I think they were all under rated. Always been a fan, JT inspired me to start playing bass all those decades ago but Simon Le Bons lyrics are the finest....he deserves much more recognition as a song writer
I remember being so proud when I could finally say the whole "Gotta take pay from the saints 'n sinners " bit without screwing it up..lol..love memories like that!
And the breakdown is OFF THE CHAIN!! And this is coming from a 40 year old black man from the east side of Detroit. I used to rock DD back in the day because they are incredible musicians. And they were carrying the torch of funk music!!!
spyderj1999 you posted 3 years ago about New Religion. I'm a native Texan 64 years. I don't feel like a gringo when I'm in the zone, channeling dancing from a fine brother, and getting backup vocals in there somehow. Got to see Simon and boys 2016 live outdoor amphitheater Austin 10th row floor and my oh my . . .best OMG. Never been a gringo, btw. Crank it up.
Lemme guess, you're either a bass player yourself or love the bass. Because Detroit have produced some of the baddest assed bass players in the world. Trace the origins of most of the badasses in L.A. or New York and they lead right back to Detroit. That entire Duran Duran Rio album was a bass clinic. John Taylor is a beast.
I didn't know it until recently when I revisited it. The first thing that struck me was the bass. Truly mind blowing. Every song is worthy of play no skip tracks here. Their best album no question.
+kittyCat Furbabies I have heard he can be quite rude and arrogant ,I love duran duran but I have to John is probably my least favourite member of the band because of that reason .le bon girl 71 xx
kittyCat Furbabies hm i havent heard that one before. how so? all ive heard people say is how nice he actually is.... ive always loved john taylor. care to explain? :)
I'm talking for free..how powerful is that. Gives me goosebumps every time. Same with 'you're about as easy as a nuclear war.' Some things you don't forget and music..music takes me places i will never forget. I was born in the 90's but this is full crank in my '86 oldsmobile cutlass ciera. Love the 80's!! Oh and fuck haters. Duran duran is an aquired taste that only true musicians and 'cool' people will understand
On this, the 33rd anniversary of the writing of this song, I want to say it is my favourite. Between that bassline and the drive of the vocals and the dreamy quality of it, I just can't find a song I love more and never get tired of hearing, live or recorded. I also have to say that as someone who has been a Duranie since 1981, I LOVE to know that younger fans are listening. So by all means, if you want to show your love and let people know you are young, ignore the haters. Welcome Duranies!
This is the most under-appreciated song from this album. Funky-but-polished (not a contradiction in terms, as it sometimes happens), this song is brilliant.
I just read that the strings used on synthesizer for Hashim-Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) were stolen from this beautiful piece of music. Anyway, this, their first LP and Seven are my favorite, then also their Nite Romantics E.P. with Fame and Kahnada. Their B-sides are all just as good as the A-sides.
@@mortygirly I still am they are all on discogs.com, brazil, japan, mexico and portugal. Japan was the biggest from 7" to 12" and with the OBI wrap around the jacket.
I've been listening to Duran Duran since 82. I used to plaster teen beat mag pics all over my bedroom walls. john Taylor and Simon le'bon are my two favs
John Taylor is a arrogant ass , ive met him countless times , same as Charlie (Simon) . Andy , Nick, Roger and Dom are lovely , John and Simon should take a leaf out of their books!
don't listen to this troll. she obviously is one of those Wacko that have to go on every thread talking shit about John. I've met him and he a totally gentleman and the sweetest guy!
its hard to say Duran was any sort of top group all-time, they are too popish, seemingly superficial and shallow... but there is no doubt Rio is melody-wise a one in a million diamond.
A few songs?? They are still selling out concerts. Depeche Mode did the same, they wrote their own songs and music. And their latest album Delta Machine was a hit. DD were good in the 80s and 90s but their recent album just didn't cut it for me.
I grew up on and love Duran Duran's early 80's stuff. They suck after that. Depeche Mode's (grew up on them too) album, Violator, is one of the best albums of all time in my opinion. But I haven't kept up with their subsequent stuff. I would like to see them live.
When saying they ate too popish remember: They wrote their own songs and music and played their music. The band formed playing clubs in the english punk scene and evolved along the way. Their videos in the 80's were ground breaking for Mtv. I would say that thats light years ahead of most popular music seen today.

