Continuing my Autumn 2018 cruise down the Grand Union canal, I head from near Slapton lock to Marsworth, going through about nine locks and one swing bridge in the process. A lovely - but long (ish) day.

The hills you were looking at are known as Dunstable downs, and include Ivinghoe beacon, and is home to whipsnade zoo. Keep up the good work - love the vlogs

The hill is Ivinghoe Beacon. I used to live the other side of it, in a little place called Shefford. Further south, you might come across the Dunstable Downs, or the Chiltern Hills.

Hello from Oz David, I came across your videos by accident & you've now got me hooked.
I'm now working my way through your entire collection, I'm a 70yr old & it reminds me of my childhood days fishing on the Avon/Kennett canal just outside Bath, which in its self was an epic trip on buses & trains from where I lived just outside Bristol.
Your comments on the fishers on the canals are interesting as I don't remember much traffic on the canals back then but as a young boy the boats probably wouldn't have bothered me anyway.
Love your work mate, very professional & entertaining.

i'm guessing swing bridges are operated from the opposite side because they would have interfered with the horse and ropes, if on the tow path side.
By the way as a Perth West Australian resident, I find it amazing that the canals and lock cottages are as old if not older than the european settlement of the Swan River.

We often spent so much time away from shops that we ran out of fresh fruit and veggies. Since we enjoyed the taste and simplicity of 'Grilled Cheese and Tomato' sandwiches, but quickly ran out of tomatoes that weren't yet mush, we devised a mix of tomato puree and tomato paste that could be applied with a squeeze bottle without tasting of sugary catsup. The 'tang' level can be fiddled with by adding a touch of lemon juice. It quickly became our staple condiment, mostly because HP and Marmite wasn't sold here...

David: We had years whereto levels in the Great Lakes was down by a number of feet. It was a scary time I can tell you. The Great Lakes are larger than some of the world Seas. Only Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are lakes I have not lived by or worked upon. When your Canals get low it is serious as your water sources are far less than ours. Stay Safe Cheers

'Iets Groter' is indeed a bit bigger- she is our narrowboat, and at 40ft she is a bit bigger than our last boat called Kleintje which translates as 'Little One', an appropriate name 'cos she was just 30ft. All the boats at the boat club shown (Dunstable & District Boat Club) are limited to 40ft maximum. If ever we get a larger boat we may call it 'Groter Nog!' (Bigger still!)

David, we appreciate your Vlog for its high level of (professional) production, including the explanations of canal operations from both a boater's and the Canal Trust's perspective. We watch through Apple TV on our big screen TV. You video looks great.
As a traveler, thanks for including the starting and ending coordinates of your journey. I was able to plot it on Google maps, who drew your route for me based on the footpath. I just selected the walking mode. It's quite fun to follow you on the Google aerial photos. It helps us learn the geography of England. We can see where you are in that particular Vlog and the environment around the canal. Knowing the locations helps us shift it from short term to long term memory.
Finally, we chuckle at your puns, dry wit, and wide range of interests. None of the narrow boat Vlogs have come close to yours interns of enjoyment. Thanks. Richard and Judy, Tampa, Florida, USA

Thank you for the quick reply. I have been watching more of your videos and everyone is very interesting. P.S. I watch the ads for you. Your humour along with excellent narration plus camera work is top notch! Just discovering the large amount of videos you have which is great and this morning found one where you did a tour of your home. Very nice indeed! FYI. My wife and I were visiting my cousin in 2016 whom is English and lives in Wales. She suggested we go on a day trip canal boat tour and crossed the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. I found a video where you were crossing it with two lovely ladies. Wonderful to see this as I can truly identify since being there myself. That day was amongst the highlights of our visit with her and her husband. The canal system in the UK is certainly a national gem. All he best to you and wish you many enjoyable years with your travels throughout these amazing, tranquil canal systems. Regards, David...

Just remember we all enjoy it when you invite us to enjoy a cup of tea and biscuit as you journey one or sit down for your Blog. While it may sound corny it is just you being inviting and wanting the viewers to enjoy their visit. Cheers

Yes, it's the Chilterns. The tallest hill where you were is Ivinghoe Beacon - site of one of a chain of signal fires up and down the country to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada. (Distant memories of a primary school trip there back, back, back in the day.)

The sign at 5:20 says Ivinghoe. This surely means one of those hills at 5:44 must be the Ivinghoe Beacon, one of the highest peaks in the Chilterns. I have been planning to climb it for some time, as it suppossedly offers spectacular views. Can't wait to find out whether it will be possible make out the canal from the top. I never knew it runs so close to it.

I'm sure you've already had the answer - many times! - but yes, that's the Chilterns on the left, and, since you've just passed Ivinghoe Lock, the top of the hill must be Ivinghoe Beacon. You're close to Whipsnade Zoo, with the carving of the lion in the chalk.... but I shouldn't be surprised if you actually mention that later in the video!

Yes- a vlog about the locks and exactly how they are opened and closed with all the particular nomenclature would be wonderful. Just like you go into detail about (say) solar panels., do that with a lock. Close-up shots of what you are turning and how that lets water in or out. And how you get off and on your narrow boat. Basically so I would feel like I would know with confidence how to work a lock, were I there rather than doing exercises for a slipped disc here in America in a small southern town. These vlogs are quite therapeutic. Thank you.

It is never a struggle to watch your vlog's.
This video is 13:16 It went by so fast my better half was asking why you were making your videos so short.
It was 13 minutes, 16 seconds I replied. *NO WAY* was the response.
Thank you again for allowing us to join you on your travels.
#148 ? We loved everyone of them.

I don't think your viewers really appreciate the amount of time, skill, thought, effort and smarts required to produce a 20+ minute vlog.
So here is a *BRAVO ZULU* from our family.
Your weather reports always remind me of my great- great grandmother. (WWl war bride)
To this very day, her words always come back to me.
*IF THERE IS ENOUGH BLUE IN THE SKY TO MAKE A PAIR OF SAILORS PANTS, IT WILL BE A SUNNY DAY*
She never did tell me how big this sailor's pants were. 😉

We were probably 2 days ahead of you going down to London and the Thames at brentford. Decided to get it all over with and carried on to Tring summit..and yes those hills were the chilterns. Lovely reminder of a great trip

Hi David, In answer to your question regarding the hills then I would guess you were looking at the Chilterns around Wendover. I used to work around that area an the canal you were on had some nice pubs next to some of the bridges (The White Horse and Anglers Retreat come to mind). I went that way a year or so ago and one at least was boarded up which seemed a shame.

Hello from Tennessee.....enjoy your vids a lot. We dont have any canal systems here. Very interesting stuff. Would love to see it someday. Thanks

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a 234-mile canal system with 10 locks. There are other canals around the USA, such as 500+ miles of canals in NY State.

Well worth your time. I'm from BC where it's all mountains and fast rivers. The wife and I have done 3 canal trips in hired narrow boats. 1 on the Thames 1 on the South Oxford and 1 that went onto the Coventry canal. You can't screw up too badly as you are only traveling at 3mph. Highly recommend it. You could also do it on a hotel narrow boat.
