Eucalyptus trees are like giant matchsticks. Portugal has an extremely high number of them. They are not natural to Portugal and are extremely dangerous but fast-growing and profitable. The government needs to ensure that no new eucalyptus trees are planted.

As a Portuguese I can tell you that most of this fires are started by the few greedy people that work in forestry,, most of this fires are done with intentions to profit from the burned woods , such is the ignorance of this few. However unlike the early 90s now we have better police and in time this people will pay the price
Eucalyptus is burned, but when the tree is like 5 years they will grow back. And the younger ones will start again from the roots. And the seeds need fire to germinate, so more areas are taking over by Eucalyptus.
