Join us for a discussion about the exhibition Aíme Césaire: Poetry, Surrealism, Négritude focusing on the remarkable Martinique poet and politician who founded the “Négritude” Movement. In this lecture, the exhibition’s co-curators Bob Devin Jones, Founder and Artistic Director of Studio@620, and Peter Tush, Dalí Museum Curator of Education, explore Césaire’s accomplishments as a writer, and demonstrate how Surrealism enabled him to develop his ideas about “Négritude,” anti-colonialism, and Black identity.

Bob Devin Jones was born in 1954 in Los Angeles, California. He was raised in Southern California. He studied acting at Loyola Marymount University and completed graduate work at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and abroad at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. After graduating, he traveled the country as an actor and director. Los Angeles remained his home base for most of this time.
In 1991, he started writing plays. He spent eight months in Ashmont working with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and then lived in Seattle, Washington for two years. He first visited St. Petersburg in 1997 to direct a Harlem Renaissance rendition of the play Miss Julie. While there, he met his life partner, Jim, and decided to settle in the area.
He has made his living acting, directing, and supervising the Studio@620 as artistic director. He mentors young directors, writers and visual artists in his spare time.

Peter Tush is the Curator of Education of The Dalí Museum, where he has worked for several decades.Tush has his Undergraduate degree in Art History from New College in Sarasota and his Masters in Art History from the University of South Florida. He is a key interpreter of the Dalí collection and special exhibitions. He trains the Dalí docents, scripts the audio guides, directs Dalí school programming and student exhibits, and works with the curatorial team to develop special exhibitions.
Over the years, Tush has presented talks on a wide range of Dalí-related topics including Surrealism and women, surreal gastronomy, Dalí and Hollywood, and Dalí’s Catalan heritage. In addition, since 1994, Tush has been a co-host of the program Step Outside on WMNF 88.5fm Tampa. A showcase for “Strange and Beautiful” music, the eclectic genre-busting program features obscure psychedelia, avant-rock, free jazz, 4th world music, electronic experimenters, and contemporary chamber and orchestral composers.
