So many words to explain such a simple problem.

You can save yourself a little post hole digging work if you stop the auger at various points while digging, raise the boom then spin the auger back up to unload it. This keeps your hole cleared out and neatly piles the waste to the outside of the hole. Also, one other note, the top of the auger will start to tilt towards the tractor as the hole gets deeper because the radius point is controlled by the lift arms and center link base. This is another good reason besides not standing next to an auger and driveshaft to be on the tractor while digging. You can move the tractor forward or backwards to keep your auger vertical.

Stay on the tractor - let it eat and then pull it up and out to throw off spoils, put back in hole and repeat until at desired depth. I paint flight at desired depth so you know when you good.

May I suggest shutting the engine off while your fingers are fiddling with the shaft bolts? If the PTO engages and starts turning the auger, you will lose your fingers.

I was watching Everything Attachment's video on their post hole augers and you might want to view it as he talks about some safety practices that might save you from becoming an amputee.

Amputee implys a careful surgical removal, PTO equipment snatches limbs off and proceeds to beat you with your own appendages.

You can add water in the hole to help the auger dig.

The way your lackadaisical about walking right up to that pto shaft while its running makes me think how lucky you are. People have lost legs and limbs making those mistakes.

Thanks a lot for the info about the fishtail tip. My Country Line auger is getting stuck each single time I hit hard clay and I believe the fishtail tip will help to prevent that.

Cutting off the plates with the mounting holes, welding on a new plates and drilling new holes. That's less than $10 in material and probably less than $80 in labor at professional shop. And if you can weld it yourself.... It's definitely worth fixing the old one.

Op, you need a decent crackerbox welder. Every farm ought to have one. Build thay thing up with hardfacing rods and use it. It would take 30 minutes. We appreciate the video and the information.

I saw this video and I had to watch. This is a very needed video! One thing I've seen people doing is sharpening the cutter edges. Sharpening isn't the problem, but they round the 90-degree edge. That makes it hard for the auger to cut especially in clay. W/o downforce, it really makes it difficult to dig holes. Hope that helps someone.

    • @wingwhacker7500
      @wingwhacker7500 Рік тому +1

Another trick is adding water to the hole especially with a sandy loam. It helps give mass to the soil and allows the auger fliting to function.

I did something similar I just welded more steel on and went back to work. If I get another auger I want to look into a front mount hydraulic wobble auger. It pushed the dort to form the hole so the soil is even more compact when you drop the post in.

In Rocky ground of Ozarks, I have had best luck with 12-inch auger on a rented Bobcat (diesel). I have doubts about any auger on 3-point hitch (compact tractor) drilling holes in the Ozarks. Comments?

You made me nervous walking around that spinning PTO shaft. For some perspective, look up "PTO injuries". Just don't do it at lunch.
Our auger has a plastic cover over the shaft and I STILL don't go near the thing. Seeing a human body "pop" while it wraps around one of those will scare the crap out of you.
Good info, btw. Love the channel.

You can buy that bottom where the teeth bolt on and weld a new one on. Save that old auger. Dont you just love those safety shield? One of the most unsafe things to do is to be off the tractor while running a post hole digger. One piece of clothing or anything gets wrapped your done.

Kubota dealer robbed ya! I bought a different diameter auger bit at Atwoods for way cheaper. You can use the same gearbox and just change the size hole bit if you want.

You have a nice piece of land with a new building on it and you think a $180 auger bit is expensive? Harbor Freight tools are cheap, go get a good 1/2 inch drive socket set, a box wrench set, and a few ball peen hammers. With that sawmill those will be useful and get a 3/4 socket set while you at it. Should cost about $250 for all that.

I think your being a little dramatic. Costly mistakes with farming equipment are in the thousands. You can buy a new auger like the one your showing here in Oregon for around $150.00…. I just bought three new ones yesterday for $450.00…..Just wait until your 4701 has a trans or engine problem, that will be costly. LMFAO
