    I am a huge Napoleon fan. I love the idea that a Corsican (of Italian descent) who was mocked by his peers for his Corsican accent became a commander of an artillery battery at 16, defeated the British at Toulon at 24, became a general at 26, Ruler of France (First Consul) at 30, Emperor of France at 34, and Emperor of Europe by 35. What amazing life.

    • @PierrotHG
      @PierrotHG 6 років тому +24

      Corsicans aren't (italians). Most of them will take offense if you imply that they are (italians). Napoléon wasn't "Emperor of Europe" (he never intended to rule over Europe and the French Empire never extended beyond Western Germany) and he wasn't "Emperor of France" either as he named himself "Emperor of the French" so that the French people would not see him as new King.

      Only bad thing I can think of Napoleon is that he was against womens rights, made himself an emperor and waged various (successful) wars. Comparing him to goddamn hitler is just an Insult.
      Hitler was a small, worthless, racist POS that killed millions of people and conducted genocide on people he considered inferior, while plunging Germany into fascism, brainwashing everyone.
      Looking at Napoleon: He introduced various effective reforms on government that were adopted worldwide, created a legal code that has been nearly adopted worldwide, gave powerful positions to people based on merit and not on nobility, and created an economy model that was very successful. He didn’t needlessly kill millions, and didn’t destroy everything he came into contact with.

    The statue in Napoleon the 2nd chapel is Napoleon the 1st. His son was named the duke of Reichstadt by his grandfather the Austrian emperor. The body of Napoleon II was transferred from Vienna to Paris in 1940. 100 years after his father was entombed here. The story of Napoleon’s son is also very interesting and tragic.

    Visconti has created one of the most astonishing masterpieces of architecture, and of funerary architecture with this unique tomb in the world, for its originality, its grandiose simplicity. We look at the fate that condenses there, we draw from the wind of glory.
    I don't know if it's ironic, but it's curious, it's unique like everything that concerns Him, l'Empereur, that he is the only man to whom we cry to still live when he has been dead for two centuries, this year, on May 5. So, "Vive l'Empereur !"

      On St. Helena he was in about 5 caskets enclosed within each other. So I think these caskets are also the ones he is buried in now, but they probably added even more. His coffin was opened on St. Helena to confirm that he was the person buried in it and I think that was the only time it happened. The generals and servants who had been on St. Helena with Napoleon confirmed that it was definitely the Emperor.

    First comment! I'm starting to wonder why the church is called Les invalides after this video. Thanks for the insight!

    • @PierrotHG
      @PierrotHG 6 років тому +4

      Because it was ordered by louis XIV as a retirement home for military veterans and disabled soldiers ("For those who risked their lives and offered their blood for the Monarchy"). The name is the shortened form of "Hôpital des Invalides" or "Hôtel des Invalides" as it is now known which litteraly translates to "Residence for disabled soldiers". By extension the church's name where Napoléon's tomb is located (Dôme des Invalides) is also shortened to "Les Invalides".

      Silence and American tourist in Europe do not fit well together. I don't know where you're from James, but American tourists are overwhelmingly obnoxiously loud.

      He was given absolution and sought it out near the end of his life. He also made sure he had his excommunication withdrawn by the Pope. Napoleon died in a state of grace.

    I wanna be buried like that! Napoleon doesn’t have to worry about being too hot or too cold. He doesn’t have to worry about ground water flooding his casket as he rests.
