    Probably not 8 months, but I could see shutter angle taking some time to develop, particularly if it's designed so it's modular enough to be added across the different cameras/lines. That said, porting Breathing Compensation, or true 24p over to the a7S III shouldn't take 3+ years.... To me, the question is if they keep up with updates on the a7 IV, a7R V, etc. over time - e.g. all of the modern Alpha bodies should get LUT support.

    Dev here 👋, how long it takes depends on the features, team size, quality assurance and hardware support. But Sony is massive so my guess is they prioritise future releases over existing releases.

    Being able to assign Clear Image Zoom to an Assignable Button on the FX6 would be useful!

    Sony was previously known as a company that never continuously updated its cameras with firmware. I think they have no choice since the competition has those options already. These options and open gate should have already been there.

    They did this to their x900H tvs too. They said they would bring VRR and other features. And like 2 years later it was half assed. So i got a TV expecting these full features but that wasnt the case.

    Am a software developer. Am on day 3 on writing a loading-spinner in javascript lol. I might use a week. More advanced stuff like things that are done in realtime might take much longer to develop and test. While you change settings, other parts are supposed to work at the same time, and it isn't good if something that was supposed to take 1/50 of a second suddenly take 1/60 of a second for instance, when you click that button. Maybe they can take movie and photo at many different settings, like f-stop, iso etc and have a computer go through the data and see that it is correct. There should be a test-regime in place. But there are also third party product like lenses that interact with the camera in realtime, so for certain functions, it could be quite demanding to get everything right.

    As a new fx3 owner it is frustrating as hell to be waiting for these basic features like this, and its good to see those thoughts being voiced by others. Sonys so transparent with their weird ass choices and it sucks.

    • @eike.zender
      @eike.zender 5 місяців тому +2

      But you bought it, knowing it hasn't those features. And now - shortly after you bought your camera - they provide you with new features. For me this sounds fair ...

    • @Fireflysinthegrass
      @Fireflysinthegrass 5 місяців тому +1

      @eike.zender I appreciate them for providing the features at all and would have bought the camera regardless. Doesnt change the fact that a "cine" camera should have had shutter angle and false color from the beginning. It's amazing even without them and well worth its cost, but it is a strange and see through exclusion which I'm glad they are fixing.

    • @Fireflysinthegrass
      @Fireflysinthegrass 5 місяців тому +1

      @eike.zender like I said it's a great camera either way and has immense value even without them. And yeah it is fair and good for it to be upgraded now. But that doesn't make it not silly or transparent that it could have had these features from the start and only now is receiving them when they are very important to what make sa "cine" cam "cine"

    • @Fireflysinthegrass
      @Fireflysinthegrass 4 місяці тому

      @SuperPhunThyme100 yes because even without those features I don't see any other camera which meets my needs half as well for that price. But it doesn't change the fact that they are important cine features and it is especially silly given their inclusion down the line that they were not present from the beginning. Lacking them is just a minor annoyance but very odd for a camera marketed and sold as specifically a cinema cam

    This is random, but I like the angle you used for this video regarding your recording space, lol. I am happy we are FINALLY getting shutter angel for the FX3. I was NEVER planning on letting it go for its shortcomings but its nice to know that extra money I put into it finally paid off.

    What’s lame is the FX3 and A7S3 are the same camera. At least were when the FX3 launched. It has been given so many updates and has left the A7S3 in the dust. As a person that owns 2 A7S3 cameras this pisses me off that I spent over $7000 on this cameras and have been given very little support on firmware updates. My Canon R5 is my go to now and am hoping the R5ii will crush with dynamic range. If bye bye Sony!!

    0:50 I doubt very much that, when they announce a software update, that they haven't already coded it and implemented it in cameras to test it. I bet that is pure marketing, they could release it tomorrow if they wanted.

