    I was agnostic when I came across The Back to Eden film. Paul introduced me to God and scripture through his film and videos on UA-cam, and I became hooked on gardening. It’s been a bit over five years since then and I was recently baptized. My garden is my favorite spot to meet with the Creator and talk with Him. Thank you Paul for changing my life. You are so loved.❤️

    Thank you for this . God told me get prepared 5 years ago, for one year I thought safty as I was a OTR trucker and many of us get killed out there, so I got home and truck prepared to protect myself…he kept urging me, I told daughter and she flippantly said just watch UTube lol so I did, watched homesteaders growing, canning, raising…I asked God is this what you mean? He said yes get prepared, so I started getting raised beds, building a coop, getting green house and grow tunnel ( since truck driver it got delivered and kids piled it in my shed) last December god woke me up and told me get home and get prepared now! I told him, I don’t have everything I still need more stuff, home not paid off..he said NO get home now and start ..so I did. My home was paid off in January god did that for me . When you follow God keep all your faith in him, do what he tells you, and you will live abundantly, doesn’t mean you will have all your wants and gimies, but will have all you need. The Lord is our savior with no relationship with him you cannot get into the kingdom, search out that relationship he loves all, he invites all but those without the relationship will not be allowed. God is good always,anything else is not of God.

    I have been gardening for 8 years (since 2014) and I am so grateful that my introduction to gardening methods was the back to Eden method. I cut my teeth on heavy mulching with wood chips! I had a huge space that I wanted to plant a garden in on Georgia red clay. Tilling would have been a back breaking joke! I am soooo grateful that not only is out garden beautiful, drought resistant and productive, but nutrient dense and Independent of chemical fertility! Thanks so much Paul! My kids are growing up with God's system being the norm for food growth.

      Does it have to be chips? Fresh or composted?

    • @darthvader5300

      I can remember in our village in Kazan, Russia that they have primitive but very safe equipment that can turn wood into wood chips and the elders said it is better that way because it has the right sizes and shapes to create AIR SPACES between them so that water and air can go through into them to moisten and aerate it and given enough time the bottom layer in contact with the soil has started to turn into humus until all of it will become a thick layer of humus. But this requires that you add a fresh layer of wood chips over the first layer periodically so as to maintain an airy wood chips layer to protect the older wood chips which is turning into humus in various stages. But in the 1980s we started mixing the wood chips with water containing dissolved rock dust powder to saturation point level so as to accelerate the fermentation process to turn the airy wet wood chips layer into a a very fertile humus. More than that, Jean Pain has pointed out that the humus also synthetizes water for any crops planted right through it.

    Mulched wood chips... not freshly chipped wood chips -- HUGE difference... this is what confuses people. Also, most people who get inspired by this start their garden in the spring.... I remind them that the best way to start their back to eden garden is to start in the FALL, with the cardboard and deep woodchips (best with 10 inches of MULCHED wood chips, topped by 3-5 inches of freshly chipped wood chips and allowed to sit ALL WINTER. the garden will be ready to plant in by that following spring. People expect INSTANT results and do not realize that it takes TIME to establish the soil and every year the garden will grow in more abundance year after year.
    NOTE he says, he SIFTS the woodchips from his Chicken yard!!! that fine stuff is MULCHED woodchips!

      Yes. 👍🌱 Yard/garden waste, chicken poop & wood chips all composting together. It takes plenty of time.

      How I did my garden to start with: cardboard, potting soil (mushroom compost and topsoil), and then woodchips on top of that to cover.
      I have an old pile of woodchips I haven't finished using yet and I could sift them now because they've broken down enough to produce soil. It just takes a bit of time to get there. But you can top-dress with compost, or just scrape aside the chips to get to the soil underneath if you don't have room to let a woodchip pile decompose so you can sift it. All of it works, it just depends on what you have access to and how much work you can put in.

    • @lauraburruss2217
      @lauraburruss2217 2 роки тому +3

      Yes fresh wood chips kill stuff. Old dry is great to grow in. I put both in my compost pile along with wood ash.

    • @enzoselva888
      @enzoselva888 2 роки тому +4

      Excuse my slowness. So, "Mulched" wood chips means aged wood chips with manure, and some age on them over winter to break them down?

    • @nikkisigmon8090
      @nikkisigmon8090 2 роки тому +3

      @@enzoselva888 Yes, you'll want older woodchips. Even letting them sit a year would be fine. The issue is that there is such a high ratio of carbon in fresh woodchips that to break down, the carbon pulls nitrogen from the soil. This can cause a temporary issue with not enough nitrogen.
      But if you use older woodchips, it won't pull nearly as much nitrogen to cause a deficiency. If you mix in fresh woodchips with chicken manure, that greatly increase the nitrogen availability and keeps it from pulling form the soil. You don't want to plant in fresh chicken manure though because it's too "hot" (too high in nutrients and will burn/damage plant roots). Letting it sit for a bit allows the breakdown of the material, making it great to add to the garden.

