I love the idea that a Corsican (of Italian descent) who was mocked by his peers for his Corsican accent became a commander of an artillery battery at 16, defeated the British at Toulon at 24, became a general at 26, Ruler of France (First Consul) at 30, Emperor of France at 34, and Emperor of Europe by 35. What amazing life.

When I saw this tomb, the sight of it just mesmerized me. It is one of the most incredibly impressive things I have ever seen. Though not displayed in ANY way as visually open, the tomb of the Duke of Wellington is also amazing.

The statue in Napoleon the 2nd chapel is Napoleon the 1st. His son was named the duke of Reichstadt by his grandfather the Austrian emperor. The body of Napoleon II was transferred from Vienna to Paris in 1940. 100 years after his father was entombed here. The story of Napoleon’s son is also very interesting and tragic.

They opened the coffin on St. Helena and confirmed that he was the one in it (some of his St. Helena companions and servants were present). There was a huge state funeral, millions came to see his casket being taken to Les Invalides. This tomb wasn't built until later but he was in Les Invalides in some room until a suitable tomb was built.
On St. Helena he was in about 5 caskets enclosed within each other. So I think these caskets are also the ones he is buried in now, but they probably added even more. His coffin was opened on St. Helena to confirm that he was the person buried in it and I think that was the only time it happened. The generals and servants who had been on St. Helena with Napoleon confirmed that it was definitely the Emperor.
