    I'd like you to feed the results through a program like garage band so we can visually see the tails, peaks of the waveforms. To focus on sustain I'd see if you can play slower to allow the notes to trail off. In this way we can see if there is signal which trails off slower after the tightening.

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed that would be a good experiment. Would love to try it in a future video.

  • @odontomatix
    @odontomatix 3 роки тому +4

    A better way to compare the sustains would have been to use an oscilloscope to watch the decay of the waveforms and measure the time. Also using exactly the same notes and deflections would be necessary so the before and after notes start at the same amplitudes. I suspect that unless the neck is already too loose (and thus absorbing some of the energy), the loosening and retightening won't make any difference.

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  3 роки тому

      Yes that would make an interesting experiment, thanks for viewing!

      But being a Strat, it was out of tune within seconds

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  3 роки тому

      Joshua Sealock my strats stay in tune just fine. Set up the nut and bridge correctly with quality tuners and they are fine instruments. What issues do you struggle with?

    • @odontomatix
      @odontomatix 3 роки тому

      Very funny, but if you hear the same note ringing for 3 days, it's not the guitar's fault -- you have a medical condition called tinnitus, otherwise known as ringing in the ear.

    Nice experiment. There maybe a slight difference. I'm sure there are a lot factors that are at play, humidity and how well the guitars are cared for. Either way, nice and Great tone! What kind of Amp are you playing through? Settings? Pedals?

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  4 роки тому

      Thanks Wolf! Amp was my Fender Supersonic straight clean channel no effects/pedals so you could hear the sustain without other influence. I've got some other improvements planned for the Pearl Strat and I'm going to re-build a Squire Strat in a future vid. Lots coming!

    Thanks for the video, does pickup height matters for the sustain? Thanks

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  4 роки тому +2

      The main concern for the height is getting even sound across all strings and not too close where you can get a warble effect from the pickup magnets. I plan to do a future video on this, thanks.

    • @michaelpastrana8605
      @michaelpastrana8605 4 роки тому

      Rich Hoffman thanks , so whats your recommendation height of the pickup from the strings? Should it be closer to the pick guard / body of the guitar?

    • @0Imtheslime0
      @0Imtheslime0 4 роки тому +2

      lower the mics = lower output but more sustain
      Higher mics = more volume but less sustain
      dont overdo it. To much either way will have negative effect
      It is also dependable to a certain degree the gauge of your strings you use. Thicker strings = more magnetic pull = more output.
      To me, everything adjustable on an electric is a matter of preference. String height, mic height, tremolo tension. Some want power, some want sustain. Adjust and try.

  • @ordepsmusic
    @ordepsmusic Рік тому

    This video really helped me out! I can't describe how thankful I am. I just have a silly question: do I need to redo the process often, or when changing strings, or this is a one life time thing?

    Out to lunch on this. I gave my strat copy away and need another. But I have a Les Paul, so why would I want to do this? The nature of the strat is endearing to me just as much as my Les. If I wanna sustain I play Les. If I wanna twang I play a strat or similar. Different guitars for different sounds right? I had a Cort Matt Murphy signature I gave to my son that splits the humbuckers and makes a pretty sweet sound. I like that guitar a lot and it does cover some single coil sounds but it aint no strat - it sustains too long and has a more rigid...um....I don't know....um....rigid TONE? Not enough overtones? Whatever it ain't a strat. I'm looking at an Epi S800 right now. Or Mexican Strat. Gotta be black on black!!!

    • @RichTones
      @RichTones  3 роки тому

      Agreed, its all about whatever you prefer, and the sound you are going for. I've got several different brands, and types, and I'm always tinkering. I'm a huge tone chaser at times and is always a challenge to see what you can come up with. Thought this was helpful for players who only own a cheap Squire, on one bolt on guitar and would like to experiment with it.

    • @RichTones

      Yes probably was back then, I've since had the guitar Plek'd and plays really nice now. Guitar is old, so frets are really low, so its a balance between action and accepting very slight buzz, which is not noticeable at amplified volumes. thanks for watching!
