External SSD such as Samsung T7 and Sandisk Extreme are slower (up to 30% reduction in performance) when connected to this device on a Mac M1. Some USB flash drives are 50% slower when connected to this hub. Some video adapters do not work. However the same devices connected to a Caldigit TS3 Plus do not exhibit this behaviour and the SSD are fast and the video adapters work .. Tested on a Mac mini M1 and a MacBook Air M1. When I googled this I see a lot of people are seeing these same issues. I am now worried other devices may not work or have reduced performance. OWC tech support confirmed what I am seeing and will say its a Mac M1 issue, however why does the Caldigit TS3 Plus work?
Does OWC’s new Thunderbolt 4 11-port hub also have its own thunderbolt controller that delivers these same SSD speeds? Or is it just this particular hub that reaches these speeds?
@@2005wsoxfan no. One solution I’m finding for two Displays is attaching a DisplayLink adapter to this after downloading its driver. Not sure if it will work without this but I’m thinking you’ll need the extra port to plug in your laptop to power.

I purchased this OWC 4 Hub based on this review. My experience was not as good. With ext thunderbolt 4 SSD connected had 1400 W 1700 R. Connected directly to back of M1 Mac mini had 2000 W 2400 R. With a Crucial 500GB USB-C SSD mid 500's r/w with dock. 800 r/w connected directly. Sent it to OWC and they said its fine. When I get it back I will document the speed differences and make my first UA-cam video. I personally wont buy from them again. Check their BBB score 1 out of 5 stars along with the 1 star reviews on their previous TB3 dock on Amazon.
I think the reason for Sabrent Rocket performance anomalies is due to thermal throttling. I experienced wildly different results using BM disk test with the 1TB Q version and sent it back. The OWC Envoy enclosure for TB3 only uses two of the four PCIe lanes and returns consistent 1200 MB/S for read and writes. Looking at your spreadsheet, it seems USB-C/A is where the 100 MB/s slowdown is prevalent. This has been (I think) a confounding issue for much of the analysis into this M1 external SSD performance problem and I greatly appreciate your raw data and exploration. You guys rock!
I bought the owc tb4 hub a couple days ago, surprisingly I’m actually getting slower speed on my externals, my 2.5 sata ssd got 250MB r/w down from 350MB when directly connected to the m1 mini. It’s sad that we have to buy an external accessory to get more ports... Let’s just hope that they include 4 ports for the M1X model!
No, the hub won't give you more video outputs, in the same way that connecting an M1 Mac to 2 external monitors via the TB3 connectors also doesn't work. The only solution I'm aware of for getting multiple monitors are: 1) On the M1 Mini, use 1 x TB3 port plus the HDMI port for the second monitor 2) Use a dock that supports DisplayLink (video over USB), to connect to multiple monitors (which is what I do).

Speeds are same between 3 and 4. I think the main thing is that it (The M1) only uses 2 PCIe lanes instead of 4 which would still give good speeds but at up to 2500MB/s (per port). And it doesn’t support the required amount of Display port connections, which is why less monitors on the M1. Anyway, it’s not about the hub, it’s about the Thunderbolt controller in the M1 Mac. The hub seems a great way to expand it for sure!
Thanks much! I'm saving my pennies and dimes for a new M1 Mac, and trying to decide which model to buy. SSD is going to be absolutely essential, whichever one I opt for, but that connectivity just seems SO limited on all the current models! It's great to know that there is a way to expand my options beyond just a couple of ports.
The port placement is a bit uncomfortable... I would want 2 C port and 1 A port on the front, and the DC, uplink, and 2 c port on the back so everything could easily tuck away while giving me 2 c port to hot-plug when I need it. If that is coming out, I would drop $200 easily for that.
