Ramsey makes a great point about power fantasies in the martial arts and self defense circles. A huge number of martial arts people really are massive weirdos and a lot of them live in a strange state of paranoia while at the same time they're secretly hoping to get into one of these "street fights" and finally get to "defend themselves" and put away the "bad guy" and be the hero of the day.
Stay away from alchohol - I hear that lol I was the guy in the wrong half the time at clubs. Clubs and excess drinking turned me into a person I didn’t like. I found such environments bad for my mental health
I talked with John a few times and used some moves he taught me in sparring. Very effective. He was actually worried if hurt my sparring partner. I told him I pulled my punch - I used an Infantry Man hook and feint on my opponent and definitely ring his bell but he was ok bc I was only going 50 percent
The idea self defense issues will disappear if you only drink around friends is so wildly ignorant. Now that sounds like a take from someone living in a nice neighborhood. I grew up getting jumped by people who didn't use any substances, and I rarely ever knew the people involved. If there is a weak police presence, guns will be needed for self defense, regardless of how the people are living around you. Luckily, in my town, the police presence is barely big enough for it to be very rare for someone to get shot. The bad news is I couldn't choose between staying away and using a gun. My only option was to stay and fight with my hands. That's the scenario hand to hand self defense is for. And that will never disappear, as long as there is life in the universe.
growing up in Los Angeles i realized most bullies rely on intimidation factors to much, most bullies don't like to get hit in the mouth, rather u win or lose, hitting hard back usually keep the bully from bullying u in the future, because they know it hurts them to get hit in the mouth hard.
John Hackleman: trained Chuck Liddell The other guy: has a pot belly and looks like he couldn't beat his way out of a wet paper bag. This wasn't really a debate, was it?
Did you just say I have a pot belly? 😅😂🤣 You're trying to get me to take my shirt off so you can oogle my abs, aren't you? You lecherous scoundrel, you!
You're right, it wasn't a debate, it was a discussion. And what does training a UFC champion have to do with whether most self defence instruction is power fantasy? 😊
Hey thanks so much for having me on the show! It was an absolute pleasure talking with you John.
Thank you very much brother, the pleasure was all mine. Hope to chat again soon.

Some of the best self defense advice ever, right there, for so many reasons.

I told him I pulled my punch - I used an Infantry Man hook and feint on my opponent and definitely ring his bell but he was ok bc I was only going 50 percent
I also used some moves George Dillman taught me, the “magneto” was also very effective - levitate your opponent and throw him through a wall

Why are they debating? Lol they seem to mostly agree on everything
This isn't a debate- neither formal, informal, nor polemical. I was invited on the podcast to discuss the concept of martial arts for self defense.
