There is a big lack of women artists and designers over 35 represented online. I saw you video a few days ago, clicked on it but didnt have time to watch it so I went through my history today to find it again as I am so keen to hear the stories of other women artists who arent super young anymore. I am in my 40s and also pursuing my art/design dreams and it can feel alienating seeing all the very young artists on youtube. It's great you've started your channel, I am wishing lots of good luck with your new path.

Congrats! I'm 60 and coincidentally I quit my corporate job on Monday to find my own way to a more free and fulfilling life. Your video was so inspiring and helps me to know that it was the right decision and the world is full of possibilities. Thanks for sharing your story with openness and vulnerability. I love the phrase inspired action.💖

I enjoyed your video about starting an art career in your 50’s. I made the decision to start formally taking art classes PT while working FT about 5 years ago. I’m now 60. I still work FT in my career, not in art. I live in a super expensive state. I keep going with my art. I keep trying to grow with it and learn more. I’m divorced as well. I will never give up on my art. We do fucking deserve it!! We gave enough to everyone else our whole lives and continue to do so. I subscribed to your channel. There are quite a few women in our age group taking classes in the art school where I go. It’s a “thing” now! I love the bulletin board- Be delusional.

I also am a 50 year old new artist again after years of doing what I was supposed to😢. It’s been hard because I don’t have a lot of support from my spouse. To him it’s a product and not worth anything if it’s not making a good income. I’m fighting the urge to quit because of it. I am extremely creative and focused on oils and drawing. Your video is one of the few that address older artists. Thank you so much.

One of the reasons I divorced was because he couldn’t support me having dreams to want to be happy. My pension was more important than my happiness. Not saying that’s the solution for everyone. Start working towards something that feels good to you and prove to yourself and everyone else that it’s important and you can do it! Baby steps can add up a lot over a year. Sending you hugs and good vibes girl! ❤️😊

Hi, I’m in my 50’s too- and my husband can be the “show me the money” kind of guy also. I feel your frustration. I’ll tell you what advice I received: if you don’t take your art work serious then no one will! We have to be consistent and show up to work on our dreams , and as we do others will notice and realize that this isn’t going away, this is who we are and what we were created to do!
Stick with it Art Sister, who knows what a year can bring if you stick to your goals!!!

I downloaded your last video and listened to it while I was at the gym, which is one of the new things I'm doing in my 50's. It really resonated with me. I'm in the process of working out my own creative niche after years of inaction. Reaching 50 is feeling amazing right now. Suddenly, after years of self-doubt I feel like I know who I am and I'm not afraid to show it, be it and live it.

I just found your previous video today and the timing could not have been better. My creativity has been so negatively affected this past week, maybe the past month.
I was medically retired from the postal service in 2018 and I’ve done pretty well mentally.
I had two very geriatric cats and one special needs dog that kept me feeling useful. I lost both cats in the span of one year, one at 25 and the last this past April at 23. For the first time since my retirement I’ve started to feel absolutely useless. Due to the care needed for my special needs critters I’ve become pretty isolated, so on top of depression I get bouts of social anxiety.
I try to keep myself busy with my Etsy shop but I’m still drawn to the art world. The only thing stopping me are these bouts of depression.
Seeing so many of you in a similar age group with similar stories gave me a spark I hope to run with!

Congratulations Michelle on being monetized! It was awesome to see how your face lit up as you made your announcement. ☺ I am in my late 50's and have been working on building my creative business for the last couple of years. Having absolutely no experience with the business end of things, it has been a definite roller coaster ride and to be quite honest, this past week has found me in a state of overwhelm and floundering to the point of considering just giving up pursuing my business. Then for whatever reason, I was on UA-cam looking for something, and your video about 'Pursuing an art career in my 50's' popped up. Of course I was intrigued and had to watch. Thank you for sharing your story and your dreams. You've helped me to take a step back, take a deep breath, and remind myself I've got this. It's me again... YOU ROCK!!! I subscribed after the video before this one... My heart is so happy just hearing your story. I've felt guilty/ashamed/ & a bit disgused that I hadn't found my niche at 68 y.o.....After reading the comments I found that I am not alone & there isn't anything "wrong" with me. My Dad owned a plumbing/electrical business when I was pre-teen. He told me that when you work for someone else, you will make a survival...but when you work for yourself (and do it right) you will make a 'living'. He also told me that you are allowed to give out BUT not to give up...Sure wish that would have stuck all those decades ago.... Keep these videos coming, Please!!!