EDIT: You already Did. Love your Channel!!! ------ Can you connect the apple Pro Disply XDR and use fast USB Drives as well? Does the XDR use Display Stream Compression with the M1 Macs? Please, you are THE ONLY PEOPLE that actually know what I am talking about 😂
I really don’t understand why Apple didn’t offer more ports on the Mini...it would be very helpful if they added a port on the front. Preferably another thunderbolt but at least an usb-a
I'm sure there were lots of constraints & they hit a deadline & decided it still made sense to release the mini w the MBA on launch. it's probably also part of the reason they discounted it $100. I'd be surprised if they don't address this on the next rev - it cost them money def to mold a separate mini shell with 2 ports when they could have gotten away w reusing the old shell 100%!
Because, just like there were two variations of the Intel Mac Mini, there will be two variations of the Apple Silicon Mac Mini, with the second using an M1x.(or similar name). When it arrives in Stage 2 of the transition, You’ll see more cores, more ports, and with luck, the return of 10Gb Ethernet. But don’t expect any ports on the front. They could have been doing that for the last decade and didn’t. I don’t expect that to change. That chip will also power the replacement for the higher end MacBook Pro13”, the MacBook Pro 16”, and the lower end iMacs. I expect it to arrive sometime between March and WWDC in June. And then it will on to stage three...
I recently bought an M1 Mac Book Pro so I can use Da Vinci Resolve for editing my videos (after watching one of your reviews) and its great...I am wondering as to whether getting a Mac Mini would benefit me at all and whether I could use it alongside my Mac book how would I set that up..?....also thinking about buying the hub too..!
I wonder how the OWC hub compares to one of those 'base' hubs specifically for the Mac Mini? Btw, @10:38 Graphic for the 'Hub Read' appears to be incorrect
Possible related benefit: Another channel suspects that the Bluetooth issues the M1 Macs have been having is due to the Bluetooth controller doing double duty as the USB controller. If you can use one of these hubs and avoid connecting anything to the USB ports on your Mac, supposedly the Bluetooth issues vanish.
I found out, that Mac users are allergic to adapters, because 'Macs are built the way they are for a reason and therefore they don't need an adapter'. Well, that's not my opinion. I find that opinion strange to be honest. And one Mac user said to the people in the meeting "don't mention the adapter, I don't want to talk about it". That seems to be something from very deep inside, that's influencing people... It's strange. But it's nice that you present us a useful adapter here in your video. Thanks!
Waouhhhh.... impressed ! I have the Elgato Thunderbolt Hub which I bought for twice the price... OWC is a great company : I bought their kit to put 2 SSDS on Mac Minis 4 years ago. Mac minis are the greatest machines ever, totally undervalued by users. I am an IT guy and use 2 quand core i7 16GB 2TB mac minis 2012 as Windows Server machines for development. NEVER A single problem ! Apple builds one of the best PC hardware on the planet.
I purchased this item and my Dell 2720QM 4k monitor will not wake from stand by mode. But the Dell does wake if it is plugged directly into the Mac Mini M1. This situation is not good.
I don’t think the TB/USB4 situation is going to be this messy again with the next Apple Silicon Macbooks. I think the reason the M1 can’t drive two 4K 50Hz displays is because the M1 is essentially the A14X chip that is rumored to be going into the next iPad Pro, and they did this to streamline their M1 & A14X production line because pandemic. Next year we’re hopefully going to get proper Thunderbolt 4 ports and we’ll be able to drive two 4K 60Hz displays from the two TB4 ports directly on our next Apple Silicon Macs instead of having to buy a hub. Speaking of which, can you test if we can plug in two 4K 60Hz displays into this new OWC Hub next if you have two 4K 60Hz displays in your hand? The real question is if Apple really has two Thunderbolt controllers integrated into the M1 why did they not wire both of them to the two Thunderbolt ports and leave us in a janky situation like this?
