I like Hellboy alot cuz of simple things:
1. Vol.1 is the Vol.1
2 .Consistent
3. no Multi-verse shit and artist re-edition takes.
4. it is lore heavy and makes you ponder deeper in thought
Triatari Ascari Multiverse stuff is fun though.
Just not all the time.
I agree with you overall though.
Hellboy is awesome.
.....what's the problem with the multiverse?
It's kinda a cop out.
Bob Arkham cop out for what?
Hellboys is... consistent. One creator. One design style. Everything there make sense and it's connected.
Yeah I'm gonna read Hellboy, I am completely convinced.
Me too
It's so good. Favorite comic series.
You won’t regret it, they’re really good
Stari,najbolji strip svih vremena,vratio mi je vjeru u 9.umjetnost
Hellboy is epic it combines everything that is good and great in comics. Would've loved Lobster Johnston in a movie.
For me its not only the story lines, folklore and literary references. The art work is brillant. Minimalist yet extremely expressive, allowing for MANY multiple readings and great enjoyment.
Hellboy has always been my favorite comic book character and I loved both of the movie adaptations. Sucks we didn’t get the conclusion to the trilogy with Ron pearlman but I’m excited to see the reboot when it comes out
Thomas G the movie sucked, the old ones were better especially since Ron Perlman did Hellboy. I’ve been a Hellboy fan since I was three years old, & I’m sorry to say this but the reboot of Hellboy movie sucked. The creators were too focused on horror not to forget there was more gore than actual story-factor & the cgi effects were a little cheesy & corny, everything that almost came out of the movie was cliched, it felt like the story & plot couldn’t stand still for one second w/out either jumping to another scene or trying to lure the audience to get ready for the next scene. It was sloppy & overall nothing less than an essay of Hellboy written by a college student who doesn’t know a thing about Hellboy. Ik you didn’t ask for my review of it but I couldn’t stop typing.
what did you think of the new one? I thought it was pretty bad... too many holes in that movie
I love Hellboy, and I love how he was depicted by Ron Perlman in 2004 and 2008
THANK YOU. I don't get why hellboy is so slept on
Because DC & Marvel haven't gotten their hands on it...yet.
@@ulrickennedy5155 God I hope they don't
@@therustedshank9995 They won’t.
I love the HellBoy universe it's probably my very favourite, once I started I could never look back, so far Iv read:
HellBoy, all 12 vol
Plague of frogs
BPRD 46-48
Hell on earth, all 15 vol
& a few of the HellBoy one shots.
try Mignola's take on batman!
Only by wankers John :)
Hellboy is one of my favorite comics of all time! This was a great video and I totally agree,it is pretty easy to jump into. In the 90's when I was first trying to get into comics I wanted to try spiderman or some of the Image comics, but the stories were all over the place and going back and forth through several titles. Reading them was like threading a needle! And then I found Hell boy! I loved this comic that used old folk legends and the work of Lovecraft as plots.
yeah, The Mingolaverse is the most cohesive. it's all generally under his vision. he has all the rules each series has to follow. it's still able to have stories like Pancakes and Hell on Earth coexist. it has diverse tones and themes and still is unified. while it's not the largest universe, or the most diverse, it's makes sense as a universe. which makes the story better. it makes the audience give the universe more suspension of disbelief. since there are laws and principles every single story follows we don't have to keep mental notes on each title and its variations on the laws of that universe. it's just there and we don't have to stress over them.
Well made video. You really get excited to start reading it all. Great hellboy hype vid, good job
Jarne Pauwels thanks!
Jarne Pauwels same here man. I've been sitting on the whole Hellboy series and I'll have some genuine inspiration to start it.
Hardcover Reviews What is the recommended age rating for the series?
