  • As we pause to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, we look closer at one of the vessels of that attack. The Japanese Midget Submarine “A” Class. This one, the HA-8 was not involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor, but 5 of her sister submarines were. Join us as we look further into this vessel and the role she played on the date that shall live in infamy.

One of those mini subs, same type I saw at the Navy Museum at the Naval Base on the US Territory of Guam. Had fun and even had a ride on the tourist submarine. Good vacation. NO markup like Honolulu, but on the Pacific and beautiful and big hotels, restaurants, and even Native Islanders who are very nice and hospitable.

    All subs are accounted for.
    Ha 19 Fredericksburg tx
U.S.S. Monaghans sub, buried as part of a pearl harbor sub base pier.
One found 1960 in keehi lagoon and now resides at the former naval academy in etajima.
A three piece sub found in 1992 ( possibly first found off eva 1950-51 and moved by the U.S. Navy ) now located beyond the entrance of pearl.
The U.S.S. Wards sub also found off the entrance of pearl harbor in 2002.

Seem to recall several mini submarines on Sub base New London while attending Basic Submarine School in 1975. One Japanese and another German I believe. Perhaps a Seehund? Is this the same Japanese one?

Yes. This was on display on the base proper for decades. It was moved to the museum grounds once this museum facility was built in 1986.

The turtles were sunk, but why, is the question that never seems to be asked, why was not the navy ordered to leave harbour to engage in battle with the mother ship (s)?

What navy? They just got bombed, and whatever ships *weren't* hit were busy enough as it was with helping to fight fires, picking up survivors, and providing medical aid.
Also, what motherships? Motherships for what? Obviously, the answers would've been "the aircraft carriers", and "the hundreds of airplanes that just attacked Pearl Harbor", respectively, because when you've just gotten bombed and torpedoed halfway to hell by hundfeds of aircraft that appeared seemingly out of nowhere and without warning, the *last* thing on anyone's mind would be to go running off in random directions outside the harbour on the off chance that there *might* be enemy submarines somewhere out there.
Actually, even if they'd *known* that there were submarines outside the harbour, that'd just be another reason to remain in port and focus of salvage and rescue efforts.
