Yes! Michigan girl here, married to a Yooper originally from Ontonagon. 😍 We love pasties! I use diced beef or ground pork, and always include onion, carrot, potato, and rutabaga. I prefer the hot water crust, though I do a combination of shortening and butter. For our first ‘serious’ date, I made pasties and a layered carrot cake, two of my husband’s favorites. Though he meant it as a compliment, he said my pasties reminded him of the ones his grandma bought from the freezer section. 😂😂 To this day, he insists he meant they looked like store-bought, but tasted way better. Pretty sure he’ll never live it down - my parents are fond of repeating that story. Thankful I married a man with such a good sense of humor! 😁😊🥰

That was such a sweet video of the two of you! It makes me miss my mother-in-law. She was a lovely Southern lady. She would pick veggies in her garden and we spent hot summer afternoons together snapping beans, cutting tomatoes and her telling me stories of her youth. She made the best cornbread dressing I ever had in my life. She raised five children and I was blessed to marry her middle son. Our two sons were very happy to have her for their Mee-Maw. She made it to 90 years and 3 months of age, then suddenly left us.
Becky and Renee, keep making these happy memories together. They are are the gold we save up for our golden years!💋❤

Hello from a fellow Yooper! We started watching your channel a while ago and love all the resourcefulness! We love pasties up here very much! It is very commonly used for church and school fundraisers and we have multiple pasty shops in our town. Traditional pasties are typically eaten with ketchup, I believe those that love Downstate (Lower Peninsula) aka Trolls like to eat them with gravy. The crusts were typically were thrown away from the miners but to me is one of the best parts! Loved meeting your MIL and such a joy to watch :)

Super cool that you spoke of the Cornish men & the reasons the Pasties made a great meal. I love hanging with people who love teaching! Thank you very much! I hope you had an amazing dinner/Bday!

I inherited the job of continuing the family pasty making..I use much less swede but add pumpkin and parsley. My mother in law insisted salt was most important and would run her finger through the mixture and taste..It works!!! my family say I smoosh (mixing it all together) the mixture. Lamb mince also makes fantastic flavour. I have been known to make up to 100 if having a family gathering. A mincer is great for doing the vegys. I live in Australia from a Cornish background.

My husband and children are descended from Cornish miners that came to Australia.
The Cornish traditions are very strong where we live, and lots of people still make Cornish Pasties.

As a Brit, I love my pasties. This would be great with a chicken and mushroom filling.
Hot water crust is fun to work with. If I remember right the hot water sort of breaks the gluten so you don't have to worry about over working it as much. Because of this it stretches and holds the shape you make with it and doesn't spring back like other doughs do. It's a similar idea when making wonton/dimsum wrappers.

Thanks again for the fun. I cook with lard quite a bit. One Big Tip: weigh it instead of measuring it. It is soooo sticky and hard to get out of a measuring cup. Weigh it once, jot it down, then go from there. So much easier! Done on a sheet of waxed paper, it is easy to add or take away, dump into a recipe bowl, then wipe the wax paper clean (like I do, but I'm weird) or throw it away!

    • @lindas.8036
      @lindas.8036 2 роки тому

Also. Please do your own research and check out pros and cons of electric pressure canning. A heat sensor placed in the center of a jar of meat showed that it did NOT get up to enough of a temp for long enough to kill botulism. Do your research. It is just not.a matter of the jars sealing; they have to get up to temp in the middle for a specified amount of time to be safe, and many pressure canners tested did not. There may be ways around it, but research it!

Tip for using the peeler. Instead of only peeling on the down stroke. Try moving it up and down fast so it peels in both directions as you rotate the carrot or other thin skin produce like carrots. It goes super fast! I would say it will be 3 x as faster at least.

We grew up on pasties! I'm from Marquette (U.P.). We'd get freshly made pasties early in the morning, have our hunting gear or fishing gear.... and make a day of it. Always had a large thermas full of hot coffee, another with iced tea, a bottle of ketchup, and extra salt, and pepper with plenty of napkins. We would make an all day event out sitting in the woods hunting, or on the embankment of Lake Superior or a river fishing. Truthfully, I believe the deer could smell us while we ate because we never seen deer until we were done eating. Whereas, the bear would be around when we fished waiting patiently for one of us to pull fish out the lake/river. The good old days.....I haven't been back home in over 40 years.
    I'm your pasties were delicious!

I just found this video. I was laughing while watching this video. Not at either of you, but at using lard for making the dough. My mother used Crisco, but my grandmother used lard. By the time I was 10, my grandmother was using purchased lard. Before then, they rendered their own lard. They ran a small dairy farm. Today it would be labeled organic. Back then it was the way it was done. I grew up on raw milk that came straight from the cow daily. We skimmed the cream and made butter. I miss those days. It is difficult to get pasturized milk or cream in my area. I love fresh butter. I love this video.

Several tricks to reducing onion burn in your eyes. You can refrigerate to reduce and you want a glass of water close to the onion while cutting because onion fumes go toward water and if the glass of water is bigger than your eyes, it will go there. Enjoyed your video with Renee, hope to see more!
When you add a sweet dessert, do you add a small piece of dough between the meat and sweet to separate them.
    Thank you!

I'm from Michigan to!!! I grew up in Flint but I want to move out of the city to the Alpena area which is way more rural and forested.
I want to have a huge veggie garden and my own permaculture food forest in with a wildlife forest of old trees

I will definitely be trying this soon. I've heard about them but have never tried them nor even tasted them. I also want to try the hot water dough recipe. NEVER thought you would end up with right amount of filling - was sure you would run out since these were loaded, huge, manly man servings. I can't wait to try it. I think I'll do the Italian sausage blend also. I really want to make these for my son and SIL.

I grew up on Pasties as my Mum was from Scotland. I do not think I could ever had Ground beef, but the rest looks authentic to Scottish Pasties. we use steak.

I made pasties last night. My mom was from Baraga, Michigan. We love pasties, we use Chuck roast and ground beef. My brother is vegan so he doesn't put meat and adds green chili strips....I like the meat. mmmmmmmm

I'm tickled pink that you made these! I can't wait to do a practice batch. My oldest just asked his girlfriend to marry him, her father is British and they live in MI, so I think this will be a perfect lunch!! Well done, friends! 😚

I used to make a version from TheKitchn with a filling of butternut squash, red onion, Parmesan, and pine nuts. It was so delicious! I’d be curious to try the lard version of the crust, but I’m not sure. I was a vegetarian for a several years, and some things are still hard to imagine eating.

Rolling the edge of the dough is authentic to Michigan, cause that's the way they do it in Michigan, at least that's the way I have had them. I'm from down state. Michigan.

I grew up using lard in all the pie crust type things as well as a few cookie recipes. We grew our own pork and my Mom would render the fat down and can it...we then had lard for the whole year. Also helpful for cooking with...with the price of butter going up I plan to start using lard more often. I dare say it’s healthier than vegetable shortening...I tried making pasties when I was a teen...so good. Haven’t made it since. I wonder how a gluten free dough would work? Im guessing it wouldn’t very well...

So a true Cornish Pasties. I love all your videos you are great. You just need to know this. They are a pie pastry filled with potato, rutabaga , onion , salt pepper. maybe some did a dap of butter. They were baked carried into the mines for lunch. So we do make these and I really like to make them just taste a little better with adding things cause that's what I do. Be careful how you label some things. But you did say Michigan pasties. But folks will still call it out.xxxx
