So I work 3rd shift. Got home this morning and ran out to the deer stand when I got back to the house I had planned to go straight to bed so I can feel refreshed at work tonite, decided I'd check my subs for a new vid before bed and what do I find?? An over an hour long reloading video. So much for that getting well rested before work idea
I liked subscribed and saved. I used to reload for everything from 1980-90 but life changed and now I’m old and want to start again. Everything you said makes good sense. Looking forward to watching your videos and relearning. Thanks.
Watching this video reminded me of a lesson I learned while evaluating the fired headspace and other dimensions in my 6.5 CM. I found there is a big difference between fire forming with a 95 grain Hornady V-MAX and a 143 grain ELD-X. For example, the headspace on new/virgin Lapua brass was 1.553". After firing a 95 grain V-MAX, the headspace only grew slightly to 1.554" and the case head diameter was unchanged. However, after firing a 143 grain ELD-X, the headspace grew 7 thousands to 1.560" and the case head diameter increased by 2 thousands. Subsequent tests with Hornady brass yielded similar results. Bottom line: you'll get more consistent brass after fire forming with the larger bullets.

Congrats on getting the new "toys". I use the full length dies for the new brass then use the Hornady neck size die after fire forming. They are working reasonably well. So far, I have not used the brass any more than 3 times. I find it helpful to label all the parts some how. I can put them in a labeled plastic bag ... like having 3 seating stems that have a similar appearance. I also find it helpful to put all my data into a spreadsheet. In not to long you will have a LOT of data.
Long but good video, sir! While this geared for a cartridge I’ll probably never own (expensive), much less reload, I still glean loads of information from you, which will help me out sometime soon after the new year when I plan to start nervously reloading .223. So, thank you for your diligence.
Thanks for the video, you couldn’t make it any simpler than this. As many reloaders know there is so much more you can learn to really dial in your seating depth more accurately, as well as measuring your rifles chamber first so you know exactly how far your bullets need seated in your brass in relation to your rifling lands of the barrel when chambered. As you stated this was a very basic video, and you emphasized to keep learning so this is exactly what you said, the bare basics! Good luck with your channel, and for keeping it simple, many reloaders have great techniques for extremely precise reloads, but many of these videos can seem overwhelming and intimidating to many. However as a person studies and watches enough videos, you then start to understand exactly just what to do if you want match accuracy reloads with consistency. God bless and be safe everyone.

Great video. I crimp all my rifle rounds and have seen my spreads cut in half. I use a Lee FCD for all calibers and my Savage 12FV in 6.5 Creedmoor regularly holds .5" groups or less using Win 760 and 120gr PPU OTM bullets. Might be a good video (short) comparing an identical load crimped and uncrimped, 25 rounds of each with group sizes averaged for final comparison.

I just got a bit crazy and ordered a browning xbolt in 26 nosler. crazy good ballistics and sky high muzzle velocities. I know you had a bad experience with 22 nosler but would be cool if you got interested in 26 nosler and did a short series on it. Thanks man, keep filming.

Hornady recommends that you do not over tighten the zip spindle. If you have a primer that is extremely tight (usually one that has a military crimp) or a flash hole that is way off center, the whole zip spindle assembly will "zip" up instead of breaking the decapping pin, or breading the zip rod. I use the universal decapping die from hornady and it has saved me quiet a few times when decapping 5.56 brass.
you should take a sharpie or nail polish and mark the different seating stems in different colors and put a dot on the boxed of bullets that go with it so in future videos you are not messing around looking for the correct seating stem.
i finally broke down and bought a powder dispenser.Lyman gen 6 and your videos and the way you explain things is why i bought it.I did my own research but your thoughts pushed me toward the gen 6.
Great presentation. Continuity very was smooth. I’m just starting load development for my 6.5 Creedmoor and posted a seating depth question on several reloading sites. Your site / name came up as a good resource for seating depth variables. Glad I spent the time watching (recently bought a Hornady die set) as I picked up some valuable information.
I went to a Hornady reloading class when I was first starting out. The instructor spoke highly of the "zip spindle" design. It is supposed to by threaded in and out by hand. However, if you get a stuck primer or mis-aligned case, the spindle will slide out of the die instead of breaking your decapping pin. Hope that clarifies the design.
oh yeah, the zip spindle have saved me from the same faith the RCBS die suffered - a missaligned case made the expander pin hit the side, on the hornady it just sounds like something rippin' but the pin and case is fine. On rcbs i just meet resistance, and ended up making me a new fish hook, albeit a bit dull. Thank god the LEE pin fits the RCBS dies.