    I think it is important to note that the term woodchip in many people’s mind refers to the trunk and branches but the term used in back to eden refers to the whole plant, branches as well as leaves. This is probably why nitrogen is in balance with the other elements in the soil. If using just the hard wood chips there may be a problem wit balance.

    I learned about the back to Eden method earlier this year. My husband was struggling to let go of conventional methods like tilling the soil. After many conversations (😉 some loving arguments) I gave in and said, "fine, till the soil." Well, he went out to till and got about 1/4 th of our garden tilled when the tiller just overheated and died. Perhaps that was the Lord speaking? My husband hasn't bought a new tiller yet. We got a free delivery of wood chips last week 🙌. So glad I heard to sift the chips before using them. 🌿🍂🌱❤
    Thank you for this interview 👍😊.

    🙏❤️🙏
    We live in NC with tons of red clay. When we purchased our property 9 years ago, the garden was a giant brick! The previous owner had completely stripped the earth, used 10-10-10 & did not add ANY organic material. I found (God led me to) Paul's method & it made so much sense!! My husband thought I was nuts bc I wanted to add woodchips to the space but he has seen the light. At first, it was just woodchips laying on a brick. 6 months later, we had huge worms & the beginnings of topsoil. Today, I planted several things for our summer garden. I dug down 6-7 inches, through beautiful black organic earth, before I got to moist clay!!
    At the end of growing season to early spring planting, we allow our chickens into the garden space. They break down the summer plants, eat bugs & fertilize. No fertilizer shortage here. We continuously add leaves, woodchips & grass clippings.
    So with alot of patience & time, our garden is lush & abundant. Yes, the weeds love it too. Bermuda grass is my nemesis! But the weeds are easier to pull. Plus, I have been teaching myself about our edible "weeds" & learning how to work with them, not against them. God has blessed us with numerous medicinal plants.
    THANK YOU SO MUCH PAUL!!! ❤️ Your insight has made a huge impact on our garden & you are a blessing to our lives.
    P.S. I even prune my fruit trees to grow down to me, not up away from me. No ladders at harvest time.

    Thank you so much for this interview! I found that the best way to describe the Back to Eden method to people is to call the covering 'chipper waste' rather than 'wood chips',because it's not the wood chips that come in big plastic bags at Home Depot that Paul has been using. He said so many times in his videos to make friends with someone that has a tree business with a chipper machine. That's exactly what I did, Emmanuel was on the street with his crew on a job, I handed him 50 bucks and asked him if he would dump it on my driveway. Sifted enough through the hardware cloth for the annual beds, The Perennial beds got the the larger stuff. And so many of my neighbors were able to do the same thing! Yay!

    Last autumn I tossed the fallen leaves and branches into a vacant bed and let it over winter. In spring the natural insects, weather and the process of decay had broken it down so very little had to be discarded. Under the branches was 2 cubic yards of fine mulch, richer and more fragrant than any store bought version. That bed now holds loads of green tomatoes ready to ripen. None of my other beds are as fast growing or producing, though they all contain the same compost, manure and mulch on top. Fertilizing is the same too. Can't ignore results like that!

    I have always wanted to have good size garden but the homes I live in kinda had small yards or extremely bad soil.
    the home I live in today has a 1/4 acre and very good sandy soil .
    Even though the soil is good I wanted it to be even better!
    After looking at the Back to Eden videos I decided that I didn't want to wait two or three years for the
    Wood chip to break down. I went and got steer manure, and mushroom compost bags.. I have chickens so I got manure from them and I mixed all of them together. I place that Mixture before putting wood chips on top...
    My garden is very new but it is producing Amazing!!
    thank you guys for putting out these videos...
    I ask God to bless my garden always!

    That documentary changed the direction of my life. I wasn't gardening or growing things but after I watched it I decided to start. That was almost 8 years ago and now I've got a big garden, fruit trees, and berry bushes. It totally flipped me around. Thank you Paul!

      Im at that starting point now, after seeing these videos. When you planted fruit trees you just put wood chip or did you compost or aged manure at the bottom? And how did you get hold of your chips? So happy to hear about your success.

      @@hollywood7702 hey, thanks for the comment. I don't put anything at the bottom of the hole per the teaching of Stefan Sebcowiak. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and then add all fertility on top. You can add fresh woodchips on top of the ground for trees.

    I started a food forest about the time Paul Gautschi’s documentary came out. The only bad mulch I ever put down was Cedar dropped off by the County. The trees and plants didn’t die, but got sick. Upon discovery I pulled the mulch to the walkways and brought in the shed bedding cleanings from our goats. All is very well now several years later. I am learning to no till garden with part of the annual beds. We have a tractor and tiller so it seems more convenient to add lots of compost and till. It however is not convenient to remove rocks, weed, weed again, and still deal with poor compacted soil. Maybe the fall garden will go in no till.

    I have many oaks, Falling dead branches is a weekly cleanup. I have been making about 8 piles around my yard of all the branches for years. I stack them up, and they decay down on there own. The soil under them is top notch, and I have enough to run a small green house indefinitely.
