Wiring An ACR or Battery Combiner on my Boat?

  • Wayne sent us an email asking, "Can I wire the positive leads of my ACR to my battery combiner on-off switch to eliminate direct connections at the batteries? If so, does it matter if the connections are on the hot side of the switch or the load side? I have seen diagrams that use both methods."

    Could you use a simple diagram to show rather than “don’t “ with your hands

    does that combiner box work with agm motor battery and lithium house bank batteries? do they need to be the same battery make?

    How do you know the acr is charging your other battery

    If you we wire ACR the correct way how do you add a two bank charger to the batteries without interfering with ACR.
    Blue seas says if you install it on the load side you can attach your battery charging lead straight to the batteries please help

    Hi Jeff. Thanks so much for sharing you knowledge here.
    I'm a 'fellow boater' with a question! In the old days, when the starter battery was low, I could combine banks 1 and 2 to get the diesel motor started. Can I (should I) do the same today with my AGM starting battery and Lithium house battery? If so, how would it be wired into the system and which combiner would you recommend I install?
    This would only be used in the event or a dead or low starting battery. Cheers!

      Lithium isn't so great for engine starting loads. For engine starting redundancy, you might want to get a 2nd AGM instead of using your Lithium battery. Anyone else can share their experience with redundant battery for engine starting when the house battery is Lithium.

    Goo advice.

    Would it make sense to use a DC/DC charger such as an Orion TR-Smart between the alternator/starter side and the house bank instead of an ACR?

      Definitely worth considering, DC to DC charging converters are now maxing at about 30 amps.

    Hi Jeff. So is it acceptable to connect the combiner to the line side of my on-off-combine switch? On the same posts that have the battery cables on them? That’s technically unswitched right? Is that effectively the same as being directly on the battery?

    • @PacificYachtSystems
      @PacificYachtSystems  2 роки тому

      Technically yes, make sure the battery combiner wiring is fused at the line side of each side of the circuit.

      But I would say Jeff is implying that you connect ACR wires directly to batteries, NOT the line side of battery switch.
      This ensures you are not sharing wires for two separate functions, and also allows easier fuse implementation (battery terminal fuse block, etc), vs rigging some type of inline fuse from line side of battery switch.
      Just my thoughts.

    Whats the solution for having two different sized battery banks and wanting to use an ACR?

    • @PacificYachtSystems
      @PacificYachtSystems  2 роки тому

      It's doable (i.e. the higher the ratio of battery banks the worst it is) just remember to constantly inspect the fuses on either of the battery combiner, as imbalanced battery banks in parallel while charging can cause high inrush of current to go through the battery combiner (ACR).

    I have put a switch on my ACR negative wire so I can turn it off if I think my alternator is getting too hot.

      Roy,. Not sure why your alternator is getting hot. Make sure you have the correct size wire connected to your alternator. Also, I have a switch on my negative wire on my ACR. Without a switch, my ACR is always active looking for 13.3v to combine or 12.6v to disconnect. The amp draw is minimal, but I guess we are like, in that I don't want any current to my ACR when my boat is in storage.

      @@calvindickey4597 If you disconnect the main ground from your batteries when winterizing then all circuits are broken. Even if ACR and bilge pump auto switch AND stereo settings memory wire is still connected at main 12V + battery terminal, there is no completed circuit during storage.

      @@paulwhealy5243 Not correct. I put a switch on the ACR Negative wire. Both of my batteries negatives are tied into a negative bus bar. I did this so that the ACR is completely off during storage.

      @@calvindickey4597 The problem is alternators are air cooled with a built-in fan, at idle and low revs with a high current load there's just not enough airflow and they can overheat, I just leave the acr off until I'm on the move. When time allows I'm going to try to put a small computer fan on the back and a thermostat on the side to switch the acr off and fan on to take me out of the equation lol.

      Hi Paul, disconnecting the ground sense wire will certainly stop the ACR. Another option is to connect a switch to the SI (starter isolator) post, and this too will disable the combiner.
