I have "come to believe" more in the 36:46 minutes than all the many hours of gardening videos I have watched. Thank you Homesteading Family for this video. I have watched many of Paul's videos and have loved them all, but this one is short and like Paul's fruits :OH SO SWEET: Thank you.
Watching the Back to Eden documentary completely changed my life. I went from depressed with little purpose or direction to totally driven to dive head first into growing food and awakening to God's goodness in the design. Paul, thank you for heading the call to spread God's message.
I have been gardening for 8 years (since 2014) and I am so grateful that my introduction to gardening methods was the back to Eden method. I cut my teeth on heavy mulching with wood chips! I had a huge space that I wanted to plant a garden in on Georgia red clay. Tilling would have been a back breaking joke! I am soooo grateful that not only is out garden beautiful, drought resistant and productive, but nutrient dense and Independent of chemical fertility! Thanks so much Paul! My kids are growing up with God's system being the norm for food growth.
I can remember in our village in Kazan, Russia that they have primitive but very safe equipment that can turn wood into wood chips and the elders said it is better that way because it has the right sizes and shapes to create AIR SPACES between them so that water and air can go through into them to moisten and aerate it and given enough time the bottom layer in contact with the soil has started to turn into humus until all of it will become a thick layer of humus. But this requires that you add a fresh layer of wood chips over the first layer periodically so as to maintain an airy wood chips layer to protect the older wood chips which is turning into humus in various stages. But in the 1980s we started mixing the wood chips with water containing dissolved rock dust powder to saturation point level so as to accelerate the fermentation process to turn the airy wet wood chips layer into a a very fertile humus. More than that, Jean Pain has pointed out that the humus also synthetizes water for any crops planted right through it.
This is probably my favorite homesteading family video. It is good for my soul to hear two godly men speak wisdom and quote scripture and glorify God. Thank you so much!
Mulched wood chips... not freshly chipped wood chips -- HUGE difference... this is what confuses people. Also, most people who get inspired by this start their garden in the spring.... I remind them that the best way to start their back to eden garden is to start in the FALL, with the cardboard and deep woodchips (best with 10 inches of MULCHED wood chips, topped by 3-5 inches of freshly chipped wood chips and allowed to sit ALL WINTER. the garden will be ready to plant in by that following spring. People expect INSTANT results and do not realize that it takes TIME to establish the soil and every year the garden will grow in more abundance year after year. NOTE he says, he SIFTS the woodchips from his Chicken yard!!! that fine stuff is MULCHED woodchips!
How I did my garden to start with: cardboard, potting soil (mushroom compost and topsoil), and then woodchips on top of that to cover. I have an old pile of woodchips I haven't finished using yet and I could sift them now because they've broken down enough to produce soil. It just takes a bit of time to get there. But you can top-dress with compost, or just scrape aside the chips to get to the soil underneath if you don't have room to let a woodchip pile decompose so you can sift it. All of it works, it just depends on what you have access to and how much work you can put in.
@@enzoselva888 Yes, you'll want older woodchips. Even letting them sit a year would be fine. The issue is that there is such a high ratio of carbon in fresh woodchips that to break down, the carbon pulls nitrogen from the soil. This can cause a temporary issue with not enough nitrogen. But if you use older woodchips, it won't pull nearly as much nitrogen to cause a deficiency. If you mix in fresh woodchips with chicken manure, that greatly increase the nitrogen availability and keeps it from pulling form the soil. You don't want to plant in fresh chicken manure though because it's too "hot" (too high in nutrients and will burn/damage plant roots). Letting it sit for a bit allows the breakdown of the material, making it great to add to the garden.
Great interview! ❤️🌱🌞Our fellowship listened to Paul’s BTE documentary and implemented it right after the credits rolled in 2011-12. Thank you for bringing this update of Paul. This method has been amazing. We have wet Springs and heavy clay. With chips the worms createa soil structure and loosen clay by maintaining moisture. Also allows no til which gets us in the garden so early. Love this story everytime I hear Thank you so much.