Received this Hub today from OWC but after running tests with Mac Mini M1 I do not get this speeds. Even changed out the cable with one of those 10gb cables purchased from Amazon at a cost of $26. Now when I get on my MacBook Pro 16” I get extremely fast speeds. Testing with the Sandisk 500gb usb-C 3.2 Gen 2 which is suppose to get up to 1050MB/s. Get about half of that speed on Mac Mini M1 via hub. On MacBook Pro get nearly 900MB/s. Go figure.
It would be very interesting to see how this hub performs with a tb ssd + tb sound sound interface for the musicians. The M1 Mac could be extremely interesting to a music performer that need extra disk space for sound libraries than the standard Macbook provides if it will not ruin the low latency of the tb sound interfaces. Most sound interfaces do only require tb 2 but the key reason to choose them is the much better latency vs usb interfaces
Hey, I know what you mean! I'm currently running a M1 MacBook with my entire Logic Pro projects running off an external ssd, as well as running an interface for recording. Its amazingly smooth! I also just uploaded a vid to my channel where I talk about these type features as well as good USB hubs for the M1 range if you wanted to check it out 😁
If you're planning on using this with TB3 - make SURE you read the requirements first. This requires a TB4 host (computer-side) connection, unless you have Big Sur (MacOS 11) on your Intel TB3 Mac. If you're doing music production or anything super content-heavy, make sure all your apps are tested and "certified" on Big Sur...
@@PeteKowalsky I've found that on a Windows PC with TB3, I can get TB3 output out of the port furthest away from the power port. The other ports get USB-C.

I'm not sure if this will solve an issue I'm having with M1 Mac Mini. I have two displays connected all the time, but sometimes I connect my Home Theater Processor to run in conjunction with software to do testing and measuring. The Mac sees the processor as a display though, so I need to disconnect my 2nd display to make it work. It kind of sucks, bc it's this type of application where my 2nd display really comes in handy. So would this dock allow me to connect my processor without having to discconect the 2nd monitor? Thanks!
I just got a Macbook air M1 as well as the Xiaomi 34 monitor(3440x1440 144hz). I could read, that one can get the full resolution and 144hz when using a DP1.4->usb-c cable to the mac directly. Do you know if it works the same when connecting to the hub? Could you maybe test this? Many thanks and best regards
This is perfect because the hagibis, agptek, and the other brand of mac mini hub/docks apparently are having seriously bad reviews where the 2.5 inch internal sata enclosure seems to be disconnecting the ssd hard drives. Not worth the $80 price tag.
I have just bought both the SSD drive and the big brother of this hub while waiting for my 16Gb, 512, 10Gb eth, M1 Mac mini. Everything on this channel is so positive towards Apple. I'm now reading some horror stories on the forum about Bluetooth connectivity still being an issue and this gets compounded when you add a hub or a dock into the mix. Can you perhaps speak a little on the Bluetooth issues and how you see it/ have experienced them 6 months on? I'm awaiting my order to come through which includes a new Bluetooth peripherals so I've ended up spending a lot of money and its' all your fault hehe.
This review is nice but incomplete. What about the powering of the Mac through that hub/dock? According to their website it only provides 60w? Is that enough to maintain or recharge a MacBook Pro m1 under heavy loads?
I currently have some external usb-a harddrives connected to a hub on my iMac. I am planning on buying the new iMac, do you have a suggestion how to connect the harddrives?
i have OWC thunderbolt 4, my worry is about the battery life of my MacBook Pro m1; I need these connections because I'm a producer, but the Mac is always in charging mode. how can I disable the charging by OWC ?
I bought a Kingston Nucleum type-c hub and attached to my Mac Mini, it get super hot very quickly even I didn't attach anything on it. I checked on web and found out that many people have same problem on Mac, can Max be able to investigate on this issue?
