Because it is tradition and pride, some may laugh but it is the reason you volunteer and do what you do. So much is sacrificed, so much heartache and mental and physical pain. However, the willingness to carry on and know that you are surrounded by fellow firemen and the firemen that your father may have served with is all you need. So, what may seem like a miniscule change is taking a lot of the pride, the american pride out of it.

I think (my opinion beacuse i use it) european helmets are safer beacuse they protect basicly your whole head: beside top of the head protects back of ur head and neck and aditional cover for neck its more useful for fires. I belive in america some fire stations are getting those healmets other just need to get used to it. But again it depends on the fire station and firefighters.

The Euro helmets are definitely a lot safer design wise than the traditional US helmets. I get what you are saying on the helmet size vs wall studs, but that is likely due to differing construction standards. This is from a construction forum in the EU.
“Studs, joists, and rafters are always spaced 60 cm (23.62 in) on center. The dimensions of OBS and other sheets are multiples of 60 cm in both dimensions so they can be placed in either direction, e.g., 60 x 240, 60 x 300, or 120 x 300 cm.”

My dads been a ff for 18+ years and he is a certified SCBA technician and many time ffs don't use them because they'll use it for 2 minutes but it will take around the same time to put on if you're geared up. If you can clip them on, they'll use it more and more which reduces the risk of cancer by huuge margin, just few seconds in smoke they say... but they've been doing it for years.

two major advantages to the traditional helmet is the intent of the design in the first place. Hot water and ash constantly run down the back of your neck into the jacket with the euro design. This doesnt happen with a rear bend traditional. On a Euro, the ears are covered and unless you buy the ear speaker system, you cant hear anything. This is also problematic on non-fire scenes that are loud [car wrecks, extrications, etc]. Connectivity and additional wires take more time when bunking out. I am glad that he pointed out that it doesnt fit between studs 16" oc, as our RIC competition team found out. They both have disadvantages but the Euro helmet has several safety issues. True, a traditional helmet deserves to have an update, but my dept tried the Euros and only 2 people kept them. different strokes for different folks though...

    • @MarcelPichault

This is 100% false. The old F1 is used in like 90 countries in the world for decades, how on Earth can you believe that "ambers and hot water constantly running down your neck" could be possible? In Europe, since the construction is almost all concrete/stones, interior attacks are much more frequent. The need for the F1 originaly arose from the Paris FD requesting better heat protection for agressive attacks (at the time they were using a helmet akin to metro style). The F1 provides a complete head, face & neck protection, further enhanced by a neck curtain. Hearing is not impaired in the slightest. Please get the basic education before making such ridiculous statement.