I was blessed to have a load of whole tree wood chips given to me. The Father in Heaven has blessed me so much. He is the greatest provider when we put our faith and love to him first. Paul is a gift to gardeners. I used to till and weed and stopped that nonsense years ago. So many "experts" out there still teaching difficult gardening methods when there's a much easier way.

Yeah! I just planted 6 fruit trees. Last minute I felt led to run over to my woods on my property and grab lush handfuls of under growth to place around their base. I will add more when I get home. Love you both so much. Hugs to you and your families.... From Northern Minnesota.... 🙋🏼♀️🌼
I think it is important to note that the term woodchip in many people’s mind refers to the trunk and branches but the term used in back to eden refers to the whole plant, branches as well as leaves. This is probably why nitrogen is in balance with the other elements in the soil. If using just the hard wood chips there may be a problem wit balance.
With the gross UNmulched Woid Chips I've noticed: _ they never biodegrade (as does true mulch ) _ Earwigs proliferate in that medium ! _ commercial biz DYES the large crude wood chips Red, Green, Black + Brown to further DEnature that "Product"
@@sheilamalone227 that is also a big concern for us as we garden our back yard which is right next to our house. I would love to hear an answer on this question... ty
I learned about the back to Eden method earlier this year. My husband was struggling to let go of conventional methods like tilling the soil. After many conversations (😉 some loving arguments) I gave in and said, "fine, till the soil." Well, he went out to till and got about 1/4 th of our garden tilled when the tiller just overheated and died. Perhaps that was the Lord speaking? My husband hasn't bought a new tiller yet. We got a free delivery of wood chips last week 🙌. So glad I heard to sift the chips before using them. 🌿🍂🌱❤ Thank you for this interview 👍😊. And Jesus come quickly ❤

Hi Paul lovely to see you again. I think of you often. It is true what you told me. It gets better every year. I had to buy another freezer this year. Gods abundance. Love and Blessings from Invercargill Southland New Zealand. Thank you for the interview.
I love listening to Paul. His testimony about just listening to God. God making our burden lighter. God is so good! 🙏❤️🙏 We live in NC with tons of red clay. When we purchased our property 9 years ago, the garden was a giant brick! The previous owner had completely stripped the earth, used 10-10-10 & did not add ANY organic material. I found (God led me to) Paul's method & it made so much sense!! My husband thought I was nuts bc I wanted to add woodchips to the space but he has seen the light. At first, it was just woodchips laying on a brick. 6 months later, we had huge worms & the beginnings of topsoil. Today, I planted several things for our summer garden. I dug down 6-7 inches, through beautiful black organic earth, before I got to moist clay!! At the end of growing season to early spring planting, we allow our chickens into the garden space. They break down the summer plants, eat bugs & fertilize. No fertilizer shortage here. We continuously add leaves, woodchips & grass clippings. So with alot of patience & time, our garden is lush & abundant. Yes, the weeds love it too. Bermuda grass is my nemesis! But the weeds are easier to pull. Plus, I have been teaching myself about our edible "weeds" & learning how to work with them, not against them. God has blessed us with numerous medicinal plants. THANK YOU SO MUCH PAUL!!! ❤️ Your insight has made a huge impact on our garden & you are a blessing to our lives. P.S. I even prune my fruit trees to grow down to me, not up away from me. No ladders at harvest time.
I had the privilege of going to Paul’s property about four years ago and experiencing the Lord firsthand with Paul. What an amazing soul he has God is good
I just love Paul. He lights up when he speaks of these truths God revealed to him. I saw the film right after it came out and it changed my gardening methods.
I'm glad to see Paul looks like he's doing pretty good. I know his physical health has not been the best because of his exposure to Agent Orange and the damage that did to his nervous system. I think if it ever gets to the point he can't walk, he'll figure out a way to garden from an electric wheelchair.