Now to test the speeds of devices connected to dongles that are connected to the thunderbolt ports on the dock. To expand each of those TB3 ports to various USB, HDMI, Ethernet connections
looks promising but after being a victim of USB hubs bricking my m1 I'm really wary of docks. I used the simple anker one and had to have my computer serviced as it wouldn't turn on and clicked... they "patched" it the day after
Hi great channel! Will this work to solve M1 Mini dual display issue. I have (2) thunderbolt tb2 displays needed working with the M1 mini. Theoretically.. use this in 1 TB port and then connect 2 Apple displays to the hub for a solution? Thanks mate
Are you guys gonna test this enclosure by the same manufacturer? Thunderbolt 3 Two-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosure Support Thunderbolt 2 Compatible with New M1 CPU
Why would Apple cut the total number of ports in half when these tests prove that it could easily have had all four? It's not like there's a lack of space inside the mini either. It's basically hollow inside. Are they holding back to sell a more expensive one in 6 months?

@@glenallan6279 Is this how the discovery was made about the amount of 2 PCIE lanes?
Thanks much! I'm saving my pennies and dimes for a new M1 Mac, and trying to decide which model to buy. SSD is going to be absolutely essential, whichever one I opt for, but that connectivity just seems SO limited on all the current models! It's great to know that there is a way to expand my options beyond just a couple of ports.
Any chance on providing a link to the 10GB thunderbolt 3 cable??
Can you suggest a thunderbolt hub for MacBooks that doesn’t need power
The port placement is a bit uncomfortable... I would want 2 C port and 1 A port on the front, and the DC, uplink, and 2 c port on the back so everything could easily tuck away while giving me 2 c port to hot-plug when I need it. If that is coming out, I would drop $200 easily for that.
Would you say this is also worth it for 2018 Mac Minis? I'm maxed out on ports even with the 4+2 configuration.
EDIT: You already Did. Love your Channel!!!

Can you connect the apple Pro Disply XDR and use fast USB Drives as well? Does the XDR use Display Stream Compression with the M1 Macs? Please, you are THE ONLY PEOPLE that actually know what I am talking about 😂
This is awesome! I heard about all the problems with USB speeds and m1 macs. You have answered a bunch of my questions.
What do you think of it compared to El Gato Pro?
And then it will on to stage three...
what qnap device are you using ? why did you invest in qnap vs synology ? i am just curious
No black screen of death bricking issues yet with the hub?
will this fix the damn bluetooth disconnecting and lagging??
Nice review! The new OWC hubs have come a long way. My old OWC Thunderbolt 1 hub is 3X the size of yours.
Apple Silicon M1 does not evens support Thunderbolt 4. It supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB 4, a big difference.
Is it Available in India ?
I saw another review video of this that mentioned that running Windows on Bootcamp with the hub causes blue screens. Have you tried it?
I wonder how the OWC hub compares to one of those 'base' hubs specifically for the Mac Mini?
Btw, @10:38 Graphic for the 'Hub Read' appears to be incorrect
I'm happy to see a review for this. It does seem like an excellent addition to an M1 mac. Excellent job!
This is the 4th review of this hub I have seen today. Now I am convinced.
Probably paid marketing campaign if you have seen 4 in a day.
this OWC or a Plugable hub? they have almost the same specs....
Possible related benefit:
Another channel suspects that the Bluetooth issues the M1 Macs have been having is due to the Bluetooth controller doing double duty as the USB controller. If you can use one of these hubs and avoid connecting anything to the USB ports on your Mac, supposedly the Bluetooth issues vanish.
please do not charge using the Hub USB C without first upgrading to version 11.2.2 of big sur
Apple builds one of the best PC hardware on the planet.
what kind of qnap you are using?
Is it HDMI monitor compatible?
Hi, I have an iMac 27 2020 with 4 UBS and two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Will this hub work for me?
Can you add the SSD build video link to the notes?
Yes no one stocks it I ordered it and they told me we don’t have it on back order. No where to be found. How did you get one./?
Where do you buy the 10G USBC cables? Are the generic ones on Amazon good? Do you have a link?
Go figure.