I was literally watching this while working my day job and the words "Be delusiona, dream bigger than other people's fears" hit me so hard because all the ingrained fears of other people are definitely holding me back. I think you said what a lot of us are thinking and dreaming of. I just turned 56 and I have decided to finally pursue that creative path that I gave up in my 20s when my creativity got crushed by the reality of having to pay rent, and my self esteem was shattered by bad relationships, and toxic workplaces, etc. I think the last few years of my life have made me realize that we only get this one life and if I don’t build myself up to do the things I always wanted to do, nobody else will.

I listened to your story on the last video with so much interest and wanted to comment & subscribe then I rushed off to do something and lost the page, so I'm so glad you posted this. And....now I have subscribed!!. I don't know how you came in my feed but you did! Your positive drive and clear plans to achieve a new path is SO meant to be and also so inspiring. I love all your ideas that have been clearly distilled from years of your life to allow you to know where you want to go now. One thing I loved was that you were a VM for Marks and Spencer in Canada when they were there and then they sadly left and you had to move on but clearly with more success. My daughter was injured playing basketball for England so could play no more and had a Saturday job for Marks and Spencer and after her injury she needed a full time job. She too showed a talent for VM and now she has been there 22 years in the UK already and is at the top of her game. Yes it is very hard work but she gets well rewarded with a great salary and pensions etc. But now she is 44 and there are days when she wants out of it all but has no clue what to do. I am the artist I the family having followed engineering and teaching all my corporate life and only returned to my art 2 years ago at 63 after missing out on art school at 16 as I needed a job and she laughs at me posting on IG etc. But I say 'One Day I'll be Famous with my Art!' 😂I wish she had something to draw back on too so she is not tethered to the corporate world so I am sending her your last video to show that WE CAN DO this Girl!!! Looking forward to going on your journey with you. Sally xx

Congratulations!!! I watched your video a day or two ago and knew it would resonate with so many people because you were telling your personal story and people love to hear stories that feel rooted in the “hero’s journey” where someone is choosing to step out of their regular existence to follow excitement and adventure; what bigger adventure is there than the one to create a life you love?! Also, I loved that as soon as you started speaking I thought “she’s a Canadian”. As a Canadian (from Toronto) residing in the US I enjoy hearing the cadence and “accent” of my people. @@michellejozina lol no “eh”s and I will definitely be following your journey. I’m 59 and a couple years ago I pulled out my set of oils that my Mom gifted me for Christmas when I was 13 (barely used) and my great aunt’s palette. They have been with me everywhere I’ve moved, in a box, waiting for me, until then. Taking them out and using them led to me learning watercolor painting and working on drawing, urban sketching etc. I’ve always been creative but this feels different. I’m not great (yet) but I love painting and get lost in it. My goal is to one day be able to earn a living making art. I want a completely different life than the one I have now and hearing/watching people who are making big changes is not only inspirational and motivational but provides proof it can be done! 🙂

I am also Canadian, (BC), also was a creative, artist kid, also female, also grew up with the "starving artist" mindset, also middle-aged (49), also tried doing a "real job" as close to art as I thought I could get (graphics design) and just now starting to really get back to my art and teach myself to believe that I can, indeed, be a "real" artist. Thank you for sharing your story. It helped me remember that it is still possible to have a life that I want, other people's opinions to the contrary be damned! lol

I just watched your previous video, subscribed & then saw this one. Congratulations on your YT achievement! I always loved art as a child but went to a small school with no art programme, which meant I wasn’t accepted into the art department when I went to Teachers College in the late 70s. Like you I dabbled in creativity over the years but the Internet has opened so many learning opportunities. In my early 50s I decided to give myself an art education & found I love acrylic painting (though I learn from artists of all mediums). I juggle full time work plus managing a neuromuscular condition that affects my dexterity & energy levels so my progress is slow but fairly steady. Next year I’ll turn 65 & get retirement income so I can decrease my salaried job & increase my art hours. I feel very close to finding a consistent ‘voice’ after much fun & experimentation. So happy to join you on your journey. Go you! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

O WOW!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! So happy for you.
I just found you today. You are my new found Mentor!!!!!
I so need to hear all your inspirational words today and for giving me hope.
I’m 59, my life is a shambles at the moment and focusing on making my art work for me is a priority (still working a full time job, as a carer). BUT I need to take care of me and my future, what’s left of it. I need to be able to take care of myself.
So I’m researching and gaining as much info to make this goal work for me!!!!
Thank you sooooo much for being you and sharing your thoughts and knowledge with us. You’re a star!

