@@zakiii3913 Yeah I guess so, although starting salaries tend to be around £30k in London, but maybe it falls under the financial services and/or consulting headings
For O&G, Energy etc its important to consider the location too. A lot of times the work will be carried out in lower-cost areas (outside of major cities normally for H&S reasons etc) and so the salaries will go little further than they would in a city. Apart from that very good video as always.
Interesting video! Would be cool to see the averages based on London rather than national as well. As almost all investment banking jobs are going to be in London the high average salary may not be a fair comparison to the other jobs if they were also all based in London. London based consultants, software engineers and lawyers will most likely have a higher starting salary than the national average.
The comparison with law and retail management is bit misleading though; after the two-year training contract, your salary as a newly-qualified associate greatly increases, doubling if you're working for a 'magic' or 'silver' circle law firm and going well into the six figures if you're working for an elite US law firm; I don't know the statistics but I can't imagine the earning potentials of a retail manager are comparable
you're right. Retail tries to get people in with high entry salary and then you're stuck with managing a store in some village and no real career development
Corporate law in international firms in London is around £46k-51k starting salary in year one. Year two is £50k-55k. Then qualification salary (3rd year) is around £100k for the top international firms
Hey Afzal, nice video. As someone going into corporate law, maybe I can shed a bit more light on the topic of salaries. Law is a broad field, and the £40,000 number is too vague to be of any real value. It accounts for high street firms, who pay graduates pennies, to global behemoths like Kirkland & Ellis, Latham & Watkins, and possibly the Magic Circle who pay graduates £50k-60k + bonus, with a salary hike in the third year (NQ) which takes the salary to £150k + bonus which is higher than any IB would be earning in the equivalent year (although, IBs overtake corporate lawyers later on down the line).
Hey, very true but a few things are incorrect. High Street firms pay trainees significantly less than £40k, typical 'big' law firms(magic circle etc) pay £42-50k and elite us firms pay £50-55k. Newly qualified associate salaries in London can vary anywhere between £70k and £150k. However, £150k is only payed by a couple firms and even most magic circle firms pay less than £100k(Linklaters pay £83k).
You can’t compare Law salary with IB salary. For IB you only need a bachelor most of the time. Whereas for law you will be studying double the time before you can get a job. Therefore you would have to compare first year salary after law school with fourth year salary in IB which is a huge difference.
@@Charlie0311 In addition you are talking about London salaries but when you go national is pretty much around form 25 to 30 something k so it's not that dramatic if you want be anywhere else than London.
The high paying retail management roles are interesting, but I have heard from people on them (particularly the much talked about Aldi scheme) that they are absolutely brutal in terms of workload and demand.
Very hard to compare salaries though. I work in consulting but a lot my clients are public sector, it is well paid but not £41k average. I think nearly all graduate roles have a starting salary of around £25-30k in London, be it policy, consulting, general finance, engineering, management. Techy roles are £35k. Retail mgmt is an interesting high earner I agree. Laws very broad, and most lawyers out of uni start off as paralegals or trainees and get paid nothing for the first few years so isn't fair to compare their salary after 3 years experience to a graduate role that you can do straight out of uni. You selected niche chem eng roles as its own entry, but not innovation consulting, or a niche programming role which both have higher starting salaries than other jobs in the wider sector

In Belgium we have a program called Business Engineering, we get a total of 4-5 courses (depending on electives) in science, like electricity, energy, chemistry, mechanics, biochem (optional), and thermodynamics. Next to these courses we get a lot of quantitative courses (e.g. econometrics) and that is all in our Bachelor's program, would this program allow me to get into the energy and/or oil industry, in a financial or management position?
@@edwardblack9263 Yeah I was thinking of majoring in accounting and minoring in business finance in my master's programme (in Belgium a master's is a necessity) so that I would have a very broad but still advanced knowledge to get into the business. (the master is a 2-year programme and I also think of either taking the specialisation of supply chain management or sustainability engineering.)
The data here is pretty inaccurate, it would have been better to give a range of salaries. I'm disappointed at the quality of the research done, especially for a sponsored video. This 9 minute video could have been a 3 minute article read.
As always, thanks for the great vid, and a question from someone going to uni next year, would you say it is too soon to start looking around and planning cover letters for banks in prep for next years spring weeks?

Hi Afzal, love your videos congratulations and thank you ! I am at a crossroads in my career and could really use some guidance, do you think it would be possible for us to have a chat sometime ? I'm sure someone with your experience and vision could help me out a lot ! Do you do 1 on 1 ? coaching etc... ? I would compensate your for your time of course, you should set up a Patreon ! Cheers , Vincent
These are graduate salaries i.e. salaries for 22 year olds. I'd say 50k ain't half bad for a pimple faced kid out of uni. Also, keep in mind that many of these salaries explode within a few years e.g. corporate lawyers will start at £40-60k, but after NQ (which takes 2 years training), salaries can easily reach £100-200k (depending on bonus and exchange rate).
@@kolaignad6495 yeah I know, they are still lower than in Germany. €40k is considered low in Consulting, Finance etc, many wouldn't take that. At the Big 4, you start with €50k, in IB and MBB it's €70k upwards, for trainee positions in corporations it's €45-55k. Of course these are above average positions, but you had these in the video as well. €45k is the median entry job for graduates, that includes awfully paid jobs like in media or culture. From what I've heard, the UK has a problem of too many international applicants, thus companies being able to underpay and still get the best people. In Germany, where many companies still have a language barrier for internationals, that's not the case so much.
Yeah mate enjoy your birth-right and language access to the DACH labour market. Pretty damn good compared to most of the world (speaking from Southern Europe here). Are major-city German living costs on par with London costs? Frankfurt/munchen/Berlin - rent about 800-1000 for a good place close to the office?
@@edwardblack9263 Munich rent is awful, I don't think quite London level yet but we're getting there. Berlin not so much, lots of start-ups and young people/artists there. Frankfurt is decent for a big city, but housing prices are going up everywhere in areas near large cities

Good programme. If you also take accounting/finance courses my opinion is definitely yes

As a German, these sound really low. Surely they pay more in London with the living costs, no?
Don't think this is London specific more uk in general, so they average down
