven works, it could cause a mass panic and confusion in heaven thst hell could take advantage of
Oh alex brightman is in helluva boss alright…
After watching the whole thing, just wanted to say that, while I don't agree with some things throughout the video, you did an excellent job in presenting your points of view and your personal opinions, and it was enjoyable to watch. Even if it was very long, do know that the video was great. Keep it up!
Am I really about to watch 6.5 hours of T B Skyen just talking about Hazbin Hotel’s music?
Yes. Yes I am.
after I've chewed on it for a second, I think I Really like the idea of alastor being revealed to be an angel. both because I think it's an element of surprise that his character Needs (I think Both his betrayal and almost inevitable redemption are really obvious), AND because of the wider implications it has for the lore.
because it'd mean that much like a sinner can be ascend to heaven, angels can still fall
Alistor vs Adam is what happens when you try to play chess with a raging bull. temperament dosnt realy matter when the other guy is twice your size
4:35:18 as a furry artist I agree, it is stated in the Bible that all furries and only them will go to heaven because we have no vice.
It would be very, very, VERY funny to hit the gates of heaven and be like "wh... a wolf?" and then St. Peter takes off his fursuit head and sends you to Hell
your singing is genuinely so good dude
The fact that this is more than double the length of the actual show is both hilarious and absolutely depressing, considering the main problem with the show is it being too short and condensed.
Amazing video. I wish they had more time ;_;
As a music critic I agree with everything except for stayed gone being that low I think this list is fucking perfect.
Oh my god I'm FINALLY cleaning my room while this video runs in the background and am having a great time, this is just what I needed 😭🙏
"Except that's not what we're doing."
(glances at run time) Skyen buddy are you okay 🤣
I love Skyen videos because he really pay attention to every detail that other commentators hardly to find and that is very fascinating.
Skyen struggling not to go "Mommy?" At carmilla is exactly what I expected, and I'm glad to see it.
I just wish her song made sense
To anyone unsure if it's worth your time: It really is! Break it up into chunks, go through it song by song or just listen to it like a podcast to deal with the length (that's what I did), but it is SO worth it.
What a wonderful analysis of essentially the whole show. I could listen to this man for hours (I did, in fact). Well done Skyen, thank you very much!
I need all the time stamps of Skyen’s singing oh my god
The fact that thia video is longer than the show itself is a whole another level of irony only Skyen could pull off.
3:15:09 "Am i the only one that thinks Skyen's vocal delivery of the lyric 'but letting walls down, it can somethimes set you straight' was amazing?"
This video is great but OH MY GOD YOUR SINGING VOICE IS SO AMAZING
Vaggie did sing in Happy Day in Hell in regards to the angels "They're bloodthirsty and deranged!" But that's easy to miss and hard to remember, so calling it foreshadowing for being fueled by vengeance feels like a stretch.
