I'd like to add a few details:
    1. Executives fled from the building 17 minutes before the collapse, after the engineers warned "collapse was imminent"
    2. That day the president of Sampoong said in the national TV interview, "I know that some people got hurt, but whats most important is that I lost a lot of asset!"
    3. The daughter in law of the Sampoong president was also in the building at the time of the accident, but he left her behind before fleeing as well. She luckily survived and was rescued 14 hours later.

Besides the second law of thermodynamics, everything is failing or breaking apart. The system is breaking down gradually. People are using cheaper building materials others are exploiting existing materials. More collapses more deaths more negligence is sadly bound to happen because of Crooks corruption both in commercial and political sectors. The main reason is greed. Unless people learn to become honest hard workers who play by the rules, world issues such as these continue to happen.

Yeah you can't mess with concrete buildings. Ceilings without steel girders are extremely vulnerable to runaway collapse.
"A girder" can fail, but everything is fine in a steel-frame structure due to redundancy.
Concrete is dead weight held up by rebar toothpicks inside columns that can crack.
Single-point failure = structural failure in this type of architecture.
Twin Towers, Sampoon Mall, viaducts and freeways in earthquakes, and now, Florida condo. There's many more examples.
Concrete is cheaper, but less stable.
      Maintenance and inspection is critical.
Conspiracy theorists go nuts when they see concrete go down, because it looks like demolition. Well, that's how single-point failure = collapse works.
It's not a conspiracy - it's concrete damaged, or not maintained.

Back in 1989 I watched them build a small hotel. Well midway thru the construction they decided to add two more floors. They didn't order any more concrete and steel to add these floors, they just added more sand to the concrete. I guess the only saving grace was the upper floors being lighter, haha.... with all the construction and growth since then I bet the hotel was torn down and something larger put in it's place.

Do you remember the nightclub fire in Daegu ROK in 1983? I was on temporary duty at Daegu AB from a base in Georgia, USA and had been in the club prior to the power outage and it was shoulder to shoulder and when the power went out and they started to put lit candles on all the tables, just long candles with no bases not small nightclub candles in glass containers like most people think about, I told the girl I was with, let's get the heck out of here we barely got down the stairs and within minutes the place was burning down. We weren't out the door more than 3-5 min and the fire started. I didm't know the extent of what happened until i went back to work on the following workday and when I did I just fell straight down onto the floor and was in a daze, it just took the wind right out of my sails. In the five years that I lived in Korea from 84-89 I never let myself stay or enter a place when I got that feeling in the pit of my stomach.

There's a K-drama called Just Between Lovers that is about two people who were victims of the collapse of a mall, called the S Mall, that killed and injured many people years before, and how they deal with the trauma of what happened. It's a pretty cute drama. My explanation doesn't really do it justice, but I don't really know how to describe it. Lol. I believe it's on Hulu.
    P.S.
I'm not saying that the drama is based on these events but seeing as it is about two people who fall in love and who were both victims of a building called the S Mall collapsed while the building that collapsed in real life is the Sampoong Mall, one could assume that the inspiration was the real S Mall, aka theSampoong Mall, collapse.

I was climbing out of the command heliport in Yongsan when this happened and I actually witnessed it from the air. It didn't make sense what I had seen until after I landed and heard it on the news.
There were entire city blocks of tall buildings that had to be torn down because the builders cheated and used beach sand that was full of salt instead of the quarry sand specified, and it ate away the rebar in the support structure. Those buildings would have collapsed also. There was overall corruption in the construction business and all of the city government was involved.

How did I live in Korea for 4 years, learn the language, and still never hear about this? I thought SEWOL ferry disaster was the biggest corporate caused tragedy in Korea's history. I knew there was major corruption there, but I didn't realise this had happened in Seoul!

The ending where the government decided to put apartments instead of a memorial is so disrespectful. They died because someone pushed profit over ppl & in the end the gov decided to push profit over ppl. 😠

This is disaster & it’s eerily similar to the disastrous building collapse in Florida about a week ago. I wonder how many more of these buildings are on the verge of collapse worldwide? Old bridges, viaducts and tunnels are in desperate need of repairs or replacement too!

I believe apartments were built over the site of the department store. Residents sometimes claim they hear the voices of trapped people. Or a woman is seen walking around carrying a Sampoong Dept Store bag.

I hope other people learned from this disaster to not cut corners.
It makes me wonder where else in the world such things have been done, and what disasters are still waiting to happen.

Yeah, it's worrisome to think of the corner cutting in other places where large buildings are over-stressed and under built for sure!

May I introduce you to History's Modern Marvels: Engineering Disasters...?
The largest deadliest structural collapse in US was the Hyatt walkway that killed 114.
That those people are still allowed to work ANYWHERE is unnerving.
