This BMX bike restoration is of a retro gold Raleigh Super Burner Mk2. I am sure for many this will bring back some great childhood memories, and I hope the video inspires some of you to chase that childhood dream bike.
The video covers some brief history of the Raleigh BMX, before being completely stripped down, cleaned, restored, rebuilt then finally having some fun riding the Super Burner on a BMX track.
A little bit of history on the Raleigh BMX models. The Mk1 Raleigh burner was originally available in three models. The first models were available in blue or red typically with matt black front forks. At the same time the tuff burner was also available, the only difference being in stead of spoked wheels the tuff burner came with five spoked mag wheels. The top of the range model was the Super Burner with Gold paint work, black frame pads and this at first was only available with spoked wheels, however a later model became available with black mag wheels which became the Raleigh Super Tuff burner. The Ultra Burner was also available in two colours in black and gold, and silver and blue. The Mk2 Raleigh Burners came with some changes, plastic pedals different handlebar grips. The frame also had an upgrade with certain round tubes being replaced with more aero oval dynamic ones. A Mk2 can also be recognised by the letter R cut out of the front and rear wheel spindle.
I'm hoping these video’s inspire you to Recycle a Bicycle you may of once had, and to save a bike for future generations to enjoy and use. I've had so much fun doing this restoration and what better way to cycle then on a Recycled Old School BMX Bicycle.

I'm 48 years old seeing this BMX has put a big smile on my face.
Fantastic great to hear, thanks for watching and the support much appreciated
Im 51 and never got one....is it too late? lol
I had the original mark 1 with the round frame and black forks. I'm 53 next and it still remains the greatest thing I had. Can still remember the absolute joy on Christmas morning.
Mate glad you like it and happy it brought back some great memories. Thanks for sharing them 👍
I had a MK1 Super Burner in 1982 in gold. My first new bike at age 11. I was so chuffed and envy of the street.
Nice 👌 a Mk1 lovely! I hope it brought back some good memories 👍 Thanks for watching
@@BikeItUK it certainly did! Thank you.
This was my best Christmas ever.
I was so hoping for it. But there were no big parcels under the tree so I wasn't hopeful.
I opened a small packet and a peddle fell out and my dad said he would get the rest as soon as he could..... and 10 minutes later he wheeled it in front of the patio window and my mum opened the curtains to reveal it.
I rode that thing to death. Went over the handles a few times. Did a billion endos,
Kept it into my 20s hoping to restore it but lost it in a move. Had hoped to pass it to my son.
This is golden, I’m so glad it brought back this treasured memory. Thanks for sharing your personal story and your support. All the very best for the festive period 👍
I had the raleigh night burner. My friend had this bike. It brings back good memories...
Glad it brought back some fond memories, thanks for watching
This was my dream bike when I was a boy. I used to gaze at it in the Raleigh catalogue, totally in awe. My parents couldn’t afford one back then but I’m definitely gonna get one at some point though!
You should I’ve gone through most things I couldn’t have as a child 👍 Thanks for watching all the best
@@BikeItUK why not make your dream come true? Better late than never. We’re still boys at heart lol 😀👍
Brilliant job mate! I’d buy it 👍
My first BMX. It was also the first bike I used when I got into racing, followed by the Raleigh Aero and an RS1 Haro Group 1.
Hung up the racing gear aged 16, bought a 24" Haro cruiser aged 32! You can keep your MTB's, give me a 44/16 single gear any day
Hope it brought back some fond memories thanks for sharing all the best
I always wanted a Raleigh burner back in the early eighties.A few kids in the estate had them.I never got one.Eventually in 1984 I got a cheap immitation of a bmx.I never got a ride on a Raleigh burner.I wanted the gold coloured one😢 🇮🇪
I bought a very nice looking chrome burner mk1 from may 1983. It’s all original except the chain, grips, tyres. It’s my pride and joy and I love it 🥰
Nice one buddy, thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
A BMX? Awesome!
Glad you like 👍 thanks for the support
I had this bike. Bro had the night burner. Great times
I hope it brought back some great memories
Got a picture of me aged 13 I think with my brand new super burner mark 1 from star cycles in Worcester 1983 it was the greatest day of my life then happy days
Nice, glad it brought back such great memories
I was poor so only got the red base model, lusted after the Superburner, kids round here always peeled the gold lacquer off as preferred the chrome.
The red one was definitely the original one 😉 great times 👍 thanks for watching and your support
AWWWWWESOMEEE!! Takes me back to my childhood 😁😁😁
Good stuff glad you enjoyed it
Awesome resto mate, takes me back to the 80's 👍👍
Good to hear thanks for your support 👍
Polishing those old grubby rust less spokes is the hardest work . Hated them back in the day sore fingers and loads of time needed to do it. Be plenty of takers for that bike .. ! Love BMX its pure and simple .
Yes it’s definitely the worst part of restoring the bike for sure 😂🚲 thanks for your support it’s much appreciated 👍
Excellent work as always. That brought back some memories, although I have to wonder whether it was ever ridden. Original reflectors! As kids, they were the first thing that was binned 😂
😂 couldn’t agree more, so true! Thanks for your support glad it brought back some great memories
Awesome, what a beauty.
