They say cats are often primarily hunting by sound, and can hear quite high frequencies.
If rats and mice are this noisy in ultrasonic frequencies, that would certainly make sense...

Those squeaks are how wolves, foxes, and dogs know where to pounce on the snow to get the rat beneath it. I watched a border collie hunting mice in the snow. She would leap up and come down with her front paws on the mouse. I of course, was completely oblivious to what she was after, until she caught one.

Oh my god, it would be revolutionary to create "hearing aids" that let you talk with rodents!! I would LOVE to understand what my little buddy is saying. And can you imagine the devlopment of the rat calls ro different animals? Cats, Dogs, Parrots, and so much more.
And it would possibly helpful to get scientists to feel empathy for animals used as harmful test subjects. We as humans tend to disregard other beings if they don't speak our language, or if they can't communicate in the way we do. Imagine scientists actually holding back, because they can understand some of the fear that goes through those little beans. And finding a BETTER way to test products for humans.
There's so much potential for this project. I really hope that it continues in motion.

It cared for the kittens until its death but by that point they’d gotten another rat or two that also acted as a kitten nurse maid. Such a cool story.

@Knight Might be, that's a pretty interesting phenomena, but they're also very social across species lines. They are some of the few animals we know have empathy cross-species (we've measured their mirror neuron activity), and most rats tend to prefer coexisting with other creatures rather than active competition - especially domesticated ones, for obvious reasons. It's similar to other domesticated animals, like the cats themselves, just a bit more pronounced in rodents.

      Quick PSA:
The rats in this video aren't TAME they are DOMESTICATED. There is a potentially dangerous difference between the two! Never do any of this stuff with a tamed rat no matter how friendly they've been raised to be. They will still have all of their wild instincts from birth and choose to be nice to people despite said instincts. A tamed rat will definitely show more anxiety than a domestic one. For example, a tamed rat will probably need much more personal space and can act much more unpredictably when touched. A lot of bad situations can occur if a person holds a tamed animal up to the same standards as a domestic one. The rats in this video are not born with a fear of humans or the wild instincts that lead to safety problems caused by the tamed counterpart. In short, tamed rats are taught and domesticated ones are born with an attachment to people.

‘The tricky bit is not the recording, it’s the analysis’. This is the truest note in this video. Bioacousticians have been field recording animals since the 1930’s (see gun lab recordings in Cornell’s online Macaulay library). There is already a large body of research on wild animals. Primarily the bulk is of birds, bats, primates, insects, fish, cetaceans, and frogs but a diverse minority of other species and animal communities (eg. Coral reefs) have been studied too. The most critical comment I have for this video is that interpreting animal communication is a very old and established field of ecology that pre-dates recording technology, not some new surprising thing that is all about lab rats. There are also many academic, non-profit and commercial groups working on gathering data for machine learning models of animal sound. Some of the software for species-recognition analysis is already commercially or publicly available. The unique part of this research is the want to use it on captive animals. This has interesting implications for many captive, urban, or domestic animals in a variety of anthropogenically induced settings.

ok i have had rats for a long time and i highly recommend you get one.. if you work at home or have alot of free time you can get just one rat if you like.. they become friendlier to humans and get more clingy.. but if you work long hours and dont spend much time at home then get 2 or even 3 rats.... and there pretty low maintenance.. if you run out of rat food they can eat just about anything you have in the house.. my rat loves carrots and sun flower seeds so she eats a lot of that sometimes... and i cant stress this enough SPEND HUGE AMOUNTS OF TIME WITH THEM, i spend 4 to 5 hours a day with my rat since she does not have another rat to live with and i dont want her to be alone.. she is a very happy rat :)

This was fascinating! Thank you for sharing! I've kept pet domestic rats for years, and while I'm very comfortable with them & their care, I am still learning new things all the time. For anyone thinking of having a rat of your own, just know that rats are not so called "beginner" pets, they have needs just like any cat or dog! And just like all animals, they are not disposable, you should be willing to commit for the entirety of their lives! Their care can be time-consuming & costly (enclosures, bedding, food, medicine, etc.). That being said, they are one of the most adorable, precious, amazing animals I've been had the privilege of caring for! For as small as they are & relatively short their lifespans, so many of them have touched my heart forever! ♡

Rats and a some other rodents are actually really really ticklish, especially their backs. As seen on the video, the scratching/rubbing motion of the researcher's hands is focused on around their spine, hence why I believe they refer to it as tickling.

Animals that humanity eat to fuel their bodies (vegetarians/vegans aside) deserve respect and a good life on a loving farm, beforehand. Animals that have been used for medical purposes, deserve a heroes last days. No, the animals used in experimentation do not consent. It is truly enlightening to see studies like this happening. There's a movement into understanding and comprehending the intelligence of the world that has always been around us, and it's inspiring to find that most creatures are much more vastly intelligent than previously thought. It gives you a sense of respect for the natural world, as more of an equal to us. Which, sadly is something I think was lost, and had to be re-learned, due to our self separation from that world we built over.

Fantastic video! Animal communication is one of my favorite topics, and it was great to see the state of the art in rat-call analysis. 3:58 - One article I read on this said that if a rodent squeak is low-frequency enough to hear with your human ears, that's the equivalent of a _growl_ by a bigger animal. And holy cow, that was some adorable rat footage (especially 0:16 😋). If I hadn't already decided awhile back to only live-catch intruding rodents rather than using killing traps, this video probably would've been the turning point.
Anyhow, thanks for covering this so well, and I look forward to checking out more of your videos. If this one was any indicator, I suspect I'll be subscribing.

I'm with you, Mr. Ferret. Not long ago I was going through videos on a DIY channel that's otherwise very good, and was disgusted to come across their video on how to make your own rodent-drowning bucket trap. No mention given to the possibility of live-trapping; just boasts of how efficiently you can kill rodent after rodent with their trap (including footage of rats falling into buckets already filled with their dead brethren, bobbing up and down).

I've been raising rats for about 14 years now and to learn more about what I can't hear would be great. I hear the normal play squeaks, fighting squeaks if one is being testy, teeth chatter and chatter that causes boggling. Please don't get just one rat, they need cage mates! And please, please do your research before getting any. Their care is specific and if you do it wrong it can cause health issues.