Good on you Michelle, like you I am pursuing an art career in my 50s. I have been formally studying art for the last 2 years, I have about another year to go before finishing my Diploma. Slowly, slowly I have been taking little steps toward opening my art business, and watching UA-camrs like yourself is very encouraging for me. I work full time elsewhere, and I often have days where I feel like it’s all too hard and I’m wasting my time. I get very discouraged. Videos like yours help me to keep going. Seeing others succeed at what I’m pursuing is such an encouragement. I wish you every success Michelle, I’m so happy to hear you’re going to be monetised too. Well done! I can’t wait to see where things go for you.

Hey Michelle, I just watched both videos for the first time today and BOY CAN I RELATE TO YOU! I too had a job in the corporate world and always thought how dumb it was for me to take the very little money I made just to clothe myself in clothes that I didn't even like but I ALWAYS knew in the back of my mind that I would have my own business and when the poop hit the fan throughout my life I would get back into my art. From opening an art school to doing very few commissioned pet portraits, POD with my art work, hand-painted clothing, etc BUT one thing I did do that was a super blessing was FACE PAINT and I did it for a living for 11 years and traveled throughout parts of the country with my little dog Cupcake and did festivals. Now I'm 60, the poop has once again hit the fan and I think I'm going to do a course on 1. face painting at festivals, 2. travel on a dime (and still be a princess) and probably youtube tutorials for how to actually do it. Anyhow, that's the hope, I'm starting to write book #1. I just wanted to pop in and tell you how much I can relate to you (the not knowing what you wanted to do, the incredible restlessness to not doing the norm and the passion for learning new things and stretching yourself. So from one artsy to another, it's GREAT meeting you and thanks for doing this! It's super encouraging!

Haha It's funny, I saw a phrase that I wrote on a piece of paper and stuck to my fridge. In my own chicken scratch writing... like speaking to myself and pushing myself every day to keep going, learn new things and do hard things. The phrase is 'A year from now, you'll be glad you started.' You basically said it in the video, and I've been saying this to myself for a long time.
Anyways, I'm very happy that you got to experience this 'moment' with the channel recently. It's so surreal when the things we do actually work?!?! Like, we might be really freakin' good at what we're doing?!?!

Really love this channel and the honesty if it. I've made a run at being an artist full time a number of times. I went to an art academy and have kept it alive over the years but have needed to work full time the last decade. I'm so unhappy in my life and am making another run at it but feel invisible in the painting circles, I've been feeling really demoralized. A number of my friends are very successful. Have wanted to break from the fine art circles but not sure how. I hope this group could grow to be supports to each other. Thanks for being brave and transparent.

So sorry you’ve had a negative experience. 😢 I’ve found that the last years working part time to have some steady income and then part time on my at and creativity was a great balance. Have you considered trying your talents in other areas like art licensing or teaching, or something else related but different? ? I’m wishing you all the best! ❤️

Thank you Michelle for commenting🧡 I'm still trying to have my student loans forgiven (6 out of 10 years full time at a non profit) but I've thought about taking a break for a year. That is the dream though, part time. I am so open to trying other things if my art pairs with it, working at opening my mind to it to learn and understand options. I don't know anything about licensing, and will look into it! Teaching a bit and finding my style to see if feels like a match. Thank you for the ideas, will keep watching. Would love if there were a women's group working through this!

Thanks Michelle, I think there are so many people who are in the same position. Working a job to pay the bills in the hope they can go back to their art later…. later… later. And suddenly the years have gone by and everyone seems younger and competitive but you and many of the commentators here have agreed …. it’s never too late to follow your dreams….. but it’s not easy, when you trying to keep a roof over your head and financial responsibilities. I read a saying a few days ago ‘if you don’t risk failure you aren’t living’ (something like that🤣) I hope it works out for you and best of luck with it all. Not sure about myself, I will keep going with my 9-5 job 🙄 and enjoy my true love of art when I can. Good luck ☘️