Glad you like it 👍
Beautiful time machine Andy
....makes one feel young again
Best regards...Rudy
Thanks Rudy, I had so much fun on the track with it. All the best and thanks for the support
..i had this bike..super tuff burner,with oval tubing,mag wheels...bought new from me mums catalogue...wish i still had it,even though im nearly 55 years old...awesome..
Hope it brought back some cherished memories. Amazing colour scheme glad you enjoyed it thanks for your support 👍
Great job Andy.😎😂
Thanks for watching and your support
I had a Mk 1 of these from new. The frame pads on the Mk1 had a shiny plastic finish back then.
😉 thanks for your know and watching hope it brought back some fond memories
I wanted that bike so bad for Christmas! I ended up getting the mark2 instead as my mother thought they’re all the same 🤣. Never got to own a super but a friend of mine had one & remains my favourite of all. Great video, would liked it to be longer though 👍
Much appreciated thanks for watching and sharing your personal memories 😉👍
Great work - I restore Dyno's down here in New Zealand and share the passion for bringing these awesome 80's and 90's bikes back to glory 👍
Many thanks for watching and the support, much appreciated
Been waiting months for this
Hope you enjoyed it thanks for your support
@@BikeItUK exceeded expectations by miles
I remember as a young lad back in the late 70s / early 80s there was a BMX circuit built by a local entrepreneur near my home in Swansea. I was a roadie through and through but remember going to watch the races. Nice one Andy :-)
To be fare I was the same, I’d always use a friends bike as a kid to have a go. It’s the same track I’d go when I was probably ten, it’s changed a bit since then. I was definitely the odd one out having a road bike. Thanks as always for your continued support 👍
Nice work mate!
I did my morning paper round on one of these back in the day. Most kids stripped them back to chrome once the gold enamel started flaking off due to scratches. I had a Puch Magnum as well with the yellow OGK mag wheels. Brilliant memories and thanks for sharing the video 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it and happy it brought back some fond memories. Thanks for your comment and support it’s much appreciated, 😉👍
Love to see what the kids used to newer bikes after they have a spin on it,to compare it.I looks Pure Class Andy well done!
Thanks John for the support glad you like it, much appreciated
I always enjoyed working on my youngest sons Bmx bikes. Fantastic job on the rebuild bike looks amazing.
Thanks again glad you enjoyed it 👍
Definitely brings back memories,
Takes me back to stripping bmx’s as a kid to repair & learning what goes where,
happy days, great video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it but more importantly brought back some happy memories I hope 😉👍
It’s still on my Christmas list almost 40 years later
😂thanks for watching 👍
Gosh this takes me back to the 80s - not just the Super Burner but Bruntwood Park BMX track too! Bust a rib there back in the day. Then again my mates were all on BMX bikes while I was on a Viscount racer 🙄 Awesome build and invoked great memories!
Wow I’m honestly not making this up Bruntwood was also my stomping ground as a kid and I was exactly the same. I’d get around some how on a road bike 😂👍 Thanks for watching and the support all the best
@@BikeItUK 😂
Well dome mate looks great
Thanks buddy 👍
Great job Andy, and like you brings back many great memories keep them coming
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
Looks like Bruntwood track. Good work :)
It is! Thanks for watching 👍
Handlebar angle on a BMX is slightly pulled back. The steering tube angle is usually 71-74°, so the handlebar should be somewhere between 80-85° for best handling. Just don't push too far forward and don't go beyond 90°. That's how the unhoused ride their Walmart BMX bikes.
Thanks for watching and the information 👍
Super job on the Burner Andy and I also liked the subtle editing with the audio fades. It's not just about the restoration for me, it's the video it's self, so another big thumbs up buddy.
Thanks for your continued support means a lot it’s much appreciated. 👍
Another great restoration, keep these awesome vids coming
Thanks for the support glad you liked it
Awesome build Andy! Yes that Kuwahara BMX bike in ET from Howie Cohen’s Everything Bicycles Co. really set things in motion for the BMC industry.
Great film in its day, I was so young at the time. First film I got upset about that 🤔 thanks for the information much appreciated all the best 👍
Beautiful finish, super video, lovely to see a bike like this on your stand, very relatable 🚴👍
Glad you like it, definitely good to mix it up. All bikes a great, full stop 😉👍 Thanks for your support
Nice find and nice results!!
Thanks glad you liked it 👍
Another stunning job Andy 👌😃
Thanks for your support Rick all the best
Awesome job love 💘 the old stuff I rode one when I was a kid lol
Hope it brought back some good memories buddy thanks as always for your support
Lanjutkan ABG awak nostalgia saya jadi y
Thanks 🙏
cracking job Andy, nice one - always wanted the gold super burner when I was a nipper :) looked like fun around the pump track!
Mate I’m getting on now, it honestly made me feel a teenager again going around that track. Thanks for your support and watching
@@BikeItUK excellent :)
Great video as always. The burner was on my Christmas list along with Grifter but got neither. Scared for life lol.