Same here... My T7 2Tb supposed to give 1000MB/s peaks around 650MB on MacMini M1
I also just uploaded a vid to my channel where I talk about these type features as well as good USB hubs for the M1 range if you wanted to check it out 😁
That is exactly what I am looking for for two and a half years now🔥 finally🤟🏾
If you're planning on using this with TB3 - make SURE you read the requirements first. This requires a TB4 host (computer-side) connection, unless you have Big Sur (MacOS 11) on your Intel TB3 Mac. If you're doing music production or anything super content-heavy, make sure all your apps are tested and "certified" on Big Sur...
@@PeteKowalsky thanks for the advice! 🙏🏾 I've got TB3 but MacOS BigSur😊
@@PeteKowalsky I've found that on a Windows PC with TB3, I can get TB3 output out of the port furthest away from the power port. The other ports get USB-C.
You haven’t included a link to the custom drive components parts.
Both the enclosure and nvme drive.
Perhaps include a link to the video which details this too.
im waiting for the links to the video for this

I'm not sure if this will solve an issue I'm having with M1 Mac Mini. I have two displays connected all the time, but sometimes I connect my Home Theater Processor to run in conjunction with software to do testing and measuring. The Mac sees the processor as a display though, so I need to disconnect my 2nd display to make it work. It kind of sucks, bc it's this type of application where my 2nd display really comes in handy. So would this dock allow me to connect my processor without having to discconect the 2nd monitor? Thanks!
Can you export to 2 extra monitors using Thunderbolt ports with this dock ?
Hi do you know if you can use 3 external monitors via M1 MacBook Air with this doc? Thank you.
What are those speakers you're using on your setup, and are they decent? Thanks :)
Can I charge my laptop trough one of these ports?
Could not find the link for the Custom SSD. Please post it. Could not find it on Maxtech site either.
Does it heat up??
This is perfect because the hagibis, agptek, and the other brand of mac mini hub/docks apparently are having seriously bad reviews where the 2.5 inch internal sata enclosure seems to be disconnecting the ssd hard drives. Not worth the $80 price tag.
Getting this! Do you think we could expect the same performance with a Pegasus RAID?
Thinking of sending back before opening to get full refund
Have you checked out the CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 Element?
This review is nice but incomplete. What about the powering of the Mac through that hub/dock? According to their website it only provides 60w? Is that enough to maintain or recharge a MacBook Pro m1 under heavy loads?
The M1 MacBook Pro ships with a 61W charger, so 60W should be sufficient.
The answer is a simple Software solution.. it's an app called "AlDente Pro"
@@BombDaBass2000 thank you sir 🙏
Just had my MBP M1 MAX. The OWC refuses to connect Angelbird SDDs to the hub! WHY???
I bought a Kingston Nucleum type-c hub and attached to my Mac Mini, it get super hot very quickly even I didn't attach anything on it. I checked on web and found out that many people have same problem on Mac, can Max be able to investigate on this issue?
They do advertise that they're usb 4. It's right there on the product page.
Now to test the speeds of devices connected to dongles that are connected to the thunderbolt ports on the dock. To expand each of those TB3 ports to various USB, HDMI, Ethernet connections
I love your sound setup, could you tell me the model and is it any good? :) thank you
looks promising but after being a victim of USB hubs bricking my m1 I'm really wary of docks.
Can you connect two LG 4K Ultrafine displays to a mac mini using this?
I like the Anker TB4 hub better. I actually daisy chained an Anker TB3 hub to it and got even MORE ports for older devices.
This vs thunderbolt dock? They have like 6 docks on the website I don’t understand the differences
Why would Apple cut the total number of ports in half when these tests prove that it could easily have had all four? It's not like there's a lack of space inside the mini either. It's basically hollow inside. Are they holding back to sell a more expensive one in 6 months?
Hi. With the same device can I connect eGPU?
Interesting... I get 360/380 off a crucial mx500 with a 2011 MBA over thunderbolt with a hub. I hoped I'd get better on the new MBA :(
is USB 4 what you are trying to say