You will experience the same wonderful process of Discovery of God's intricate Wisdom, as You learn how your Body functions to maintain Homeo Stasis / Rx HEALTH, ad You did in learning how Nature Sustains LIFE on Earth. PEACE
How beautiful that he gives all glory to God. And when talking about fertilizing he asked "when does God do it?". Took me a second to realize and then all I could say was wow. Like he says, in the fall the leaves fall then over winter as it breaks down and it snows and rains its like a compost tea, getting everything ready for the spring.
Thank you so much for sharing this. God bless you and you Josh for making it possible for us to watch. I am going to try this. I have had the worst garden for 4 years. Thank you for opening my eyes. Come learn of me , My yoke is easy my burden is light! Faith!
Thank you so much for this interview! I found that the best way to describe the Back to Eden method to people is to call the covering 'chipper waste' rather than 'wood chips',because it's not the wood chips that come in big plastic bags at Home Depot that Paul has been using. He said so many times in his videos to make friends with someone that has a tree business with a chipper machine. That's exactly what I did, Emmanuel was on the street with his crew on a job, I handed him 50 bucks and asked him if he would dump it on my driveway. Sifted enough through the hardware cloth for the annual beds, The Perennial beds got the the larger stuff. And so many of my neighbors were able to do the same thing! Yay!
Wow, so much great information! Praise the Lord for giving it to us through Paul! One thing i realized listening to yall talk is i should ask God whenever i have a question instead of searching on the internet etc.
Just listening to you both speaking about the simplicity of this God (Jesus Christ) Concept (back to Eden garden) inspires me to worship God, for his greatness and wisdom. It really has confirmed what he told me, when I found the soil so rocky and hard to even make a tiny hole. Through His Holy Spirit, He said use wood shavings, Chips and told me exactly what type of animals to get as well. Our God is wonderful, He is our Creator and Creator of all Things, He is just so wonderful, wonderful wonderfull and marvelous and beautiful with His Creation. There is no other God like Him, Its just Him and He is real the same infinite and Eternal God. Halleluya!
💜 John 15:7-8 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. YES TO ESTHER 💜
Last autumn I tossed the fallen leaves and branches into a vacant bed and let it over winter. In spring the natural insects, weather and the process of decay had broken it down so very little had to be discarded. Under the branches was 2 cubic yards of fine mulch, richer and more fragrant than any store bought version. That bed now holds loads of green tomatoes ready to ripen. None of my other beds are as fast growing or producing, though they all contain the same compost, manure and mulch on top. Fertilizing is the same too. Can't ignore results like that!
Great video! I love the natural approach. This combined with my ollas for irrigation has helped me go on vacation for days, up to a week and not worry about my garden. Keep up the great work 0w0
That was awesome❣️Praise the Lord for humble souls that are willing to share God’s simple methods. 🙌🏼 Thank you so much for doing this interview and yes indeed it was an honor. May the Lord continue to guide and bless you and your family. 🙏🏽 Your sister in Christ, Shirley from PA.
I so enjoyed taking a tour with Paul at his garden three years ago! So inspiring and informative. We've implemented the gardening method and so love the relationship God wants with us - communication and fellowship. No better place for that than the garden!
I watched it after my brother recommended it. We have implemented this method, love it and have helped others to start their own gardens with this method as well. We LOVE the back to Eden method!
I have always wanted to have good size garden but the homes I live in kinda had small yards or extremely bad soil. the home I live in today has a 1/4 acre and very good sandy soil . Even though the soil is good I wanted it to be even better! After looking at the Back to Eden videos I decided that I didn't want to wait two or three years for the Wood chip to break down. I went and got steer manure, and mushroom compost bags.. I have chickens so I got manure from them and I mixed all of them together. I place that Mixture before putting wood chips on top... My garden is very new but it is producing Amazing!! thank you guys for putting out these videos... I ask God to bless my garden always!
