Does anybody get why so much of this overture is so cheerful? I love it, but it does not seem to fit the rest of the opera. The melody by 4.25 sounds like the overture for a comedy.

This is a great question and I have my observations about it. Very often in Gaetano's dramatic operas the music will become suddenly rather jaunty and when this happens you are about to have a jolt of some kind, a stabbing or what have you. Life can be that way, thinking everything is great, then wham!. Donizetti was very observant of human nature ( rather like Balzac) and in the overture to Anna Bolena at the 4.25 moment begins taking us back to the bubbling happy days of their long courtship (6 years). The tragic part of their love affair and marriage was relatively short and then moved very quickly. But their romance is a story for all time and perhaps that is what he was after.
