I spent 8 years in Australia and loved it. That said, while we generally pay more taxes in Europe, combining work and parenting is much easier in here as you get either free or heavily subsidized childcare. I had plenty of friends in the Australian middle class who could only put their kids under 6 in childcare part-time and/or a few days a week. So one of the parents usually ended up not working full time, lowering their wage and professional growth. You'll find more stay home mums there than here (nothing wrong with that, as long as you're not feeling forced to). Of course, past a certain salary threshold that problem goes away.

Actually if you guys google it thier are only 2 states in Australia that ambulance is free. Queenland and Tasmania, I lived in NSW 6years ago paying my ambulance insurance but when we moved to Queensland we found out that ambulance is free my hubby experienced twice picked up by ambulance and never been charged. Australia got everything it just depends what states or areas you wanna live. Good luck on your journey cheers!

Yes these people were out on so many things it was funny. Tax isn’t 20%. It’s 32% plus Medicare levy’s. Then we have stats. Each state has its own laws and state taxes. Plus I always love the urban myth of weather and beach. As if it’s always hot and we are always at the beach. Forgetting all the southern states get as cold as the U.K. in winter and no one is down the beach. Even in summer while beaches are busy I wouldn’t say the entire population is at one.

Fruit and veg is seasonal and the prices are inflated recently due to world events.
Capsicums were usually around $2.99 per kilo pre-pack bag and tomatoes were usually also $2.99-$3.99 in season...sometimes cheaper.
Mushrooms used to lower to around $6.00 per kg too and I personally bought some last shopping for $5.98kg.
The key is don't always shop at the big supermarkets (Coles and Woolworths) for fresh produce and meats. They are okay for alot of the packaged foods but going to the smaller chains can be a big saver.

Sometimes it's not even about shopping local, just not always going to Coles and Woolworths.
Coles and Woolworths tomatoes and capsicum are priced at phenomenally high prices and I just won't buy them.
I live in South Australia so I hit up Romeo's Foodland or a dedicated fruit and veg store where I've been paying $4.98 kg for tomatoes and $2.98 kg for red capsicum...green capsicum for some reason is $3.98 even though they are the same thing.
I haven't bought beef from Coles or Woolworths for over a decade as it is priced too high consistently and I haven't bought sliced hams and other deli meats there for the same reason.

Talking about beer glass sizes, the first time I went to Broken Hill (where Mad Max was filmed) which is the start of the outback in western New South Wales, I noticed everyone drinking beer were using middy glasses. This is a size smaller than schooner glasses. My friend who who lived there explained that they drink from smaller glasses because it is so hot, your beer doesn’t get warm as quick as it would in a bigger glass.

Late to the comments., and from Melbourne in the state of Victoria. Travel in Melbourne is easy. We have the most extensive tram system in the world. The train system is good and very cheap due to a recent new price system. eg. We travelled from Wodonga , on the border with New South Wales, to Melbourne as retired pensioners for a little less than four dollars one-way for a four hour trip of hundreds of kilometres .Bus services are OK. The food may have been expensive due to the expansive flooding Australia has suffered. Crops (and towns) were washed badly affected.. Only today was I able to buy my first carton of soy-based ice-cream in a long time because the floods down the Eastern states destroyed the crops. Also we try to shop for in-season fruit and vegetables. Your emphasis on outdoor activity was mainly centred on the beaches. We also have MANY excellent, beautiful and interesting huge forests and big parks with associated activities including those on rivers and lakes.

Most people found that UK is in fact 2 countries - London and non-London. In Australia, you will find most cities are similar. The quality of living does not differ much from Brisbane to Sydney and to Perth.
In Uk, many towns are so poor outside London and the standard is even lower than Poland. The only reason why stay in Uk is to work in financial services in London. For the rest of the industries, Australia is far better, in particular for the medical fields. If you are working as the doctor in NHS, you should consider migrating to Australia.

Thanks interesting. As someone who has lived and worked in both countries a few of my impressions you may not agree with. At least in the cities we Australians would possibly be described as more "woke" than UK and certainly US. Heard a US culture warrior go off about Qantas and Virgin paying respects to the traditional owners of the land when they were landing - hate to think if he knew that "welcomes to country" are universal at many meetings. Again in the public sector as a Senior Manager I earnt about 2.5 times what my EA did - but in the UK it was 5 times. Not in private sector but in Australian public sector less huge variations. Maybe more egalitarian - in Australia everyone called me by my First Name - in UK was shocked to be called "Sir" or "Mr" by staff like security guards and cleaners. Told them not to - but they found it odd/difficult. Again you may not agree but I think our politics is so much more "grown-up" than UK and US even though it can be brutal - we have a few, but generally, less nutters. Think compulsory and preferential voting helps, (My wife has just got a letter saying she did not vote in the State Election and will be fined - she did and has to send a stat dec in to avoid it). I have both passports but even though it cost 300% more I would give up my UK one before my Australian. To me the only disadvantage of living here, as you recognise, is that we are a long way from anywhere - but you get used to 12-21 hour flights.