Would love to see a breakdown of some of the Hellboy stories
Just ordered Seed of Destruction, can't wait to start this universe
What i like about BPRD and Hellboy is sense of pulp and those old weird tales, when you look at those guys they feel like characthers from those stories, badass, hard boil "i don't have time for this shit" kind of atitude, and no funny costumes, just regular shirt or jacket, cargo pants, cool logo, badge and we are ready to go,BPRD agent can be guy on a bus and thats what i like the most, workin' class dudes
Other stuff like noir atmosphere and themes full of folklore and mythology with a touch of something that gives you to think about when the story is over is what makes this universe most precious of them all
The crooked man should have been in one of the hellboy movies ;-;
The movies didn't really play into the part of hellboy in my opinion. Hellboys atmosphere in the comics was kind of dark, which makes sense considering the circumstances, but the movies were more campy. Throwing the crooked man in there would just be Jarring.
Also the crooked man should be like an episode solo story content
I’ve got good news for you about a new movie coming out
Originally watched the two live action films as well as the two animated ones and then went on to read the Hellboy comics after watching a feature about the influence they had on the animated films on the Blood and Iron DVD. I absolutely adore them. Wake The Devil is probably one of the best comics I've read.
Hellboy comics have some of the best panelling which make them so fun to read. Enjoyed the video. Best day & Best wishes to you & yours.
Nice video. I think one thing that really helps make the art feel cohesive and connected is that I believe Dave Stewart does all the colors. If not all he colors well over 90% of the art. Also I think Wake the Devil Vol 2 might be a better jumping in spot, and then go back and read Vol 1 later. I feel like Mignola was still finding his voice and honing his craft in Vol 1. John Bryne actually did a lot of the writing in Vol 1. Where Vol 2 is where he really finds his voice and crafts his vision for the universe. Like you said the Mignolaverse is amazing because you can literally jump in anywhere, that is a great observation and I think you are dead on! Loved the video!
Mike Mignola is a fantastic artist. Cosmic Odyssey is still one of my absolute faves!!!
I have all 6 volumes of the library editions. Hellboy is my favorite comic series. Glad this video exists.
I agree, this is exactly what I say when I am defending or introducing Hellboy. All that you say here has directly applied to me. Great stuff👍
Great video! This and your ultimate reading guide for Hellboy got me to start reading a character I liked from the movies, but now has become one of my favourite comic book characters. You got a subscriber out of me! Keep up the awesome videos
I didn’t knew much about the comics of Hellboy until I read when he travels to Mexico, buying anthology’s of some related or connected stories is so interesting
666 views? Perfect!
This is on you...
Literally just finished volume 1 of the library edition today along with plague of frogs volume 1 and I started it cause of ur videos on hellboy!
amazing work man, because of this video I'm making the push to start hellboy
Great video!!! I've been a fan of Hellboy ever since it started coming out, and I have most of the Hellboy trades and a huge chunk of BPRD trades, but I've never really thought of this as a "shared universe" until now. I don't know why I never thought of it that way, but you are completely right, it is one of the best shared universes. This video has made me excited about branching off into some of the Hellboy related titles I've never read before.
Also, I totally agree that having fewer people at the helm and fewer titles is a key ingredient to a successful shared universe. That is why I think Valiant, for example, does it so well also.
Don't get me wrong, I'll always have big love for DC and Marvel, but I completely agree that a tighter group of creators and less titles is the better way to go.
I think one of the reasons it's not really though of as a shared universe is that everything connects back to Hellboy in one way or another. I'm probably wording that very poorly, but to organize my thoughts: In the DC universe, you have Wonder Woman and The Question. Will they every meet? They probably have a few times, but neither of their stories really affect one another in the long run. They go about their franchises completely separately and absolutely nothing is changed. Meanwhile, whether it's Witchfinder, Lobster Johnson, Hellboy, or Abe Sapien, they all can be read separate, but their events built on and intersect in one way or another that if you take out one series, a lot of stuff falls apart.
dude you need to get back into this - get a patron going again, I'm not big on giving money away but i enjoy your content and demeanor enough that i would support the show beyond watching ads.
Excellent job. I will definitely be reading Hellboy now.
Nice vid. I recently started buying the Hellboy series in Omnibus editions. Loving it! Though I'm not a fan of most of the artists involved and the writing isn't always the best. Now the creativity and overall universe are awesome.
Fantastic video. I haven't seen many comic videos of this quality outside of IGN or Comic Book Girl.
NFLDude56 wow thank you man!
