For a while in the 90s Comcast had some high number channel "speed vision" or something and they always seemed to have blocks of Wings of the Luftwaffe, Secret Weapons of "X", Wings of the Red Star, etc into the wee hours too.
It's amazing to look at these old warriors, if you didn't know, you'd think they were just senior citizens who had a job, unaware about how hard and distinguished they were back in the day.
These broadcasts have become even more important if only for the fact that real former pilots offer their experiences and recollections - infinitely valuable.
This was a superlative series. I do believe its narrator alex scott could have been an bit part actor in several british classic intrigue shows such as Department S. Such a marvellous voice.
The Arado 234C 4-engine variant was the most technologically advanced plane of WW2. If you look at the American XB-48 jet bomber the influence of the Arado 234 is everywhere.
What we have today we can thank the Germans for. And only now this many years on can we study and appreciate the technology they made in aviation and many other areas like medicine for example. But the atrocities from both sides almost not be forgotten and overlooked. Absolutely love these great planes doco spin-offs
Germany would still have lost the war even if the 262 was used as an interceptor from the start. It entered operational service after D-day and a day before the Meteor. By which time the US had a jet fighter. Once the Allies had air bases in France the game was up for the Luftwaffe
@Brian Roome actually that is the way to win a war. The Germans should have deployed the Dornier, me 262, arado straight away defensively in 1943 against the heavy bomber streams and they would have won the war. The British did the correct thing, flying the meteor only over friendly sky using it against the V1.
This was used at Remagen ! LOL ! Amazing everything from Stukas to V2 rockets were used to no effect on that bridge which collapsed shortly after the attacks were finished killing many stunned GIs . A functional replacement was made very quickly
The 'Bridge at Remagen' was attacked heavily by these planes for ten days, before the bridge finally collapsed. But it was too late to stop the Allies by then.
Ah yes the AR-234. I played it before in "IL-2 1946" and the engines are so sensitive that use too much throttle and the engines might result in a fire.
Germany was one war ahead of the allies with it’s astonishing technology. The only answer for the allies was massive undisciminate terrorbombing. Germany against the whole world and still standing an fighting to the very end was amazing.
Except for the V1 and V2, the Germans were about six months ahead of Britain and the US. And that was because the allies realized the war was won with the current generation of aircraft and armor and slowed the development of the P-80, Meteor, M-26 and Centurion so that those never saw real action. If the outcome of the war were more in doubt in early '44, the 262s and Ar234s would have been met with equally capable allied jets and the Tiger II would have been met with an overwhelming number of Pershings and Centurions.
Hitlers decision to order the first Me 262 as a bomber (1943! The first Jet in Germany, the He.178 flow in August 1939!), instead of made it beeing an great interceptor, was on of his many bad Errors Hitler made in the years 43/44 - against all the good counselts from great flighter asses like General Adolf Galland Oberst Lützow, Obers Johannes Steinhof...and others, he decided that the Me-262 has to be a bomber, his "Revenge-Bomber" to bomb London, instead of intercept the Bombers destroying Germans Cities every day and night! The Me-252 would have been able to stop that! Even US General Spaatz confirmed that after the war. But at that time Hitler was total psychotic… and so the first Me-262 became a Jet bomber, a Purpose it was never designed for. And this stupid, fat and vain "Reichsmarschall" Göring, the worst and badest Chief of Luftwaffe ever did not had the eggs to contradict Hitler. The hard punchline: The Luftwaffe have had the perfect Jet Bomber already ready in 1943/44: The ARADO-234! A wonderful modern Jet miles ahead of time! But after 1943 Hitler and Göring fell in greater raging Madness every day still believing in "Wunderwaffen" who would change the luck of war and will give hem the "Endsieg" at last! Maybe if the Leaders of the NS-Regime would not have been so stupid as they were, because the german scientist made unbelievable discoveries and inventions….. but God Thanks Hitler and his Paladins was as stupid as Evil!
ST3F4N Now, Hitler and his closest staff was old mad men from WW1 who could not benefit from the skilled german scientist and we can be lucky for the outcome of the war. Sad though that the allied bomber commands only answer to the sturdy german resistance was indiscriminate terror bombing of the whole german societety. Terrorbombing has nothing to do with war efforts but to eliminate a people and its culture for good. The history has several exempel of this tactic...
@@zeke3486 A country shouldn't start a war unless it's able to finish it. Germany declared war on the US, not the other way around. Hitler was a terrible leader who knew nothing about military strategy. His downfall began with the invasion of the Soviet Union. In another comment, you said Germany fought to the very end. LAMO. After Hitler iced himself, German leaders surrendered within days.
One of the major blunders by the Luftwaffe. Why didn't they use the Arado as a jet bomber against the US airfields in the UK. Even with only a single 500 kg bomb each, a Gruppe of 50 planes would have devastated an airfield. And without bombs and external fuel tanks dropped. No fighter could have intercepted them. Imagine the damage 3-400 of those jet bombers could have done. Each day 3-4 airfields being left in ruins.
I think it was a blunder for them to not put major developments early on since jet engine tech was available days before the start of the war. But even if they did do it and it did cause great damage. The Allies would have jump started their jet fighters much earlier since the British also had jet engine tech. But ignored it for cheaper, easier to manufacture, and proven propeller fighters. And there was no way for Germany to out compete American resources and manufacturing. jet bombers in mass would cause a lot damage but use up a lot of fuel and other resources.
Yes, this is much better than many military videos that are full of footage only slightly related to the subject matter -- or that show the wrong machines or battles altogether.
If the Me 262 was the jet fighter, then the At 234 was the jet bomber. Why make the 262 a bomber as well, which obviously affected it's fighting potential. 🙄
Whilw WINGS as a series has a big place in my nostalgic heart, it was just wrong so many times. The Ar-234 had nothing to do with recon when designed, developed, or used. It was a fast strike bomber. The 30s desugned Ju-86P could fly almost twice as high as the Arado, and even it was eventually caught at the edge of 50,000 feet. This entire episode is rife with false assertions. I hope it inspires people to look into better sources like it did for me.
If the Germans copied the Lancaster and Mosquito and had a fleet of 400 of them , Germany would have won the war. The Germans couldn't deliver a heavy punch against the Red Army assembly areas or Allied invasion fleet. The Germans were too arrogant. The British admired German ingenuity and made the Canberra.
No , 400 submarines early instead of battledhips and failed aircraft carrier .More advanced subs ....sooner . Cut the supplies of oil and weapons building up well before D-day