If you have the zip spindle to the right tension, the treads will give instead of breaking the decapping pin. Basically a force limiter if used correctly. I tighten mine to where they are just a bit tighter than where it slips on the threads. Saved my decapping pin a couple times now.

Great video! I got the Hornady creedmoor match set and have been really impressed with their full length die. It takes way less force to size brass than I've ever experienced.
Loading with Hornady once-fired brass, 140gr ELD-Ms and the Custom Grade II dies, I get .002 or less run-out on every 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge I load. I am using the second seating stem that comes with the dies. I thin you will be VERY happy with those dies.
smaller diameter of the primer means less surface area for back-pressure to push on, which in turn less force acting on the walls of the primer trying to overcome friction fit between wall of the primer pocket and primer wall. stick with small primer for brass longevity.
Thanks for the video. I'm going to maybe help save some time. I've been shooting and reloading 6.5 for almost 2 years now after I got a RPR. I started off using Hornady brass but have since switched to Lapua which is more expensive but well worth it. My SD's and groups improved considerably. Using new Lapua brass, I Full Length resized it using my Lee F/L die making sure to lube the inside of the necks as well. I then trimmed it using the Lee trimmer. I switch from the 140gr Hornady ELD-M to the 147's which I think my RPR likes better. I was able to achieve .42 MOA using 42.4 gr of H4350 and CCI 450 primers (*Disclaimer, please do your own ladder load testing as these are above published max loads). My bullets are seated using a Whidden micrometer seater. My bullets are about .0200 off the lands. SD's are like 2.6 - 7 consistently. FPS is about 2700 or so depending on weather. I'm a bench rest shooter, not a hunter so you may find something else works better for your application. Good luck!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I’m just getting into reloading and it was great to see the process and hear the commentary. Between your videos and the reloading manual, I learned quite a bit and felt pretty confident and comfortable as a first time reloader. I went out to the range yesterday and shot my hand loads for the first time and was very pleased with the results. Shot 9 five shot groups with my Savage 10 BA Stealth in 6.5 and median group was 0.68” center to center. Thanks again!
Johnny your channel has been an epic resource for getting started reloading for my Tikka T3x in 6.5 Creedmoor. Thank your for your time and effort! For the most part my loads shoot well but there is one bullet that I have been having a really hard time with: The Hornady 120gr GMX 6.5mm. I have tried several different loads, and I have pretty much given up on this bullet for my rifle. If you would like, I can send you my remaining box of 50. Maybe you will have better luck making it shoot out of your gun, and perhaps create a video on it in the future. It would be a fantastic resource for those that hunt in the communist republic of California, as it is a very popular bullet, and lead core bullets are banned there. Let me know if this is something that you are interested in doing!
I shoot and hand load 6.5 CM. You have done so many load tests and collected a large amount of data. I think it would be interesting if you did a video summarizing your top 3 best (preferred?) loads. The list would include top 3 bullets, powder, & primers and which combination yield the best accuracy. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for your work in making them. (:- D

I get hang fire with small rifle primers just like you showed in your series on hang fires. Feels like shooting with percussion cup with that slight delay before the bang. I switched to using large primers only now.
So heres how i determine my COL on the cheap. Buy a wooden dowel slightly smaller than the size of your bore, just enough so that it doesn't wiggle much. Probably run you about 10 cents at home depot. Close your bolt on an empty chamber and insert the dowel down the barrel until its resting against the bolt face. NOTE: Make sure your not on the ejector or it will completely screw your data. With it resting on the bolt face, make a mark at the end of your barrel. Next, take an empty piece of brass and start a bullet. Leave it way long. Chamber the dummy round. Insert the dowel again until its just touching the tip of the bullet. Dont push the bullet deeper into the case. Make another mark at the end of your barrel. The resulting measurement between marks will be the COL from the bolt face to the lands! Works great. There, my long winded 2 cents worth.