I think what also helps is that the main story for the Hellboy universe already ended a while ago. You really only need to read BPRD and the main Hellboy title to get the full story and you can buy the omnibus volumes for both at a pretty cheap price.
Just ordered the library edition. So excited to start my Hellboy Journey.
CD project red should make a Hellboy game
I got all Hellboy Library editions save the one that just came out. All those books, but it's all just one amazing story and the art is anything but generic!
Great video its cool because i am in the early stages of writing an making my own comic book universe/company and i share a similar vision and structure to it
That's why Manga is so good too, i am much less likely to be dissappointed by a product when the talent team is consistent.
Great video! I've always loved Hellboy but never got around to reading the books ... until now. Thanks to you and others who have taken the time to list which books a Hellboy newbie should read. I just purchased vol 1, Seed of Destruction and I'm loving it.
I like the Hellboy Universe because in it there is a hell and a Heaven; and Heaven approves of Hellboy.
For anyone out there, download the Dark Horse Comics app and buy the Mangekyo Lobster Johnson story, that's shits funny.
Hey man, great video. I've missed these. Keep up the hard work.
I've only read the main Hellboy series but it's fantastic, i want to get into BPRD
If you finished the main HellBoy series, then go straight into "Plague of frogs", then "hell on earth".
Marvel = avengers, dc = justice league, dark horse comics = hellboy, alien, and predator.
Yes dark horse comics also made the alien and predator comics.
RedPanda07 and Judge Dredd, I do believe that the Dark Horse is undermined due to Marvel and DC but in opinion is so much better
Dark horse also does all the valve comics
@@mr.sound-bot5513 judge dredd is published by 2000ad, not dark horse
They also did Star Wars: Clone Wars from 2003-2005
Mike Mignola is like the Kevin Feige of the Hellboy universe
Exept he is better
Great video. This lore heavy universe is like old school EC monster comics of old but with a twist. Reading Hellboy 1-12 is an epic journey. This makes me want pick up the rest of those one-shots I am missing. Cheers, thanks for the vid.
I wouldn't say Lovecrafts cosmic horror isn't dryed up, we've seen his some of his style in other mediums, but Lovecrafts actual stories like call of cthulhu, or Dagon, haven't been sdopted into video game's or movie's.the only story that has been adopted to movies is Re-animator.
To me the Hellboy universe is like the Cosmere. You can read the different series separately but if you read them all you get that fun "oh hey it's that guy" feeling.
Hell yeah for hell boy
The fact that Cthulu is now found as plushies in our children's bedrooms isn't scary to you? ... ... the monster under the bed is an elder god...
This is one of my favorite comic universes of all time, every story is expertly crafted with great horror occult and pulp textures throughout
what is pulp?

I am currently reading the comics and due to all the the reviews I’ve watched like this and other ones that compare it to the movies. I understand that their are some pretty big differences but that doesn’t make me wanna stop since it sounds like such a fun story! Also it has gotten me to wanna possibly read h.p lovecraft
"The well has been mined dry" 🤔
I Never Read Any of DC Comics' or Hellboy's Comics
But They're Movies are Really Fukin' Awesome
Mostly The DC Animated Movies
Man I loved the graphic novels, and the first two movies with Ron Perlman. Just needs to stay true to its creators vision, it's accessible.
That was one of your best ever vids, really good stuff. I guess it's only fair I take the plunge now...
It’s true my god hellboy’s short stories r so addicting to read
I love Marvel and DC more because I grew up with characters like Spider-Ma, Batman, superman, Hulk, Iron Man, Daredevil, the fantastic four, Ghost Rider, wolverine and the X-Men but the lore of Hellboy is really interesting to me Man
cthulu what about herbert west
Guillermo del torro end of conversation. No other super hero movie has an academy award winning caliber director
Let's hope the new movie actually fits... The old two were... they fit perfectly in a happy meal.
The Library editions are a great place to start off.
This is awesome. Thanks so much.
Okay, this legit made me want to check out Hellboy now. :')
Hellboy is probably the most underrated comic book character ever
HELLBOY GAME BOARD. Kickstarter proyect. By mantic games. You look it now. more 130 miniatures. Monsters. You can add on.