That documentary changed the direction of my life. I wasn't gardening or growing things but after I watched it I decided to start. That was almost 8 years ago and now I've got a big garden, fruit trees, and berry bushes. It totally flipped me around. Thank you Paul!
Im at that starting point now, after seeing these videos. When you planted fruit trees you just put wood chip or did you compost or aged manure at the bottom? And how did you get hold of your chips? So happy to hear about your success.
@@hollywood7702 hey, thanks for the comment. I don't put anything at the bottom of the hole per the teaching of Stefan Sebcowiak. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and then add all fertility on top. You can add fresh woodchips on top of the ground for trees.
I’ve been doing back to Eden for years but only watched the film last night! Amazing to see where it came from, can’t believe I hadn’t come across this amazing man before ❤
I started a food forest about the time Paul Gautschi’s documentary came out. The only bad mulch I ever put down was Cedar dropped off by the County. The trees and plants didn’t die, but got sick. Upon discovery I pulled the mulch to the walkways and brought in the shed bedding cleanings from our goats. All is very well now several years later. I am learning to no till garden with part of the annual beds. We have a tractor and tiller so it seems more convenient to add lots of compost and till. It however is not convenient to remove rocks, weed, weed again, and still deal with poor compacted soil. Maybe the fall garden will go in no till.
I have many oaks, Falling dead branches is a weekly cleanup. I have been making about 8 piles around my yard of all the branches for years. I stack them up, and they decay down on there own. The soil under them is top notch, and I have enough to run a small green house indefinitely.
Like Jesus said, " you want to know heavenly things and you dont understand earthly things". So true. We think we know so much, yet we make simple things difficult.
Wow! This is awesome!!! My mine is swirling with new ideas for my farm! I watc6h the Back to Eden movie years ago and have been working towards it since...this was just the perfect timing for me to take another step towards fully achieving the end result of where I need to b. Thank you!!

This is probably why nitrogen is in balance with the other elements in the soil. If using just the hard wood chips there may be a problem wit balance.
Yes! Needles leaves and twigs!
With the gross UNmulched Woid Chips
I've noticed:
_ they never biodegrade (as does true mulch )
_ Earwigs proliferate in that medium !
_ commercial biz DYES the large crude wood chips Red, Green, Black + Brown
to further DEnature that "Product"
I have to ask a question. We have termites in our area. If I put wood chips in my garden, will the termite follow?
@@sheilamalone227 that is also a big concern for us as we garden our back yard which is right next to our house. I would love to hear an answer on this question... ty
Amen !! Yes, give God the glory !!! Love this !!!
Over the years I have loved watching his videos. What a blessing he is!
Thank you for this interview 👍😊.
And Jesus come quickly ❤

Hold on to your crown; it's going to be a wild ride!
he sifts stuff from his chicken pens not in the main orchard section. watch some tours paul did
Amazing how God blesses you and allows you to bless others, we have just started to research and learn the back to Eden method and hope to imply it soon. Thanks for sharing your wisdom in this form of gardening. Many blessings from our homestead in Mississippi
When God's Hand is on you! 🙌💗💐💗🙌 Showing up and showing out! Bless God!
Thank you for sharing God’s message through gardening. I love your boldness to share the message of salvation!
Hi Paul lovely to see you again. I think of you often. It is true what you told me. It gets better every year. I had to buy another freezer this year. Gods abundance. Love and Blessings from Invercargill Southland New Zealand. Thank you for the interview.
THANK you for reminding us of Gods provision, mercy and blessings! Better than a Sunday morning ;) God is good
I love listening to Paul. His testimony about just listening to God. God making our burden lighter. God is so good!
🙏❤️🙏
We live in NC with tons of red clay.
What an amazing soul he has God is good
That was part of my plan when I went to Vancouver the next time.
He does not do tours anymore so I guess I have missed his tour from my bucket list.
@@janew5351After watching his videos now I want to go.
Paul is an amazing man of the Lord. I’m lucky enough to know him and his wife and he has helped me a few times with advice for my garden.