Mamma mia, questa canzone mi fa venire i brividi! Favolosissima! L'inizio di "New Religion" ricorda un pochino lo spot dell'acqua minerale "Vera" dei primi anni '90!
duran duran were brilliant because they were creativley brilliant and the video medium brought them to a wider audience. its not a shock that this album is classed the 25th best written album of the last 59 years of pop music. Its a classic from start to end...new religion, the chauffeur, last chance on the stairway, hungry like the wolf, save a prayer and rio...the best duran album...every band as their peak and this is if for duran duran. thank you...
Soy fan desde el '85 pero no hace mucho me enteré que este, uno de mis fav de DD lo compuso Andy. Pesea que estoy completamente de acuerdo con él respecto al giro musical de la banda Cómo lo extraño.
Where oh where can I hear the album in its original 1982 form with long fade outs on New Religion and Hold Back the Rain? Same with Friends of Mine. My vinyls all had the long outros the CD twats edited.
Bought the first Album and didn't like the tittle track on this one, ( really, just me ) so basically missed out on a classic. Funny old world. Just remember world , mostly they came from Bermingham, ( with an e )
Sounded like a poor filler track the first listen, then amazing the second listen through. Man, Rio's songs are indeed great even though they require multiple listens
I loved this group as a teenager in the 1980 s. Songs like this are less remembered as Duran Duran hits, but they far outlast the more well know tracks. Further, I did not appreciate the musicinship involved such as Roger Taylor's skills as a bassisist.
There is a band like this these days... MUSE. After all these years I still think the album RIO is one of the most complete albums ever made and New Religion one of the best songs ever made.
@FinancingHouston same here... I agree with you and 80s is the best era... after this... sad to say, there are no more original compositions...most are revivals
I think they were all under rated. Always been a fan, JT inspired me to start playing bass all those decades ago but Simon Le Bons lyrics are the finest....he deserves much more recognition as a song writer
This song is a masterpiece.
one of my teenage favourites.

Fuckin yeah !!!!!!

spyderj1999 .that bass man!!!!
amazing playing, atomospheric and funky at the same time.
BANDA FANTASTICA
Brilliant synth funk!!!!
dat funk!
Is this rap?
This album is so good ...there isn't a track on it I don't love
Great album, and most people don't know it.
I didn't know it until recently when I revisited it. The first thing that struck me was the bass. Truly mind blowing. Every song is worthy of play no skip tracks here. Their best album no question.
Absolutely.
I can remember buying an Ac Dc album and this the same day... eclectic...
I have no words to describe John Taylor's genius. Suffice to say he has given me ears 30 yrs of pleasure
Don't meet him ever then; every time I meet him he's arrogant 😭
+kittyCat Furbabies I have heard he can be quite rude and arrogant ,I love duran duran but I have to John is probably my least favourite member of the band because of that reason .le bon girl 71 xx
Okay...I am 48...and still can keep up singing with this song...I ROCK!
Tracey I'm 47 and me too
+Annemarie Williamson Kids I tell yuh