  • @ETFootprints

    If there's only a team that handles firmware update, it's reasonable timeline considering Sony has rolled out firmware after firmware. Not the mention all firmware for their new cameras. I don't really care about shutter angle, I just use math. What I want is open gate for their cine line.

  • @matthartman7062
    @matthartman7062 Місяць тому

    Software developer here. Developing new firmware isn’t an easy task, and I’m impressed Sony can get this firmware out within 8 months. Firmware, unlike general software, cannot be buggy because it can damage the hardware. In other words, Sony isn’t making their customers beta test with their expensive hardware.

  • @nbr_1

    MacOS Sonoma has been out for three months and they still haven't updated the Sony Imaging Edge software to be compatible. So in the meantime it can't be used as a camera for the Mac. 👎

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  5 місяців тому +1

      Yikes. Maybe that's why it's taking 8 months for these updates, Sony doesn't have enough software developers...

    Your table doesn't take into account shooting frame rates in different Hz locations . Speed is much easier to work with in this regard than working out 172.8 and 144 degrees in your head . Auto 180 degrees is often not what you want and will end up with a whole load of newbies, thinking they will get "cinematic " footage , but will end up with a ton of flicker all over their rushes . Whats needed in the fx3 is clear scan . There are so many people who think shutter angle will make their footage look different from speed , it wont it will be exactly the same . Albeit ruined by flicker if they set 180 instead of 172.8 or 144, instead of just having to remember 1/50th and 1/60th .

    • @PhillipRPeck
      @PhillipRPeck  5 місяців тому

      Well my point was that people shouldn't be so rigid in thinking their footage has to be 180 all the time. I mentioned "reasons" that one might want to deviate from 180, and flickering lights is definitely one of those reasons. Syncro scan absolutely would be a useful feature just like the Panasonic cameras have

      @@PhillipRPeck True sir . I just wonder why everyone and his dog has been going on about shutter angle as this vital missing component for a "cine camera " , and unfortunately a lot of newbies actually think their footage will look different and magically be "cinematic ". But hardly anyone mentions lack of clear scan , that can totally ruin a whole location .

    No, absolutely not. Not 8 months... As a software engineer, I'm fairly certain a company as reputable as Sony would not publish a press release without consulting the developers. That likely means the developers already have a proof-of-concept. 8 months? That's a lot of sandbagging.

  • @focuspulling
    @focuspulling 4 місяці тому

    You're perceptive but (understandably) diplomatic about Sony's behavior: it's cynical and entirely motivated by their accounting department/executive suits, product tiering as usual, fantasizing that it increases their margins (even though it doesn't in liberalized modern capitalism where those Mad Men games just don't work anymore).
    And yet these "upgrades" are pretty trivial: shutter angle is a pretty easy calculation to make in less than one second always (e.g., 180 degrees is doubling the denominator), and focus breathing is a Philip Bloom fetish that ignores the legacy of INTENTIONAL focus breathing in formal cinematography. Then: what skilled cinematographer ever shoots an entire project with one lens and focal length? Possible but rare - thus the fantasy of using an anamorphic lens is usually naive.

  • @Coatsey007
    @Coatsey007 5 місяців тому

    where I think Sony are going to come unstuck is in their software, they truly are atrocious. Be it their apps, the phone to camera connectivity, firmware and user interface and camera functionality they are mediocre at best. Although the likes ofInsta or DJI don’t have the sensor tech that Sony does, they can do an Apple or Google and use computing and AI software to disrupt the market.
    Another missing is more and more filming is done run and gun or solo so the FX line needs either a EVF or they need to ensure the A1 and a7Siii is FX like. I have the A1, a7Siii and they often get embarrassed by my ZV-E1. Just my humble opinion.

  • @kevinbooth6865

    Haha, he sucks at math. Sony didn't give shutter angle becuase of the math, which they are good at. No dude they charged too little for A7s3, not the other way around, again the math thing. Be happy they even put a 35mm full frame sensor in the cam, period. Sure it cost a lot of money, but can be earned again and again.