Mate, still time yet! 😉👍 glad you enjoyed it thanks for the support
Another amazing job! I remember them from the 80s although I never had one as a kid myself. Are you planning to keep this one?
Thanks for the support, this one was done for someone else so no it’s not being added to the collection
Always loved the Burners, my mate had this one, I had a Night Burner, was £93 back then new.. had a great time jumping ramps and completely destroying it... what was i thinking...
Sounds like us all just enjoying them how they were made to be. Great to see the survivors though. Hope it brought back some fond memories 👍
Hi, I have a BMX Raleigh that my grandfather gave me when I was around 7 years old. Now me and my 6 year old son are going to restore it and give it a new look for him to have some fun. Do you know where I can buy the stickeres and padsets?
Thanks and great job with all your restorations
That’s great to hear, try this guy I’ve used him on the Raleigh team styler www.esemdesign.co.uk/store/
Just done this myself. Never had a BMX as a kid, I guess my parents didn't like me as I had a grifter instead.
Yes I had a silver grifter myself, they were so heavy probably why my legs are so chunky 🤔 👍
Great restoration again Andy, what is the fluid you use to degrease all those parts when you’ve taken them off? Thanks
Thanks glad you like it, to degrease I simply use petrol or gasoline as a thinner. Hope this helps
A mix of petrol and paraffin would be less ‘extreme’…. have you tried that ?
I use plain paraffin for oily /.greasy car bits and bike chains… add a splash of petrol for more ‘bite’.
That head tube angle is super mellow. Never seen one like it. What's the offset on the forks?
Thanks buddy…I honestly have no idea. Thanks for watching
Looks amazing! I’m 50 now and just bought the 40th anniversary blue and yellow tuff burner! Amazing memories
Nice!! Thanks for watching enjoy buddy
Amazing. Where did you get the stickers from, I am doing restore myself on Mk1 Raleigh burner
On this build they came from MRCreations on FB. Thanks for watching hope this helps
Had this bike & peeled off the gold to make it chrome. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks for watching Roy hope it brought back some memories
Great job. Did you have the rims re anodized too?
I was thinking the same thing .
The wheels were just polished and touched up with metal spray. With the cost of the frame and it not being a pro burner costs were already becoming expensive. Thanks for watching and your support
@@BikeItUK I'm stunned at how cheap some bmx components are the bottom bkt and chain set always look basic , also the brakes are less than functional . so i guess the idea was to never pedal and brake !!!
BMX BANDITS movie Andy check it out!
I’m on it, will do thanks buddy 👍
@@BikeItUK you will not be disappointed amazing film
I'd love to see a Grifter
Grifter 🤔 I actually had the silver one. I remember my mum and dad surprising with it. Watch this space if one comes up I can not miss out on.
@@BikeItUK I had a sliver one too!! I’d love folding the mudguards under the tires to make it sound like a motorbike. We moved to America in 1984 whe I was 12. My aunt sold it for me and sent me the £40 she got for it. It’s funny how a piece of steel can hold such sentimental value. Thanks for bringing these amazing machines back to life.
What did Mark do with the frame Andy?
I think 🤔 he’s removed the outer lacquer which gives it its gold effect. The frames are chromed then lacquered, so I’m sure he has reapplied the outer layer.
How do they make it look gold 🤔
fala muito
🙏
Good morning is it gold color paint?
I don’t think so, it’s plated I think
This for sale Andy
Hello Matt unfortunately not, it is a bike I restored for Cera Cycloan. They have it in there shop.
How much was it to re do the gold?
Think 🤔 is was about £120
Can they be bought 😊
The one I do on the channel generally sell within a day or two on our website or eBay
Why did you paint the brakeset ?....if your gonna do it right do it right first time...annodise is the correct finish not paint....also the weinmann rims could have done with stripping and polishing up ready for reannodising
Think the reasoning being simply cost over the model of bike that it is. Maybe worth while for a pro burner. Thanks for watching anyway all the best
@@BikeItUK sorry to be picky...its just I've restored a good few Burners in my time (A Mk2 Super being one of them) to factory spec and I see many good restorations let down by cutting corners...its an OCD thing lol....sorry to be the one
Before I get massive criticism I think you come across as a really nice geezer but you destroyed a perfectly good burner. I , personally like to see the scuffs and bumps and maybe some dirt from the eighties. Strip,Clean and assemble for an original burner. This bikes value has halved .....once original decals are removed.
Really nice job but now a restored burner not an original one
Hay, life would be extremely boring if we all thought the same 😉. Completely understand where your coming from. Thanks so much for watching, all the best buddy
I'm buying 1 £700
Thanks for watching, enjoy 😉
Their was no need to restore that nice og saviour you have ruined it imho I would rather a saviour over a polished turd as it's only OG once and you have taken away the bikes charm its history ok if the bike was ina mess then ok but this is just criminal imo
Thanks for watching and your opinion. All the best 😉👍
I would throw that brand of bike…. In the TRASH!
Good job it’s not yours then 😉 thanks for watching 👍 take care
@@BikeItUK thanks for sharing… I like retro bmx… have a good one!