+Tracian Gibson 44!
I'm 43 my fave Duran song
yes you do :)
i want to marry the bassline
Instead of the person playing bass ..... Good choice !
DD is know for their baselines. Maybe you can marry a few of them but that's not legal in the US.
stu wilks Maybe it is in the UK.
LOL.
John Doe 😁😀🤓🤓
Every DAMN song on this album was jammin! The singing, the drums, the bass. Man, Duran Duran wasn't playing around on Rio (1982).
The bassline sends shivers up my spine !
John Taylor definitely had 'the fonk'
one of the best bass players ever, though no list mentions it. Still truth
this is the most underrated track in music history...
Hyperbole.
+max “cirillo71” merlo
If you'd said 'One of the most underrated' i would have agreed 100 %, now you'll only get 98 % from me :-)
Pretty damn close.
They were 20 when they wrote this!!!!!!
Brilliant!
One of the coolest songs ever. Massive bass line from my man John Taylor.
I have to say that 32 years on, this has to be my fave DD track, love the superb bass and spirited chorus.
A song you can throw your neck into, lol. It's so wonderfully funky and so well put together, I close my eyes and just get lost in the groove of it!
+Katrina M I'm gonna have to say hell yeah!!!
One of my favorite Duran Duran songs.
my favorite too....along with Careless Memories
Very sexy bassline
Genius. Duran at their very best.
This should have been a massive hit! One of my faves
I agree
Still a massive hit in my house
mgparis
Undoubtedly one of the best pop albums of all times.
Best track on Rio. Rhythm
The part that starts at 4:22 owns so hard. The live version on Arena is even better IMO.
My favorite part too!
4:22.
DD are still the best, who says they are not?
They need ANDY Back
This and The Chauffeur are my two favorite DD tracks. Sick bass lines for this IMO.
Kill that bass John.
Shame he's such a arrogant ass in real life
kittyCat Furbabies hm i havent heard that one before. how so? all ive heard people say is how nice he actually is.... ive always loved john taylor. care to explain? :)
I'm talking for free, I can't stop myself, it's a new religion.
One of the coolest songs ever. Massive bass line from my man John Taylor.
I bought "Rio" on vinyl as soon as it came to my town...this was and still is my favorite song on the album
Me too
I'm talking for free..how powerful is that. Gives me goosebumps every time. Same with 'you're about as easy as a nuclear war.' Possibly the best track they ever did.
I agree. It's my all time DD favorite.
as superb today as it was in '82
Nick is one of if not the best synth players ever!! D2 forever!!
I wouldn't go that far lol. After all he was influenced by Tangerine Dream. You should give their mid-late 70's stuff a listen
I miss my Yamaha keyboards, would you believe I gave them away years ago? I play bass these days.
A fave song from my fave band growing up! Shows their true talent! Still a great jam! ;) oxo Michelle Weber
DD is such a great band...

80's THE BEST DECADE FOR MUSIC !
no one can this one again... my cover life song...awesome song!!!!!!!!!!
This has to be John's best bassline
This is the best tune they wrote the bass line is awesome
This is the most under-appreciated song from this album. Funky-but-polished (not a contradiction in terms, as it sometimes happens), this song is brilliant.
Love, love, love this song! Always have been one of my all time favorite!❤❤❤
New religion ahead of its time and excellent song
Soooooo Funky!!!!!
ive played it for ages!
this is the bomb big time
the synth line 2m 46 gave birth to Hashim-Al-Naafiysh :D
I just read that the strings used on synthesizer for Hashim-Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) were stolen from this beautiful piece of music. Anyway, this, their first LP and Seven are my favorite, then also their Nite Romantics E.P. with Fame and Kahnada. Their B-sides are all just as good as the A-sides.
I forgot about Fame. And Late Bar too! My bff and I spent a ridiculous amount of money on their import records back then.

My dad bought me the 45 of The Reflex and this song was on side B
I think come up and see me make me smile was that b side pal
i guarantee it was not- new religion was side B of the reflex
+brad neville jr WRONG! come up and see me IS the B side of the Reflex , it's the live version actually
+Brenda Garry you are correct! Brad is wrong
BRING BACK ANDY TAYLOR !!!!!!
I've been listening to Duran Duran since 82. I used to plaster teen beat mag pics all over my bedroom walls. john Taylor and Simon le'bon are my two favs
And they are the two most arrogant and rude out of the band .:(
kittyCat Furbabies they are not!
i have seen them twice live , lucky me

They were amazing until I discovered Depeche Mode in my teens and then it was Duran who??

Nothing wrong with pop music bro. It makes the world go round.
Brilliant!
+1
Critics were probably jealous cause they were both talented and good looking
It seems like I've already listenned to this song. Perhaps, it was on a Tv serie called "Everybody Hates Chris". But anyway, it's an awesome band..!

John Taylor Loved the sounds of Funk one great bands he followed was Chic, which had some of the best bass lines I have ever heard. Love this

Just bought remastered 2CD version.
I love The SoundGarden.
the best band ever
Talent oozing from their pores from day 1 .......Thanks for the upload Nathan
The beat on this song would have made a great suspense/musical cue on TJ Hooker or any crime drama movie or TV show of the 1980s for that matter.
Want to hear great bass playing you are now
Wow...
DURAN DURAN É UMA DAS MELHORES BANDAS DOS ANOS 80 E DE TODOS OS TEMPOS
I'll never understand why this wasn't one of their biggest hits....
