Joe, keep in mind most solar installs are grid tie and don't work when the grid is down. You have to have additional interlock switches set up to prevent solar from back feeding the grid and possibly electrocuting line workers. If you want solar off grid, you need to manually disconnect from the grid, which may not be doable due to code regulation in your area.
My 9 solar panels have interlock. Oh, and give me credit on my electric bill, and home battery. I was ripped off by installer $$ tho they did do a good job.
one thing Texans don't have to worry much about is code regulations. I'm pretty certain Joe looked into this, as thousands of Texans have. Lack of regulation is part of what got them in the polar vortex mess in the first place.
@@squirlmy unfortunately general regulations, or lack thereof, are different from the NEC...all cities in Texas follow some recent version of the national electrical code.

Hey Joe, another part to consider for these battery videos is Micro grids, i work for an energy company and the plan now is to take the fringes of the network and disconnect them from the main grid to cut down on infrastructure and maintenance costs, so this would potentially service dozens of customers or more per micro grid. Large scale batteries like this will play a massive role in regional communities in the future.
Makes sense; residential needs are generally very different than commercial or industrial. The most annoying thing about off-grid or grid-tie setups is the peak power for cooking if you want to avoid fossil fuel use entirely. That's where micro grids come in. The biggest problem I have right now is that 90-99% of the grid is dumb as a box of rocks and has no method of communicating past, current, or future loads to the grid, micro or regional. In fact, if done improperly, a lot of people would be screaming their heads off about privacy and government espionage of the populace. But that's the problem I think needs solving foremost: homes should be able to track their energy usage and present the grid with a historical and future projection. This sort of communication should be of an specification that is open and international. (So, like IEEE perhaps...?) But that circles back to the most age old problem in secure computing; authentication is required for security. Who holds the keys? And to what? There's low level communication links to secure, medium level tunnels to secure, and high level accounting to secure. Game development demonstrates why the client should never be trusted. Then we have the Vehicle to Grid infrastructure to deal with; with 50A AC feeds and 200A DC feeds; and all of them are predominantly one way and just as dumb as the grid about who is where and being billed how. For example; most car computers have no idea what their own license plate reads; but they know their VIN. Current chargers are dumb pilot signals purely for safety; all the billing side is done at a terminal charger-side, with a relay to disconnect the cable leading to the vehicle. Good luck getting a charger that supports a billing network on private property; chargepoint's contracts are out of reach unless it's a condo or apartment building. And even those aren't two-way yet, when the grid needs energy in an emergency, it has no way to ask the vehicles to discharge. And yet again; we have an authentication issue. Whom can request such a thing? We definitely want hospitals and other medical facilities to be able to do so, but I'd be rather angry to find my vehicle's battery being discharged to keep a refinery hot during an outage, preventing it from having to shut down for a week. That should be their storage problem, not mine. Sorry for the meandering reply; but you seemed like someone who might stand to benefit from the free ideas.
Cool info on the future of microgrids! I can see where it makes a lot of sense! Decentralization is easier with wind, solar, and maybe even small modular fission reactors, so it follows that keeping hundreds of miles of transmission lines going might prove to be less efficient than multiple microgrids.
@@SLLabsKamilion Have it your way. Let's just say it's _less than conducive_ to typical internet banter. I would try and find more concise veins of through and work on those to make a compelling argument, than whatever that thing was.
The grid failure in Texas wasn't inevitable or an accident, it was deliberate negligence on part of both the companies, the regulators and the powers that be. (Edit: To be specific, the power companies were provided guidelines on how to prepare for conditions like these-they didn't).
Yes, it was a lot of the natural gas infrastructure failing in the cold that made the grid fail. Even if the power plants had be weatherized, the fuel supply would still have been a problem.

@@travcollier Totally agree, I feel like Matt beats Joe to the scoop because he doesn't do the research to look for the downsides or potential issues. I also think he seems like a nice guy, but his videos have a lot more hype than science.
well, hydrogen is easily one of the most dense energy media we know of, it slaps lithium ion out of the sky and in terms of large energy storage its unparraleled even now, no doubt with more research into storage and more infrastructure it will an extremely large use case, most noteably trucks, theoretically hydrogen can be compressed to the point the electrons form an ocean, increasing its density to 0.7kg/L at a density of 120MJ/kg vs lithium ions 0.3MJ/kg theres a reason just 5kg of poorly compressed hydrogen can easily rival BEVs with 1 tonne batteries in terms of range, the infrastructure isnt there but neither was gasoline infrastucture when ICE vehicles first came onto the scene. Im convinced anyone that puts down hydrogen has done essentially 0 research on the topic and forms their opinions around elon musks, HEV could very easily compete and outmatch BEVs in range, its a matter of refueling and use, theres not much more a HEV could do that a BEV cant, but when we get to trucks, a cross continent trip with a BEV would be one of the most inefficient things you could imagine, the sheer weight of the battery would a very significant part of the cargo not to mention the recharging "just set up battery swaps" then the system needs additional infrastructure, just like hydrogen. the base 2 components of hydrogen are water and electricity, and in the extremely likely abundant energy future, not using hydrogen for larger vehicles would be a joke, much like how using them for small EVs is a joke today. TLDR: hydrogen is a lot better than you realise and will almost certainly be the future for larger vehicles that operate outside of constant available electricity (planes, cargo ships, trucks) basically everything that makes the economy go round