@@rafae5902 True we are a natural resources economy - though in terms of tertiary products and services our educational exports are amongst the largest in the world. Health is also big. This resources reliance and a small population means that efforts to increase manufacturing have not been that successful - there is no domestic car production now in Australia despite years of government investment since WW2. The Government is hoping buying and part building nuclear powered submarines might be a stimulant but personally I doubt it. By "grown-up" I suppose I mean the culture wars are less virulent here. And we do do not have the hard core Brexiteers idea of putting the "great" back into Great Britain. We know our place as a middle ranked but affluent nation unlike some who send aircraft carriers half way around the world but have to borrow the planes on them from the USA even though S Korea and Japan have larger air forces and Singapore more up to date ones. They arrived checked me out then drove me back to Kempsey Hospital another 30 minutes away and then they had to drive all the way back to Laurieton, the hospital did all the checks CT scans, Ex rays, blood tests and all that and gave me a ham sandwich and an orange juice. I was there from 11:30am until 11:30pm and it didn't cost me a cent.
Maybe it's because I've worked all my life for the past 40 years paying the Medicare levy of 3% percent of my wages each week and these people haven't I'm not sure? If you work hard in Australia you will be rewarded if you don't then don't blame anyone else, it's as simple as.

When you take cost of living, healthcare, supermarkets weekly shop etc.. actually it's about even the cost of living. The UK has significantly more culture, history, much better architecture, just more going on and substance from my experience. But Australia has the weather advantage(though no Ozone layer), year round beach life and of course much more space when it comes to almost everything from houses to leisure activities. It's actually kind of bizarre... If I'm young, in 20s I'd take the UK as you have Europe on your doorstep it's so much more buzzy and exciting in general.. but when you marry, have a family, work life balance, Australia is an absolute no brainer, it's an amazing lifestyle. However when I'm older, retirement age... I'd move back to the UK if you have the money.. the history, architecture, culture in the counties.. living in the Cotswold, Surrey, Kent etc is absolutely breathtaking and rewarding. If you dont have the money then 100% stay in Australia of course.
Basically it depends what you are looking for. Whenever I leave the UK, i always come back appreciating it more and more. Despite it's pitfalls and there are many, it has soul and a distinct character you just cant find anywhere else (for me at least).
I'd describe Australia as an SUV that can do everything is practical, makes your life more comfortable and it'll just be a good time all round. Living in the UK it's like having a sports car, mostly annoying, not always practical, everyone thinks you're a dickhead but gives you a buzz like nothing else can.
When the ☀️ does shine it (on special occasions) I always say I wouldnt want to be anywhere else.

We also do not have to pay a TV tax! Yes, it can be expensive to travel, but Asia is close by and is very cheap for us Aussies. I honestly enjoy travelling Asia far more than Europe. In Europe, you either get a pompous French person that doesn't like the fact that you do not speak their language or having to keep guard of your phone so it doesn't get stolen, or a combo of both. Two Items - Ambulance charges vary from state to state - Health care n Australia is administrated via each state government and not the federal government - the cost is funded federally only. An ambulance in Queensland and the state of Tasmania are free - others states charge an individual fee - pensioners are free in each state.
Chocolate- Being an Australian and traveled to Europe many times for months, I do not like European chocolate its soft and oily texture, when I was there my first time, I spat it out is was so awful -and refuse to buy it, I prefer Australian Chocolateers- suggest you try a private chocolate shop then supermarket varieties - there are over 20 chocolate manufactures in Australia besides the supermarket variety

And things cost more to start with. 4: Urban myth alert. We do not live on beaches. It is not a beach lifestyle. These people are exaggerating. Most of those people on the beach will be on holiday or backpackers. 5: It gets cold. Very cold. And wet. And foggy. We are that big that the weather up north is totally different from that down south. Sorry most of these things said are ‘through the eyes of a tourist type stuff’ and not everyday life. In the South there are not many people going to beaches between April and October. It’s far too windy and cold except for diehards. Same with BBQs.