Johnny, I am just starting out as a reloader to begin with and my first to reload will be 6.5 creedmoor. I just happen upon this video first in my search and must say - I am very impressed with your instruction. I appreciate that not only you follow through to a very detail of reloading as you know it, but you also back it up with the research you have done for the video . I also appreciate that you are not rushing through your explanations and come back to parts where you need to clarify something. Thank you. With that said I have a question. As it stands I have a lot of gear to purchase. What would be the optimal list to start with and get into the process without having to say - darn it, I need to order this or that item and putting it on hold? I know that you mentioning few items in this video and perhaps I need to watch other videos by you on the reloading to find those items as a separate brand or type is being mentioned. But, if you were to bring a complete novice into this process what would be the startup list to produce one complete round? I much appreciate your suggestion.
El Cap, I cant recommend Johnny's 'Beginners Guide to Reloading' video series enough. It's a LOT to watch, probably over 6 hours of detailed equipment, instruction, ect for beginning to reload any ammo. He starts with the Lee classic kit, and goes over what works, and what doesnt, ect
Really great video! I realize I'm weighing in, late to the party, but in terms of bullet seating dies I have not found a better one than Forster. It is unfortunate that right now you cannot find one and they are sold out everywhere 😣. I went ahead and bought a Frankfort universal seating die. I really hope it's not a piece of crap

You would probably be surprised how well match kings work on deer! I use them in everything from 243 all the way up to 300 rum on deer and they are devastating on deer never used them on anything bigger than deer tho. They preform just like the eldx or Berger’s in all the deer we have shot with them and that’s probably somewhere around 25 deer over the last 5 or 6 years
If you have to change your primer punch, screw the long threaded stem out as far as you need to to get as much of the expander ball as possible below the base of the die and the. Lock the stem down tight in the die. Then, clamp the expander ball in a vise between wooden blocks and unscrew it with the die.
im thinking of buying a 6.5 creedmoor here in the uk for deer and long range varmint, looking at the factory ammo over here priced at £279.00 per 100 rounds, id imagine you could make a massive saving by reloading

Reloading I'm finding out is the only way to go, as it save me up to 50% off retail pricing, and your video is the first one I've watched on this subject. I found this very informative. You took the time to explain most things and took it for granted that the viewer would understand what you were talking about w/ some other things. Is there some place where I can find out a little more about your press? It's obvious you've been doing this for some time now. What sort of press would you recommend for someone like me - somewhat limited funds, undetermined amount of shooting time/rounds ergo not sure on the volume of reloading?

Lapua brass 1.92 with Berger 140 grain hybrids 2.810 and 42.5 grains of H-4350 in my tikka tac3 gives me approximately 0.45 inch groups at 200 @2775fps, no problems getting out to 1000yards.
Great info, I am waiting on my Grendel brass and projectiles to come in. I got the Lee pacemaker Dies and I cant wait to get putting them together. I may have to order me a couple of those micrometers though. and has anyone told you that you sound like Deuce and Guns. Lol

If you are taking time to measure the powder charges for safety and accuracy might as well take the time to weigh each bullet out of the Hornady Box before using it. I've seen a 143 grain ELD-X bullets weigh from 142.5 to 143.3 grains .Weigh all 100 in the box at the same time and put them into [ .2 grains or less ] sub-groups with each other and this will also improve accuracy. I usually get about 70-80 bullets from the box that will weigh within .2 grains of each other and use them for reloading my batch of ammo.
I sure hope you get to the H4350 and RL17 temperature sensitivity video, that's what I've been looking for. I can test the RL17 for you, but it will be at -10F lol
It looks like the treads are flat bc of the compression lock. If the treads were regular cut they would cause grooves in the compression fitting once it’s tightened down.
Its well worth ponying up for the micrometer seaters. I have been going more with Redding and Forster for seating dies as I cant read that damn Hornady Micrometer. Why in gods name did they not paint in the lines on the Microjust.
I just bought the Microjust from Cabela's and it has dark markings on the top cover. You might want to complain and ask if they can send a different cover for the Microjust so you can see the numbers.
Sweet. I'll have to pick up some of those sometime. The Hornady 140gr Match BTHP has been shooting amazing for me so far, and the Nosler CC is pretty similar. It seems these guns like the 140's!
I had the same issue with the lee dies and the 140Eld I took a drill bit and extended the relief hole in depth only. Seems to work. Interesting that they don't mate without modification or multiple inserts

Loading with Hornady once-fired brass, 140gr ELD-Ms and the Custom Grade II dies, I get .002 or less run-out on every 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge I load. I am using the second seating stem that comes with the dies. I thin you will be VERY happy with those dies.