THANK YOU FOR WISDOM IN GARDENING!! GOD BLESS YOU PAUL !!!
Yay!
Wow what a life changing video. God is so good and life can be so simple when we don't try to complicate things. I can't wait to try this method.
Halleluya!
Paul is awesome. Watched any videos I could find with him previously, but haven't seen anything new in quite a long time. This was a great video!
God is good always. So excited for this training video. Thank you Paul for sharing your knowledge.😊

Haven’t heard him in quite awhile. Nice to see he’s still around. Love his knowledge. Thanks for having him.
THANK YOU JOSH FOR A VERY EDUCATIONAL INTERVIEW WITH PAUL AND SHARING IT WITH THE PEOPLE!!! LOVED THE KNOWLEDGE FROM THIS!!! GOD BLESS YOU SIR!!!
I agree! Josh did a great job of clarifying and demystifying B2E lore! 🕊💞
I love this practical application of the Bible & God's principles!
I enjoyed hearing Josh talk about Jesus. I’ve been watching your videos for awhile now and it’s great to hear.
I love this man’s faith and enthusiasm for God ❤
Last autumn I tossed the fallen leaves and branches into a vacant bed and let it over winter. In spring the natural insects, weather and the process of decay had broken it down so very little had to be discarded. Under the branches was 2 cubic yards of fine mulch, richer and more fragrant than any store bought version. That bed now holds loads of green tomatoes ready to ripen. None of my other beds are as fast growing or producing, though they all contain the same compost, manure and mulch on top. Fertilizing is the same too. Can't ignore results like that!
Fantastic, informative, and inspiring. Thank you for sharing! GOD PROVIDES!!!
I like what Paul does and I LOVE his enthusiasm for the Lord!! Great interview!
This man is so humble.
Great video! I love the natural approach. This combined with my ollas for irrigation has helped me go on vacation for days, up to a week and not worry about my garden. Keep up the great work 0w0
What a blessing to be listening to this.
I started my first garden this year!
Thatks in part to both of you!
Thanks completely to God 🙏
It makes so much sense, people will still deny it.
Love him! His Back to Eden documentary is so beautiful.
❤Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and God's love and message for us all. We all need to listen more.
Wow!!! Glad to see Paul G on here!
I love to hear about faith and gardening! Two of the most important things to me! Thank you for sharing!
This was your best episode ever. Thanks timing was perfect for me.
Great learning video AND great Christian Witness!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!
I have always wanted to have good size garden but the homes I live in kinda had small yards or extremely bad soil.
the home I live in today has a 1/4 acre and very good sandy soil .
Even though the soil is good I wanted it to be even better!
After looking at the Back to Eden videos I decided that I didn't want to wait two or three years for the
Wood chip to break down.
@@shanemillard608 Thank you so much!
@@hollywood7702 you're welcome. Stefan is a wonderful resource as well
What a great method; I can’t wait to try it. What a blessing, thank you for sharing.
I about fell on the floor when you said God led you into the woods.
I just get the mulch layer from underneath the trees in the woods.
How refreshing to hear this early a.m.!
WOW....just wow!!!
Wow! This is awesome!!! My mine is swirling with new ideas for my farm! I watc6h the Back to Eden movie years ago and have been working towards it since...this was just the perfect timing for me to take another step towards fully achieving the end result of where I need to b. Thank you!!
I was so encouraged by this interview!
Paul is so wonderful. Thank you for this video. God Bless
We always layered potatoes. You can layer Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes. They will make potatoes in each layer.
We a long time ago started our garden with back to Eden God almighty is awesome ❤️😎
I've been watching Paul for a long time and I am always amazed at his fruit trees.
What I love about Paul? His passion for God. He is fruitful because of his intimacy, full stop. Seek ye first…
Beautiful testimony of God's care for us.
I can’t say how much I LOVE this video!! Thank you so much for sharing and caring❤️
