Thanks for the tips Mick. I'm bringing mine back to health after I got this off my late father. Lovely to see your lad on it. What a great Dad you are as well!
Thank you for showing me how to fix the drive belt I have been putting it off and using my old 56 as a push mower which is not a good idea when the job takes 2 hours and it is a half-hour push each way.
A quality mower Mick. You certainly need drive on one of them. I had an intek engine that kept snapping the pull cord out of my hands, it needed the tappets setting. A good fix Mick, you should sell that for good money, they are well over a grand new. The paint let’s them down though. Great channel, best go in now and see the good lady 👍🏼
Hi there and thanks for all your advice! I'm stuck with a (very old) Harrier 48 (model 219 or 220): I need to replace the bronze bushes from the back roller but can't fit them on on the drivechain side because, on this side, there is an "external groove" added to avoid the wheel to spin (old system, now it seems to be a pin that is screwed on). And this added groove prevents the bush to glide to where it should... Sorry for my english and thanks for the advice. Marc.
Great timing with this vid, I've just taken the carb off a quantum, (same carb) and it has the little tiny spring on choke flap but it wasn't connected and I was wondering if that's all there was connecting the choke and now I know....cheers.
Hey Mike, great video thanks, understand the mower much better now. My problem is slightly different though. The belt is ok, I think the pins that connect the drive shaft to the pulley have gone, so the shaft turns but the pulley doesnt. Any idea where I source the pins and how to fit? Thanks, iain
Thanks very much a great video, as I have just bought a Harrier 56 that needs some TLC and now from your excellent video I know to change the belt as there is no drive. The model I have has ignition start on a key, it turns over but no spark, bought a small battery but still nothing, it starts on the pull cord but not on the key. What could be the issue?
@@themowerman Yes, turns over on the key but not firing the engine, going to replace the spark plug, belt now off thanks to your video and after inspection no teeth on it so well worn. The mower cut the grass without drive.
Thank you for the great video Mick, highly informative indeed. You made the belt change look extremely easy. I actually liked that model of Hayter Harrier 56, they were fairly straightforward. On the later model, the drive was pretty awful, in fact pathetic! I used to run two Hayter 56 mowers, they leave a good finish. The only downfall is the extremely poor grass collection in damp weather. I have been using a Weibang equivalent machine, which is much heavier, but at least it picks up wet grass considerably better. I appreciate the importance of keeping the bag clean so that the air can flow through. I also used to use an Etesia Hydro 80, a highly manoeuvrable machine that was fitted with a roller by an engineering company. The only reason I purchased this machine was to be able to collect wet grass. Sometimes it is much easier to use a walk-behind machine, however, the Etesia was very manoeuvrable. The Hydro 80 basically almost replaced the Hayter Harriers, there were just a few jobs where I needed the Harrier 56 due to narrow gates! Once again thanks for the great video. Roy.
Looks like a 50's Caddy with side skirts! That bigger OHV style in the states are the most powerful briggs engines slapped on a PUSH mower from the factory 6.75HP to 7HP
Hi I was pleased with your video as i had one to do but then realized my 56 is Vari drive and tota blade stop, i removed the bottom vover and i can see the belts but looks a pain to get them off as it looks like i need to remove clutch, have you a video of theodel like mine as mot dure how to get them off Tuesday 7.30pm
Cracking video 👍 What would be your first thoughts on the drive if the front pully isn't spinning ? The drive stopped on a customers 56 , he sent it in and they told him the carb , drive and a few other bits were buggered ! Ran sweet as and it was only the drive at falt, well they conned him out of a grand for a new mower and i took the hayter ! After putting the carb and cables back on and a bit of fuel , 2x pump on the primer and bang it runs ! Just the drive I'm scratching my head at , pins look fine but don't know whats behind them in the engine side .
@@themowerman cheers will pop it off and have a butchers 👍 I know the pins go but they both look intact although I've never seen one go so will check them again .
Hi mick, great video I have a garage with a fair few of these in there, I’m waiting to get the blasting set up working so I can blast the decks, I do find belt change is harder on the 41s much tighter to the body, I just slack the engine off and that gives enough room. I worry if I force it without doing that I’ll damage the belt. But on these as you’ve shown plenty of room. 🙂👍
Hi Mick I’ve watched all your videos and notice that you use the cheap batteries on your dewalt sometimes just wondering if you could do a small video on them or if you could tell me how good they are as I own a landscaping business and use a lot of dewalt tools aswell and need more batteries ?
Great vid, I just bought a 48 for £115, looks like a similar year to yours - works great. Was this a good price to pay? Only issue is the mower’s forward propulsion isn’t working. The roller spins if you lift up the back of the mower so it isn’t touching the ground, but when you put it down and pull the handle in, the mower doesn’t go forward. Is this an easy fix?
Question, I'm not sure cause of the camera angle but is that part of the choke swing hitting the spark plug, it looks like it's rubbing against the spark plug..... Or it's an optical illusion..... Or is that the kill mechanism.
Hi can you help me I have got a hover mower with m120x it turns over but it so hard to put to get it started. It’s like it’s got to much compression thanks Phil
Great choke diagnosis. Something I must keep in mind for myself. Excellent belt information. I must say that I can not imagine naming a machine Hater. Maybe Lover but not Hater. Anyway great video. Love the Riley Boy for sure. You need a fold down bed in the shed.
Your son reminds me of my 14 year old son. I’ve never heard of Smith Magenis Syndrome. I have looked it up and see that there is a genetic test that can be done. My family has dealt with a lot of issues because of my sons personality and nobody seems to know what to do for him because they can’t see what we see. We tried schooling him with no avail. Public, private, Christian and home. Best we can label him is with a severe case of ADD. When you mentioned your sons sleeping habits, I said Bingo! I will need to more research on this and I thank you, Sir, for your videos and for this epiphany!

I am still amazed at how many machines have rollers over there in the U.K.

The kill wire is done via the throttle cable.. and a micro switch on the throttle control panel on top of the carburettor...