smaller diameter of the primer means less surface area for back-pressure to push on, which in turn less force acting on the walls of the primer trying to overcome friction fit between wall of the primer pocket and primer wall. stick with small primer for brass longevity.
Thanks for the video. I'm going to maybe help save some time. I've been shooting and reloading 6.5 for almost 2 years now after I got a RPR. I started off using Hornady brass but have since switched to Lapua which is more expensive but well worth it. My SD's and groups improved considerably. Using new Lapua brass, I Full Length resized it using my Lee F/L die making sure to lube the inside of the necks as well. I then trimmed it using the Lee trimmer. I switch from the 140gr Hornady ELD-M to the 147's which I think my RPR likes better. I was able to achieve .42 MOA using 42.4 gr of H4350 and CCI 450 primers (*Disclaimer, please do your own ladder load testing as these are above published max loads). My bullets are seated using a Whidden micrometer seater. My bullets are about .0200 off the lands. SD's are like 2.6 - 7 consistently. FPS is about 2700 or so depending on weather. I'm a bench rest shooter, not a hunter so you may find something else works better for your application. Good luck!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. I’m just getting into reloading and it was great to see the process and hear the commentary. Between your videos and the reloading manual, I learned quite a bit and felt pretty confident and comfortable as a first time reloader. I went out to the range yesterday and shot my hand loads for the first time and was very pleased with the results. Shot 9 five shot groups with my Savage 10 BA Stealth in 6.5 and median group was 0.68” center to center. Thanks again!

Johnny your channel has been an epic resource for getting started reloading for my Tikka T3x in 6.5 Creedmoor. Thank your for your time and effort! For the most part my loads shoot well but there is one bullet that I have been having a really hard time with: The Hornady 120gr GMX 6.5mm. I have tried several different loads, and I have pretty much given up on this bullet for my rifle. If you would like, I can send you my remaining box of 50. Maybe you will have better luck making it shoot out of your gun, and perhaps create a video on it in the future. It would be a fantastic resource for those that hunt in the communist republic of California, as it is a very popular bullet, and lead core bullets are banned there. Let me know if this is something that you are interested in doing!
I had a set of Hornady dies for 7mm08 I loved them I always used Lyman does but I think I might use Hornady from now on really liked them
I shoot and hand load 6.5 CM. You have done so many load tests and collected a large amount of data. I think it would be interesting if you did a video summarizing your top 3 best (preferred?) loads. The list would include top 3 bullets, powder, & primers and which combination yield the best accuracy. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for your work in making them. (:- D
Use a magnet on the stem to lower it in or take it out of the die. Just an idea I had. Anyway. Great video. First comment but I have been watching for a few months. Definitely loving that Im on board for the 6.5 cm journey. Happy holidays sir
You’ll be happy you chose small primer. Only reason being the large primer stuff doesn’t last very long.
I get hang fire with small rifle primers just like you showed in your series on hang fires. Feels like shooting with percussion cup with that slight delay before the bang. I switched to using large primers only now.

So heres how i determine my COL on the cheap. Buy a wooden dowel slightly smaller than the size of your bore, just enough so that it doesn't wiggle much. Probably run you about 10 cents at home depot. Close your bolt on an empty chamber and insert the dowel down the barrel until its resting against the bolt face. NOTE: Make sure your not on the ejector or it will completely screw your data. With it resting on the bolt face, make a mark at the end of your barrel. Next, take an empty piece of brass and start a bullet. Leave it way long. Chamber the dummy round. Insert the dowel again until its just touching the tip of the bullet. Dont push the bullet deeper into the case. Make another mark at the end of your barrel. The resulting measurement between marks will be the COL from the bolt face to the lands! Works great. There, my long winded 2 cents worth.
Hornady dies are great, i have some custom grade dies for .45 colt, im hoping to build a AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor next year

Those are called acme threads on the decapping pin they're used commonly in industry. They hold up better than typical threads under stress/pressure

Johnny, I am just starting out as a reloader to begin with and my first to reload will be 6.5 creedmoor. I just happen upon this video first in my search and must say - I am very impressed with your instruction. I appreciate that not only you follow through to a very detail of reloading as you know it, but you also back it up with the research you have done for the video . I also appreciate that you are not rushing through your explanations and come back to parts where you need to clarify something. Thank you. With that said I have a question. As it stands I have a lot of gear to purchase. What would be the optimal list to start with and get into the process without having to say - darn it, I need to order this or that item and putting it on hold? I know that you mentioning few items in this video and perhaps I need to watch other videos by you on the reloading to find those items as a separate brand or type is being mentioned. But, if you were to bring a complete novice into this process what would be the startup list to produce one complete round? I much appreciate your suggestion.
El Cap, I cant recommend Johnny's 'Beginners Guide to Reloading' video series enough. It's a LOT to watch, probably over 6 hours of detailed equipment, instruction, ect for beginning to reload any ammo. He starts with the Lee classic kit, and goes over what works, and what doesnt, ect

With the seating stem out put you allen wrench back up into the die, put the new stem in and lower in into place with lowering the allen wrench.

