- Documentary following 28-year-old British Muslim Mehreen Baig as she explores the experiences of women in different Muslim communities.
As a 28-year-old British Muslim woman, Mehreen Baig finds that everyone seems to have an opinion about how she should live her life - the clothes she should wear, where she should go out and who she should date. Half the time she is told she's being held back by her religion, and the other half that she isn't religious enough. Sometimes it feels like she just can't win. As she faces the prospect of marriage and finally moving out from her parents' house, she wants to know whether it's possible to be a strong, independent woman and a good Muslim in modern Britain.
Mehreen encounters the women on the front line of this debate. She meets the young women who claim Islam is a feminist religion that empowers them and a woman who has rejected the religion because she believes it's inherently sexist. She uses a specialist Muslim dating app to date a selection of young Muslim men, finding out what they really want from a wife, and attends a Sharia council to witness women petitioning to divorce their husbands.
Along the way, Mehreen discovers what the Islamic texts really say about women's rights and discovers how widely women's experiences vary across different Muslim communities.

Instead of imposing guardianship rules on women to "protect" them from the vices of men (if i am understanding the context correctly), teach men to be principled to begin with.

Not because he's done anything against you, but because he wants to protect you. He wants to minimize pain in your life and as an elder, his experience outweighs yours.

I have been an off and on again Muslim man living in America for around 50 years give or take, I am now 61 years old, just to be clear, I was born here in The United States, so since I was 11 my family and I have been introduced to Islam, thanks to my older brothers Alhamdulilah. 8:02 is a brilliant example of how all of these defenses of Islam simply make no sense. What the Muslim woman said was completely illogical, even down to the syntax of her sentence. Let's go back and look:
The Former Muslim woman says that the Quran says that men can hit their wives lightly. She clearly explains how allowing men to hit women at all is problematic. You don't really need to do this when speaking to a rational person. Any system that says that men can discipline their wives by lightly hitting them is clearly problematic.
What does the Muslim woman say? "You can pick out that statement and use it to your advantage but that's not Islam's fault. That's humans being assholes"
Let's put it in another context and see how that statement is and how nonsensical her defense of Islam is:
Donald Trump writes a book of guidance and advice and in that book, he says that men can lightly hit their wives if they are disobedient. If someone said that the book was bad/ sexist and should not be followed, would we say that they were cherry-picking? Would we say that they are picking statements from his book and using it to their advantage to unfairly judge Trump as a sexist? And if men who read this book were actually hitting their wives for disobedience, would we say, "It's not Trump's fault, it's humans being assholes"?

I made an assertion: Much of the sexism that Muslim women face is a result of Islam's teachings.
You made the opposite assertion:
The sexism that Muslim women face does NOT come from Islam's teachings.
I not only made my assertion but I explained it how I believe my assertion is true.
You didn't. You simply made an assertion. You didn't explain how and why you, me, or anyone else should believe your assertion over mine.
And something tells me that if you were asked to explain your assertion about Islam's teachings, you wouldn't be able to and you'd probably give some abstract reasoning like "classical arabic is so complex and everything is open to interpretation" etc. I know because these are the same tactics I would succumb to when I believed in Islam. And they're the same ones I've heard time and time again after coming to my senses and realizing that Islam simply isn't true.
You being a convert means that you're statistically likely to leave Islam eventually. It's very common. My advice to you is that if you want to keep that from happening, don't engage in debates or discussions about Islam, especially when you aren't actually capable of debating and only capable of making assertions.

I'm trying to imagine if every girl and woman had the love and protection like this from their fathers. I don't think a lot of females understand how fortunate they are to have that. Her father seems quite balanced and fair towards her.
in order to be a tolerant, non homophobic, non sexist, non violent Muslim, you have to actively ignore Islam's teachings and convince yourself that the teachings are no longer to be followed AND that they were totally justified "back then" (pretty sure execution by stoning for any crime less than murder is never OK regardless of time and place)
You also have to ignore the part of Islam that clearly states that it's teachings are applicable until the end of time and that editing, updating, and also ignore the teaching that states that renovating/updating/modernizing Islam is not only one of the easiest ways to anger god but that it also goes against the entire premise of Islam's existence.
Islam's god clearly states that he presented his guidance to humanity twice before (the torah and the bible) but that people corrupted his message based on their own whims so he sent Islam as his final word, never to be changed or edited by humans again.
(reminder: responding to what I just wrote by saying "but all religions are sexist/violent/homophobic" is completely irrelevant and doesn't refute or address the point I've just made)

