Now 81, I grew up riding Western and changed to English during college. I don't remember Western riding having the rein arm extended way in front of the saddle. Riders today look so uncomfortable.
The reason that the rider’s hand moves so far forward in the extended gaits is to challenge the horse and increase the degree of difficulty. When a horse is able to stay under control at an extended gait with the rider’s hand farther forward, it shows that the horse is well trained and comfortable in the bridle.
