  • SLOW TV is an attempt to combat the fast-paced swipe-through click-bait video that has become so ubiquitous across media platforms. So here's my Slow TV Coffee Roasting. It's 13 minutes of one roast, from green bean start to roasty toasty finish.
What do you notice about the color of the coffee as the roast progresses?
What about the sound of the beans as they tumble in the roaster?
The coffee: Javier Rubio Anaerobic Natural, Colombia (15 pounds)
    The machine: Loring 15k Falcon
The warehouse: Black & White Coffee Roasters in Raleigh, NC
    Timestamps
00:04 opening the jute coffee bag
    00:42 scooping green (unroasted) coffee
01:05 lifting green coffee into hopper
01:31 charging green coffee into roasting drum
    [ roasting ]
11:44 using the trier to smell the beans
12:02 dropping the finished beans into the cooling tray
12:13 a closer look into the cooling tray
12:32 lifting the next batch of coffee into the hopper
12:50 starting the process again (go back to 1:20 to make a roasting loop!)
I hope you enjoy the background warehouse noises, rhythmic roasting sounds, and beginning-to-end process of this coffee being roasted! Honestly, I really enjoyed slowing down to film and edit this video. It is a new approach for me, and I liked how it turned out. What about you?
Do you like this Slow TV vibe, or would you prefer a shorter video with cuts to move it along? Do you need a voiceover to explain what I'm doing, or background music, or is the soothing soundtrack of the roastery interesting enough? Did you prefer any particular camera angle over the others? Should I do more videos like this, or absolutely not?
Let me know in the comments, and thanks for watching!

Wow, great video. I was mesmerized. My favorite UA-cam coffee person made an ASMR video featuring coffee roasting.

I really love this idea of simply watching a professional roast start to finish. As someone who's trying to roast at home (and having a lot of trouble), this is a nice way to see how you monitor the process throughout. Speaking of monitoring the process, are you looking at the temperature inside the roaster? Do you have a precise temperature and time you stop at, or do you go by the aroma (or a combination maybe)? Thank you!!

Totally liking the format, could have been nice with voiceover explanation too as it would provide interesting information but it is good as it is as a more "chilling" video. Almost ASMR it is true.
Middle ground might be with subtitles as explanation if you feel like doing so ? Just an idea.
Every camera angle added something here and none was less interesting than the other I think.
Got to say the choice of the camera at specific timeline is great anyway.
Would watch some more videos like this one, weaved between your more usual format :)
About the roast in itself, is it the video recording or does the sound fade out the more the roast progress ? Is it used as one of the clue about how a roast is going ?
And there is some kind of "acceleration" in the color changing, right ?
Now we definitely need to learn some more about it ! :D

Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely try and integrate some of your suggestions in future videos to try out different stylistic formats.
And yes, the sound changes throughout the roast. I didn't manipulate the audio at all! Rather, the beans lose weight & density, and increase in volume throughout the roasting process, so the sound changes! And yes with color as well - about 4-5min of "green", then they change from yellow to cinnamon-color to brown in the next 5 or so minutes. Cool, huh?

I would contact Geisen support and ask them about the vibration sound. Sometimes that will happen over time, but it could be a sign of a warped drum or that your drum is off-center. Definitely consult a roaster tech about it!