Instead of saying/showing that the Quran doesn't say that, she pointed out that Muhammad didn't do it. That's a strawman fallacy. "But did the prophet beat his wives? Never" Even if that's true, that doesn't refute the claim that the Quran allows it. If I say that people are allowed to punch kittens on Tuesdays, and I personally don't punch kittens at all, that doesn't refute the fact that I allowed it for other people. This is unfortunately how many defenses of Islam's scriptures are. Rather refuting the existence of permissibility laws in Islam, they point to the (supposed) fact that Muhammad didn't engage in that which he made permissible.
Every religion supports this. It is in the Bible as well and fundies practice this. The thing is you dont have to throw out the religion because of a text.

At 25:00, I don't think this is about Islam. My mom was the same way with me when I was still living at home with my parents as an adult, and I'm a fourth-generation white Canadian woman. All of my ancestors are white, as far as I know. My parents are nonreligious, but their ancestors were Christian. She would always get angry at me if I didn't phone her at least once during the evening because she was always paranoid that I would get kidnapped. She'd be angry when I'd come home at 9pm without phoning her. In the winter she wouldn't allow me to go out past 4pm because it was dark outside when I was a teenager. I didn't have any friends, so by outside, I mean going to the local library.
Just because a particular sexist teaching or belief exists elsewhere doesn't refute the assertion that it's a teaching of Islam.
Let's say I owned a company and it was my company policy that people named Eric would get a pie thrown at them every Tuesday.
Let's say there's another company that has the exact same policy.
The fact that company B also has that policy against guys named Eric doesn't disprove that when guys at my company named Eric get hit with a pie, it's part of my company's policy. Just because another company mistreats guys named Eric, that doesn't disprove the fact that MY company mistreats guys named Eric.

WHat a beautiful, honest, open and good hearted young woman. I hope she finds real happiness. I find it hard to accept any licence for a man to beat his wife, however lightly, or under any circumstances whatsoever. Perhaps a Muslim might argue that the Koran spoke to people in a way that was understandable given the times, culture , context etc. I believe, at least , that it did give rights to women that were generally not available to women in that place and time, so in that sense, it was progressive. Mehreen can interpret the Koran herself and decide what it means to her in this day and age. Sje has to separate the words of the Koran from the culture that allows her well-meaning and loving Dad to keep her at home til shes 28 and under his thumbe. I find it striking first that she is not aware of what her Book says about women. If you are Christian, wouldn't you have read the Bible at least once? Islam is a religion which produces probably one of the most extremists in its interpretations and probably too many misconceptions from non-believers, too. So, even more in that case, IMO, if you subscribe to something as "controversial" as Islam, you would need to know it inside out to be its advocate, wouldn't you?
As someone who was raised Catholic, and met hundreds, if not thousands of Catholics and other types of Christian...personally, I've found that most of them had not/have not read the bible. Reading the bible cover to cover is what made me become an atheist.

I've never met a Christian who has read the Bible. Being born into a religion means everyone just blindly follows what they're told without question or research. It's the same with Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, and so on. It's sad and the cycles need to stop.

Recently I understood what has been happening in Islam is that the clause in nikah form the right of woman to ask for divorce is taken away from women and all families accept it quietly and even the Mullas don’t except to tell women there rights which is being taken away and they think it’s an Islamic law and it’s right. I am not sure some of the natural instincts are religion related. I have no religion, but I feel like it's my duty to care about the well being of my wife and my mother. It doesn't mean I belittle them, but as a man I have the protector's instinct of putting myself first in line in case of danger. Is that so bad?
Not everyone needs a religion to RELY on to develop and/or sustain and moral compass or ideology of right, wrong, or manhood/womanhood.
I subscribe to no religion, but there is wisdom to be found in various religious texts. I’ve learned from them and most importantly, learned from life and socializing.
I don't think that's bad, it's only natural to want to protect your loved ones. When this is taken too far, it becomes abusive, controlling behavior. I escaped an abusive relationship almost a year ago, and my ex did not allow me to visit friends or family because he was insanely jealous. If I didn't immediately respond to one of his texts or I missed one of his calls, he would blow up my phone because he was "worried". As long as you know a healthy level of protectiveness, you should be fine.

