    The French and British defenses during the German Spring Offensive 1918 were put to a real test when the Germans attacked. The carefully built defenses had to be abandoned and new lessons had to be learned.

    Just finished watching this video. Twice. There's a lot of information in there. It was very perceptive of you to realise that the weekly episodes don't have time for much more than chronicling the basic movements; and that here, a lot more was required to understand what was really going on. Indy, I stand in awe. Now, over to the "Visualized" channel to see what he has to say about storm troops!

      Griffin Anderson if I may ask why was there a warning there weren’t any particularly disturbing footage or images.

    • @mihailkondov4773
      @mihailkondov4773 6 років тому +5

      Because of 3:33, where you can see retreating troops getting mowed down. The first time I saw the video I only saw one man in the bush falling there, not that disturbing. I was asking myself the same question as you, but now looking at it again I saw everything and the disclaimer is understandable.

    • @wordsmithgmxch
      @wordsmithgmxch 6 років тому +4

      Well, if I had to imagine, I'd guess it was the charge the Brits stopped just short of their trench at 3:33 or the Germans going tippy-toe through the trench carpeted with British dead at 3:54. Mass slaughter seems to put some folks off; can't think why.

    • @simonroebuck7145
      @simonroebuck7145 6 років тому +1

      Griffin Anderson agree, great work by the team here, gives more of a idea of what's going on, over a bigger time period. I was beginning to wonder at what point the 'tide was going to turn'.

      Maybe one should rename the channel to: 'Remingtons-revenue-rally (a short four-year look into: spreading global freedom with the progressive benevolence of western defence-entrepreneurs, the sanctity of the contract as actual basis for the prevailing individualism of conscripted males in socially unfortunate circumstances)'?

    I...finally catched up! I've been following you guys since...Idk, maybe this January? I got here looking for WW1 stuff, and never expected to stumble upon such a series. Not only complete and interesting, but also captivating. Indy, Flo, all the crew, you are doing an awesome job. Congratulations.
    Also, question for OOTT. Were tunnels used to allow infantry to break into the enemy lines? Just like mines were used to blow them up, I suppose that digging tunnels that lead right behind the enemy trenches and allow a handful of soldiers to sneak upon the enemy while another group storms it frontally could have a devastating effect on the enemy defenses, or potentially disrupt the enemy's supply lines

    It's taken all of May, but I've caught up! I saw this channel for the first time back when Battlefield 1 came out, but I didn't really check it out because...Well, I didn't feel like it, really. Got really interested in Shell Shock one day (for some reason), and I watched a documentary on it here on UA-cam. It was there that I saw this channels video on the very subject in the reccomended, and so I watched it. Then I watched the special on the use of animals. I felt like getting into this channel so I did. Weeks of binge-watching. It has been totally worth it.

    I love this episode! The information was told like a story and seeds interest in the "next" Great War.
    It seems Germany, from lessons learned (from moment such as subjects discussed within this episode), developed what will later be called a "Lightning War" strategy opening up World War II.
    Thanks for another great episode.
    P.S. the calendar mirroring of the Great War is one of the best ideas, in the genre "infotainment"! Keep up the good work.

    Here's the catch with copying tactics I didn't expect. Just like past cases of reverse engineering another group's machinery for your side to use, doing the actual copying isn't that easy like it sounds. It's a lot harder to get everything right, and often there is unforeseen things begin to appear during the process that becomes a problem or flaw, that you have to figure out how to solve it, or what went wrong during the copying process. Apparently this applies in copying tactics, too.

    you missed one important fact regarding the breaking of codes is that early in the war a German sailor was washed ashore near more months with code books and the Russians gave the information to the British in 1923 Winston Churchill publicize this fact foolish Lee in one of his Memoirs and then the Navy histories Republic shortly after exposing the same fact this led to the Germans developing the Enigma, which cost the British a considerable amount of time and effort to crack an international effort actually with French polish British which was unnecessary because Churchill just didn't keep his mouth shut that is why Colossus was kept quiet until the 1970s cuz Churchill had learned from that lesson but the importance of the fact that the British had the codes in 1914 cannot be overemphasized

    Where was the Germany Calvary? If you plan to punch a hole in your enemies lines of defense you kinda need to exploit the hole, Infantry is to slow and the Germans had no real tank force so that only left Calvary to do the Job. They had months to prepare and no one realized this?

    I've been waiting for this episode for a long time because today is the first American battle of World War 1. The Battle of Cantigny happening today. I'm just a little disappointed that America weren't mention yet.

      Don't worry. They will be in thursday episode which will cover Operation Blücher-Yorck.
      The engagement of US divisions at Cantigny and Chateau-Thierry will be mentionned and Belleau Wood will be next week as well.

      Didn't remove the fact they were there and will be mentionned. Just like the Portuguese were mentionned during operation Georgette, the Australians at Villers-Bretonneux, and as will be the 2 Italian Divisons that fought during the 2nd battle of the Marnes.

      lol I'm not crying at all XD
      I'm French you know and i know that the role of USA's military in this war was not as big as some may say.
      Still they should be remembered for what they did actually do, even if we can argue the result would have been the same without them.

  • @sharkfinbite

    I think the reason why this worked well for the Germans at first is the fact they knew what to do, where to go, and it weaknesses are since they were the ones that created it in the first place. Apparently this was the fatal flaw with the copying. Your opponent knows more about your concept than you. Mean while you are still trying to figure out and learn everything in your copy.

    • @canicheenrage
      @canicheenrage 6 років тому

      sharkfinbite Not necessarily. Ine could even argue that the germans knew how to counter regular assaults with the Line, but having had to face it, the British knew what complementary measures to implement to improve on the german model....

  • @canicheenrage
    @canicheenrage 6 років тому +2

    "(Pétain) could not commit a large amount of french troops to aid the British".
    40 divisions in total were taken from the 720 km of french front to prevent the annihilation of the British army forces in France.
    And the Germans then failed to break through the very thinnened french lines.
    Gotta wonder what a "large amount of troops" would have meant to you. All 110 of them, plus all the constituted units ?

    • @merdiolu
      @merdiolu 6 років тому +3

      In first days Petain just released eight divisions reluctantly. After Foch's prodding and axis of enemy advance became clear he increased that number to first 20 then in first week of April 36 divisions by this time German advance was stalled on Amiens by British and Australians at north. French reinforcements mostly took over southern part of the broken front letting British reserves to concentrate on North.