Now that is one greatass intro bro
A little help here... Which will you suggest has the best artwork among the hellboy universe along with the story ofcourse
We need an abe sapien origin movie on the big screen
Very well done. I'm not a comic book man. But Hellboy might make me one.
Does he get his eye back though!?
As of B.P.R.D The Devil You Know #10, he does not get the eye back.
@@malcomalexander9437 ... so...Hellboy is big boss, confirmed?! :-P
he gets his eye back at the very very last shot before he gets in the iron maiden and creates a new world with his blood
great video mate :)
I love hellboy
agreed with second being spawn
I had read up to Darkness Calls, and kinda took a break for a few years, then the whole series had been reprinted in the omnibus forms in chronological order. I’m a bit pissed off with it because part of the fun with Hellboy for me was being surprised at where we were and having to lay out the timeline in my head. It lent more to the idea of how HB is a legendary figure that’s been around for so long and seen so much. Putting it in order feels kinda distilled and takes the myth away.
Hellboy is the only comic series I’ve actually read because everything else I’m interested in has 30 godzillian timelines and universes and reboots. Hellboy is artist owned, so beautiful, and so well told.
It is sad because the comic is unknown out of the United States since there hasn't have the attention deserved the first time I knew about it was through the first movie then I tatted to read everything I had access to and yes it's amazing my favorite character in the bprd was Roger the homunculus
Good stuff. Baba Yaga is pronounced with the last syllable stressed - ['baba: Yag'A]
I liked it, but I thought it was a little short and ended abruptly. Overall, I liked it a lot though and those would be my only two gripes.
How about Baltimore and Joe Golem? Both are excellent Mignola works.
Sir Nigel Gaunt Neither take place in the HB umiverse though.
Totally agree.
Been wanting to start reading Hellboy for years now but never got round to it for whatever reasons. I bought the first volume yesterday but I have yet to read it. Hoping for the best.
3 years later... How was it?
So where should I start with Hellboy??
Hi, can I read BPRD Hell on Earth HCs without any prior reading of anything from Mignolaverse?
Excellent video!
Great video! Loved it.
One thing I WILL disagree is "accessibility". Yes, it is same vision and etc.
But when you try to read this chronologically (within Hellboy universe) then good luck because there is no "Hellboy #1, Hellboy #234" , there is "Hellboy sneed of distruction", "Hellboy in heck" and "BPRD wake the devil", etc.
There is no big ass TPB with ALL of these stories collected into one chrono order. At least for some time. For next like 10-30 years at least.
So fella can sorta reach the "end" when reading Hellboy in "Hellboy", without knowing that there is BPRD follow up with him coming from Hell to die once again.
Compare this to Invincible or Spawn.
And no I don't want "reading order" by how books came out. I want from beginning to the end. And sometimes some short stories don't even get reprinted in one TPB.
Another great vid HC
That was excellent!
Subscribed, Great channel.
I think mayan myth would fit in. But idk that's up to him.
The greatest is always often overlooked. If it weren't, it would attract artists with bad intentions

I'm So Lovenly Glad DC Comics
Brought Hellboy & TMNT in Injustice 2 (Ultimate Edition)
Will you ever make more videos
Is the BPRD story line as good as the Hellboy stories/library editions?
Methni I would say sometimes better
Comics Guide101 guess I know what I'm gonna be reading then.
I think the story is fantastic but damn... the art really falls short. Hellboy has some of the most jaw-dropping art ever. Period. B.P.R.D. is passable... sometimes
@@HardcoverReviews cam you make a top 10 list ? So I go n read em:3
I’m sorry but I like Hellboy A WHOLE LOT MORE than Marvel & DC comics.
This singel vision and overseer you’re taking about.
Is actually also the edge manga and anime have.
Since there is (generally) only one creative mind behind it.
So plot holes and inconsistencies are nowhere to be found.
No art style shifts, no story revisions etc.
And the rights of the characters and story, always belong to the artist himself.
So companies can’t get involved and change shit.
I think if companies like marvel would also implement such a systems.
That it would greatly profit them and bring in a lot of new readers.
Just look at hellboy or dragon ball z
One piece Naruto etc
All these series are fucking awesome.
Pay some attention marvel 😎