This is a very controversial topic in the youth.
Your faith gives you a position ( a high position) it is part of your identity. You can be beautiful, young and independent and be a Muslim woman. In the youth we expect all things to be easy and your own innocence of the world doesn’t allow you to see all the dangers of the world. The people that have no one wished they had one call from a parent that cares for them. Without the guidelines of our family the youth would be lost.

The hijaab was obviously a rule created by men to keep their women covered to prevent temptation from other men. It was thrown in religion to make it make sense for the women. And if by any chance I missed his call he will call my husband and ask about me. This is everyday story and Alhumdulillah he calls me atleast 3 to 5 times a day though I live in another country and 10000 miles away from him 😭

@@gamere105ek2 I’m surprised at your poor judgment. My dad loves me the most . There is nothing sooo precious to him than my good health and my happiness. He was the one who took care of me from the day I born . He used to drop me off to my office at his retirement age used to drive to drop me off and pick me up when I asked him. Till now he is the one will keep on sending me gifts from overseas on Birthdays and special days . In my culture this is how fathers / elder brothers look after their daughters/ sisters and try to keep them safe from all the hardships in the world . It depends on the person how s/he finds it some might find it too much interference or loss of freedom but for me this makes me feel more proud to be cared and adored by a loving and caring father. My dad is a very responsible person and he is taking care of my GMA too who lives in the same house with my parents for all her life and she is at her 90s now.

Some people here don’t see this type of parenting as a bad thing when the children are still kids, it’s when they’re grown adults and have their own independence that it becomes an issue. Depending on where you’re from I would be concerned that if he doesn’t hear from you he then calls your husband to see how you are, and that he actually asks if you feed your husband and children, as if you needed a reminder to do that, but I’m guessing from what you’ve told me that’s normal for father’s in your culture to do that. You also used the 😭 emoji, which I perceived as you being upset and wishing your father didn’t do this, apparently I misunderstood that. Here it very’s family to family really, not so much a cultural thing, but a personal preference really. Some father’s aren’t involved at all, and some put in the effort. I’ve mostly seen all the effort into childcare being on the mother’s, and the mother’s calling their grown adult children to see if they’re safe and healthy.

I thought that this lady's father was both extremely protective (knowing the ways of the world) AND extremely lenient for a man of his culture and faith. She should consider herself extremely fortunate. However, I noticed that the ladies of African decent seemed to have a more 'modern' outlook on Islam being very well educated and independent as well .. CHOOSING their religious virtues instead of having them be imposed upon them as is often the case in less 'developed' cultures. So before marriage, she is under the guardianship of her father. When she’s married , the reigns are passed from her father to her husband. So a single, unmarried woman living by herself goes directly against the Qurans teachings. On top of that, the Quran clearly states that going against its teachings disrupts god’s master plan for humanity

Islam does not forces anyone to marry, marraige is not Fard(mandatory/must) but it is Sunnah ( you may ), if anyone wants to be fully independent then probably should not marry, marraige and independence does not go together, just an example (a husband comes home every 2 am or 3 am and wife is waiting at home, he can say i am independent even i we are married and vice versa) so there is limits to independence, independence means independence and no one can hold back. Marraige is compromise for both otherwise it will not work, one can be independent and can be good muslim too. But again every religion has some boundries.
Right now the only thing women can do is to try to educate them self much as possible to be able to not depend on anyone, no matter they are married or not.
In the islam women will be equal in the moment when man will understand that making lunch and taking care of the house and the kid is for the both equally.
If qenders are equal in the Islam then call a boy to be a nanny for your kids, or put a lady to be a driver for the family.
