  • On this episode of Searching for History, Erin and I drive out to rural Grays Harbor County looking for signs of the town of Sharon. We don’t know a lot about Sharon. A 1941 topographic map indicates a school there and there is a Sharon cemetery with gravestones that date to as early as the 1880s but was there ever a town? Join us as we visit the ghost town of Sharon.

    If anyone has knowledge about the history of Sharon and if there was anything resembling a town there, please let us know.

      Yes, please let us know. We know about a post office, the school and cemetery. Was there a store or any other buildings?

      I didn’t find anything on the internet about the town. The county museum might have something.

      @@petergreenwood1043 While the internet has a lot of information on it, unfortunately, not a lot of information for little towns like Sharon that are now just a name on a map. Thanks for looking and thanks for watching!

    Those shots of the river at the beginning are so beautiful. I've always enjoyed visiting old cemeteries, though it's sad to see so many who died young. Thanks for the tour.

      Here is a Montesano area idea. Have you heard of John Tornow? If not, Timberland library has a book "John Tornow Victim or Villain".. read that. Probably one of the best historical stories of the area.. could lead to a cool video in search of locations in the story ..

    • @searchingforhistory

      I am a little embarrassed to say I have never heard of John Tornow! I will find a copy of the book and see if it is something we can turn into a video. Thank you so much for this idea. We definitely need every idea we (or you or anyone) can think of!

      @searchingforhistory it is an exciting story, tragic too. But several sites still exist near Monte and Matlock that were part of the story which i think goes back to the 1910s or 20s is i remember right.

    Everyone one of your videos makes me want to visit the Northwest more and more. What a beautiful and fascinating place.
    You know I have to ask… what do you think the headstones are made of? Limestone or sandstone? They look weathered and rough. Also the rock of ages tombstone was fascinating.
    HI Thora!!!

    • @searchingforhistory
      @searchingforhistory  7 днів тому +1

      I am going to go with sandstone. Why? Not because I know for certain what I am looking at but because there are two big quarries around here that were active in the turn of the century era (1880s-1920s). The Wilkeson sandstone quarry and the Tenino Sandstone quarries. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place, this is true. Thanks for watching and Thora says hello, "woof, woof."

    Thank you guys for sharing. You presentation is as if I'm experiencing the adventure myself. A fine guided tour . On this one with only two attractions , the grange and the grave yard, it brings to mind the importance and the idea of both in local histories In Thurston county there seems to be at least a dozen old granges . Granges',and what they are could be a good topic. Also small community cemeteries like McLane. Thank you

    • @searchingforhistory
      @searchingforhistory  4 дні тому +1

      I think the history of granges in Thurston County or Southwest Washington, etc. would be an interesting topic. It is definitely one of our goals to make such a video. I recently became aware of the McLane cemetery. However, I am really not sure who it is accessed. Would you happen to know how to enter the cemetery? What is the best way to access?

    • @jaysmith6255
      @jaysmith6255 2 дні тому +2

      During recess Well at McLane Grade school I would run down the bank Cross the freeway And up the other side today I drove over there and there's a church with the house above it The driveway up to the house Used to be the way To drive up there you might contact the Squakson Indian tribe

    I am a decendent of the Ridings Family that homesteaders there in Sharon. In fact the road that the grange sits along is Ridings Road and my great, great grandparents are buried in the Sharon cemetery. My family members have been members of the Sharon Grange for 5 generations with my great grand parents and grandparents as charter members.