My personal favorite was his video about fungus-based building insulation in which he failed to mention water performance or exposure issues which IS THE #1 CONCERN WITH ANY BUILDING TECHNOLOGY. Yes, I can already see the utility companies investing untold millions into extra battery storage just in case something happens. Because we've seen how good they are at getting ready for unexpected events. Like the ones in Texas.
What happened in Texas is not as simple as you seem to think or imply. Most Americans don’t save for or invest in the future so you think they’d financially support hardening of the grid? It’s easy to look back but don’t kid yourself, few want to pay for what ifs. Damned if you do damned if you don’t. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
@@brownwhale5518 I agree that the Texas issue is more complicated, however - it is a fact that the utility companies did not take precautions against very low temperatures, which did contribute to the avalanche of issues. Mind you, I don't expect they could have justified the required expenses to their shareholders before this happened. This kind of pattern has been increasingly visible in USA - let things get worse and worse without doing anything, then when it all comes crashing down, everyone jumps on the bandwagon and starts pointing fingers at "guilty" parties. At the same time, yes the progressing consumerism culture does trend to not look at the future. What I'm saying is, it's naive to expect investment in grid storage that's not in actual use and is just "in case something happens".
11:25 - It would be nice to mention at this point that coal powered plants _also_ failed during that epic blackout, because their cooling systems froze, and that wind turbines can bu bought with or without cold-weather and snow protection - guess which ones were installed in Texas? 11:55 - that was a very vague (and wrong) explanation of distinction between energy (measured in J or Wh) and power (W).
And natural gas fueled plants as well, in addition to gas supply infrastructure freezing up. The one that got me was STP nuclear SW of Houston having a reactor go down due to "cold weather issues". Their turbines and generators are out in the open🙄
@@IronmanV5 I think the nuclear issue was due to the water inlet temperature being lower than some arbitrary cutoff in the software. "That can't be right! Shut it down!" I recall reading it FWIW. And look, we're not built for true *lasting* cold. Texas gets chilly in the winter, and really cold a day or two at a time. I mean, our apartments have stairs on the outside. When there's a freeze they're death traps. I know. But it's only cold like that a day or two tops, and not every winter. Look at apartments in California. Same at Texas. Apartments in Wisconsin? Always on the inside. Our bus stops? Open. Wisconsin? Closed. Etc.
@@alvarofernandez5118 The natural gas fired power plants down my way, RGV, have the turbines & generators enclosed. The Braunig & Calaveras power plants on the south side of San Antonio also have them enclosed. The San Miguel power plant south of Pleasanton also has them enclosed. The fact that STP, located on the coast, doesn't in an area where Hurricanes are a somewhat regular possibility sounds like some stupid cost cutting to me. Same with Comanche peak SW of Ft Worth. In Tornado Alley. If they cheap out on something like that, what else did they cheap out on?
@@IronmanV5 not trying to absolve them, thats for sure. But complicated systems fail in complicated ways. There is not one cause. One cause is certainly being cheap/cost saving - or smart spending, which is what it's called when it works out. :-)

The mega packs from Tesla help to stabilize your electrical grid, but on their own they last a very short time. Have follow development in Australian solar for some time and had hope that there had been a similar development in storage, but storage is falling way behind what is needed.
@@bknesheim I agree. But our Right Wing Australian Government is only interested in helping the electricity companies make bigger profits at whatever cost to the consumers.
A huge number of ex Liberal Party (Right Wing) politicians serve as board members of oil, gas & electricity companies in Australia.

It's like having all good sets at the comedy club: just a good solid uninterrupted stream of entertainment.
Oh and also education.
@@squirlmy regulations are a commie cancer whose only purpose is to make the beneficiary of the corruption some politician instead of the company providing the service.

I literally saw your video in my recommended while watching Matt Ferrell’s video on the same thing and switched to this video because I prefer your style.

The grid failure in Texas wasn't inevitable or an accident, it was deliberate negligence on part of both the companies, the regulators and the powers that be. (Edit: To be specific, the power companies were provided guidelines on how to prepare for conditions like these-they didn't).

Because "freedumbs!"
Yes, it was a lot of the natural gas infrastructure failing in the cold that made the grid fail. Even if the power plants had be weatherized, the fuel supply would still have been a problem.

I seldom watch Matt but after his "energy storage breakthrough" video on hydrogen storage, it feels like he's more interested in putting out videos instead of putting out legitimate science. Just my take though. Keep doing you Joe!
Joe is "I want to believe", Matt just believes. I really can't stand watching Matt anymore. He seems like a nice enough person, but the signal to noise (or bullshit) ratio is way too low.
Hilariously, that was the first video of Matt’s that I saw! Needless to say it’s also the only one, there were a lot of legitimate perspectives left out in that video.
@@matthewmccall551 how do you know his signal to noise ratio if you've only seen one of his videos?

Matt's videos feel like press releases in video format, no matter how absurd the proposed tech is. There, I said it.
My biggest gripe is he doesn't bother to explore all pertinent sides of his topics. He pretends to be impartial and balanced but in the same breath readily draws conclusions and neglects to even mention obvious concerns or downsides. My personal favorite was his video about fungus-based building insulation in which he failed to mention water performance or exposure issues which IS THE #1 CONCERN WITH ANY BUILDING TECHNOLOGY. Like, duh? He also didn't bother to address concerns about fungal allergies for fungus grown packaging. These are very obvious oversights and I haven't watched any of his videos since. I'm not interested in being corralled into anyone else's myopic way of thinking. 🙄
@@GalvayraPHX good discussion and thanks for the civil reply