It is unfortunate that right now you cannot find one and they are sold out everywhere 😣. I went ahead and bought a Frankfort universal seating die. I really hope it's not a piece of crap

You would probably be surprised how well match kings work on deer! I use them in everything from 243 all the way up to 300 rum on deer and they are devastating on deer never used them on anything bigger than deer tho. They preform just like the eldx or Berger’s in all the deer we have shot with them and that’s probably somewhere around 25 deer over the last 5 or 6 years

When you get to the match type loads, Berger Hybrids are the way to go. No finicky with seating depth and not needed to be jammed into lands.
If you have to change your primer punch, screw the long threaded stem out as far as you need to to get as much of the expander ball as possible below the base of the die and the. Lock the stem down tight in the die. Then, clamp the expander ball in a vise between wooden blocks and unscrew it with the die.
That should say "...below the base of the die, and then lock..." Too lazy to pull up desktop to edit:)
im thinking of buying a 6.5 creedmoor here in the uk for deer and long range varmint, looking at the factory ammo over here priced at £279.00 per 100 rounds, id imagine you could make a massive saving by reloading

I'm just getting started in shooting larger guns and found this video. Reloading I'm finding out is the only way to go, as it save me up to 50% off retail pricing, and your video is the first one I've watched on this subject. I found this very informative. You took the time to explain most things and took it for granted that the viewer would understand what you were talking about w/ some other things. Is there some place where I can find out a little more about your press? It's obvious you've been doing this for some time now. What sort of press would you recommend for someone like me - somewhat limited funds, undetermined amount of shooting time/rounds ergo not sure on the volume of reloading?

I like superformance a lot for long barrels. It’s slow as hell but man you can get a lot of velocity out of it. It’s similar to 4831sc

Lapua brass 1.92 with Berger 140 grain hybrids 2.810 and 42.5 grains of H-4350 in my tikka tac3 gives me approximately 0.45 inch groups at 200 @2775fps, no problems getting out to 1000yards.

Hornady makes a OAL Gage, they work awesome! You can find the best OAL easy.
I noticed that on the Hornady website they recommend the C.375 bushing for the 6.5 Creedmoor.
If you are taking time to measure the powder charges for safety and accuracy might as well take the time to weigh each bullet out of the Hornady Box before using it. I've seen a 143 grain ELD-X bullets weigh from 142.5 to 143.3 grains .Weigh all 100 in the box at the same time and put them into [ .2 grains or less ] sub-groups with each other and this will also improve accuracy. I usually get about 70-80 bullets from the box that will weigh within .2 grains of each other and use them for reloading my batch of ammo.
I sure hope you get to the H4350 and RL17 temperature sensitivity video, that's what I've been looking for. I can test the RL17 for you, but it will be at -10F lol
The bushing needed for the Hornady comparator for 6.5 Creedmoor is # 5-26.

You could use a magnet on a stick to lower the seating stem into the die without the worry of messing up the edge.
It looks like the treads are flat bc of the compression lock. If the treads were regular cut they would cause grooves in the compression fitting once it’s tightened down.
Berger hybrid is my go to. The regular VLDs are super picky. I run .040 off the lands
Its well worth ponying up for the micrometer seaters. I have been going more with Redding and Forster for seating dies as I cant read that damn Hornady Micrometer. Why in gods name did they not paint in the lines on the Microjust.
My two t/c shoot sub moa one is a compass is exactly what you got ..the other is a match gun in 338lapua
My buddy shoots creedmoor, and he says try seeting some loads into the rifling "crush". His groups cut in half the size.
I just bought the Microjust from Cabela's and it has dark markings on the top cover. You might want to complain and ask if they can send a different cover for the Microjust so you can see the numbers.
I tried Nosler 140 grain Custom Competition and it shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards with both me and my dads Thompson Compasses using IMR 4350
Sweet. I'll have to pick up some of those sometime. The Hornady 140gr Match BTHP has been shooting amazing for me so far, and the Nosler CC is pretty similar. It seems these guns like the 140's!
There is an extra seating stem under that small piece of foam in that Hornady box...
I had the same issue with the lee dies and the 140Eld I took a drill bit and extended the relief hole in depth only.
Seems to work. Interesting that they don't mate without modification or multiple inserts
Only powder I could find was h380. Not sure what performance I'll be getting. Going to try some 142 grain matchkings.
