“Queen Nikki” aka “Ali’i Nikolé,” in Hawaiian, aka “Grandma Tiger Nikki-Nik,” Is a extra special individual shark teacher. Until I really got into shark identification research I hadn’t realized how many times, and for so many years, I had interacted with her. We have a long history together, which I am so grateful for, and I have many video files that show how she’s shaped my behavior in the water, and that has transcended outside of the water as well. I’m so deeply grateful for her patience with me over the years, when I was young (and much more wild) and still figuring things out, she taught me to move with calm, quiet, confidence and purpose, to be mindful of how I use my power.
Queen Nikki is one of the largest Tiger sharks at home in Hawaii and her quiet confidence is unmatched. There are other younger sharks who are more pushy, like Kalihi, however Nikki exudes a sense of regality with the way she swims and approaches. She doesn’t size up with other sharks often, which means she doesn’t bother comparing herself the way most other sharks do, she seems to be confident in her own skin, or of her size, social hierarchy, age, or wisdom, to approach with slow but deliberate intent.
Nikki is huge and powerful, however she doesn’t utilize her power often, usually only when putting pushy younger sharks in check if they are disrespecting her by swimming close to her point of interest. One of the many things that both my husband and I really love about Nikki is that she seeks out interaction. It’s humbling to have a 15+ foot Tiger shark calmly and slowly swim up to you, almost stopping, closing her mouth, and patiently awaiting a point of contact. Sometimes she will approach closely and slowly turn to the side and almost stall, drifting in the swells, to brush up against us or a boat. Occasionally she is carried by a swell or doesn’t turn early before she brushes up against the boat and she’s bumped and cracked the boat engines and dive ladder a few times. Even a gentle push from such a large and powerful shark is enough to break through thick plastic and crack aluminum welds. It’s humbling that she approaches us so much more gently than the boat and other sharks.
Over the years I’ve watching Nikki interact with many other individual sharks and many individual humans, she’s helped me to pass on important lessons to safety diver trainee’s I’ve brought in. Professional shark safety divers fulfill an important and much needed role in a safety and conservation position, speaking up for sharks, and facilitating peaceful interactions. It is the wisdom of a grandma, to use your power only when truly needed, to be calm, quiet, and confident, and to teach the younger ones in hopes that they will help change the world for the better.

You are the best ambassador for these animals. I was on a long sailing journey in my twenties and was always afraid of sharks when I went into the sea… until I encountered sharks in the wild. Then I realized that they are just animals with their own dignity and not the monsters we made them in our imagination.

What should I expect from an animal if not even humans, from whom one would expect far more intelligence and understanding, can manage peaceful coexistence. Who kills animals for fun and adorns himself with trophies. When it comes to animals, we usually don't understand their culture because we don't have enough information, especially when it comes to marine animals. But with humans, their incorrect behavior towards nature and themselves is well known and should be condemned accordingly.

Hey Ocean Ramsey! In my humble opinion, you are such an amazing human! Please tell me if you think the snorkeler in the Cook Islands several years ago was telling the truth when she said a humpback whale “saved her and her companion from a huge tiger shark” even though they never filmed it nor acted concerned of being attacked? (I met the same whale in Tonga two years later and this juvy just wanted to play with humans, no shark scare or anything.)

Love your work it has been very inspiring to me as a new Marine Biologist with my focus being on researching shark behavior. Question - does your different pattern wet suits impact the different sharks levels of curiosity compared to other divers that may be only wearing solid black suits? Since sharks don't see in color but more Grey scale does this change their possible perception of you in the water, especially at different depths were surface light my not reach as far?

Question 2 - Do you think the sharks you work with regularly recognize your scent in the water compared? Have your tried testing it out of curiosity? As I had been typing my first question the second one came to mind about how the shark recognizes you compared to other divers or people in the water it may encounter. The subject of mistaken identity is often brought up, but what about sharks recogniition of a familiar identity compared to new encounters with human strangers?

You become what you do! Take out a clean piece of paper, & list all the things you love to do, & the things you're interested in.
Make another list of people you know of, that are doing something that you love, as a career.
Do you see someone on your list, who earns a living doing something that you love or are interested in ? Write that down with a star for emphasis.
A golden rule of thumb, is it pays to know persons in charge. Those people know an entire network of other people, & can introduce YOU to them! The fastest way to find a job you love, is hanging out with the people who actually work that job or internship.
      Ask one of those people
if you could shadow them for a day, or a week, to see what it's like?! From there, you will really get a feel for what it's like to work in the field, & they will see you working alongside like a potential employee. "It really reveals alot. Maybe you see you had misperseptions of what all someone does.
Next write down the good/the bad/& the ugly about the field or job. Next - find out (by asking) what you'll need to do in order to get this kind of job? Schooling, degrees, internships , programs. Now that you have gleened everything - you have a decision to make. Either get started now, procrastinate & let fear & doubt creep in, or conclude that working in this field is not for you!
Work is always going to be hard work. You will do things in every field, that you don't like, so you can be promoted to a position you'll one day love, like Blue! She had to do at least 6-8 years of college work in the field of Biology, & probably did a 2-4 yr internship specifically studying sharks. By then, she probably got her scuba licence, & learned Free Diving! All so she could learn about the conduct of shark's in the water, adjusting her responses to them, & developing patterns of interactions, together. After years & years of swimming with sharks, they come to her, for a swim - the same one's that she has formed an everlasting bond with.
Lastly, we count ourselves lucky & blessed 😇, to be a witness to the reverant beauty, elegance, & mystery she's created, so she can teach the world that shark's are not only killing machines. There is another side to them because of one beautifully devoted woman, named Blue!
You can start you Journey today! Go get that blank piece of paper.......👀 🤔 👍🤓
